680 Dolphins Spotted Off Gujarat Coast In Latest Census
National Dolphin Day is celebrated across India on April 14, a day dedicated to raising awareness about the ecological importance of dolphins, their conservation, and the protection of their natural habitats.
This year, the spotlight is on the western coast of the country, where Gujarat - home to India's longest coastline - has emerged as a significant hub for dolphin conservation.
With its 1,600 km-long coastline, Gujarat has a rich marine biodiversity. In the latest Dolphin Census conducted by the Gujarat Forest Department, approximately 680 dolphins were recorded across a 4,087 sq. km marine stretch - a promising outcome of sustained conservation efforts, as per government data shared today.
The coastal expanse from Kutch to Bhavnagar has been identified as a thriving habitat for dolphins.
The Marine National Park and Marine Sanctuary located in the southern part of the Gulf of Kutch, between Okha and Navlakhi, recorded the highest dolphin population: 498 dolphins in 1,384 sq. km.
The northern Gulf of Kutch saw 168 dolphins in 1,821 sq. km, while 10 were spotted in Bhavnagar and 4 in Morbi.
Experts highlight that dolphins are top predators in the marine food chain and play a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance. Their presence is often an indicator of a healthy ocean ecosystem.
Conservationists also credit coastal fishing communities, particularly from Kutch to Bhavnagar, for their growing awareness and cooperation in dolphin protection.
Among the species sighted along Gujarat's coast, the Indian Ocean Humpback Dolphin is the most prominent.
Recognised by its distinctive hump and elongated dorsal fin, this dolphin species is known for its acrobatic displays and friendly nature.
Found in shallow waters near estuaries, these dolphins feed primarily on fish, crabs, and shrimp.
India officially declared the dolphin as its National Aquatic Animal in October 2009, with the Ganga Dolphin symbolising the purity of the Ganges River.
Known for their intelligence and playfulness, dolphins continue to capture the imagination of tourists and researchers alike.

Several Cops Injured During Anti-Waqf Protest Rally In Tripura
Several policemen sustained injuries during a clash between the security personnel and the agitators who held a protest rally against the recently enacted Waqf (Amendment) Act in northern Tripura's Kailashahar under Unakoti district on Saturday afternoon.
The protest, organized by the Kailashahar Joint Action Committee, began from Tilabazar and proceeded towards Kubjhar area as they did not get police permission and decided to organise it outside the municipal area.
However, upon reaching Kubjhar, the situation escalated allegedly after a shoe was thrown towards the rally, which then took an ugly turn and a clash with police personnel followed. Bricks, stones, and glass bottles were thrown at cops.
This left Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Jayanta Karmakar, Police Inspector Jatindra Das, and several other officers injured.
The situation turned chaotic, forcing the police to resort to a mild lathi charge to disperse the crowd. Protesters then fled the scene.
Police forces, including Tripura State Rifles (TSR) personnel and central paramilitary units, deployed in large numbers at the site included Kailashahar Police Station officer-in-charge Sukanta Sen Chowdhury, Irani Police Station OC Arundaya Das, and DSP Utpalendu Debnath.
Following the violence, the injured security personnel were rushed to a local hospital for treatment.
In the aftermath, Unakoti District Superintendent of Police Sudhambika R and Northern Range DIG Rati Ranjan Debnath visited the area to assess the situation.
While the DIG later confirmed that the situation was under control, but some argument was seen between SP Sudhambika R and opposition Congress leader Md Badruzzaman who led the protest.
While DIG Rati Ranjan Debnath assured that peace had been restored in the area, protest leader Md Badruzzaman claimed that many protesters were injured due to police action and blamed the authorities for provoking the violence.
The incident has triggered fear and unrest across the Kailashahar subdivision, with police maintaining heightened vigil to prevent further disturbances.
President Droupadi Murmu gave her assent to the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, on April 5, as announced by the Law Ministry in a notification on the same day.
The Bill was recently passed by parliament after intense and lengthy debates in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.
The law seeks to improve governance by enhancing transparency in property management, streamlining coordination between Waqf boards and local authorities and protecting stakeholders' rights.

Trump's NASA Chief Pick Says Will 'Prioritise' Mars Mission
NASA will prioritize sending astronauts to Mars, President Donald Trump's pick to lead the US space agency said Wednesday, shifting focus beyond a long-planned return to the Moon -- but insisting both were achievable.
Though NASA's "Artemis" Moon mission was announced in Trump's first term, he has since openly mused about heading straight to Mars, prompting concerns that China or others could fill the gap on the lunar surface.
The notion has gained traction as Elon Musk -- the world's richest person and SpaceX chief who has long eyed a human mission to Mars -- became a key Trump ally and advisor.
"We will prioritize sending American astronauts to Mars," businessman Jared Isaacman told the Senate committee overseeing his appointment.
"And along the way, we will inevitably have the capabilities to return to the Moon and determine the scientific, economic and national security benefits for maintaining a presence on the lunar surface," he said.
Musk founded his successful space company with the idea of making humanity a multiplanetary species.
Isaacman, an e-payments billionaire, is a close Musk ally who has flown to space twice with SpaceX as a private astronaut.
He did not appear to view a bid for Mars as incompatible with the Artemis mission, telling senators he did not see any "tough trades here."
"I absolutely want to see us return to the Moon," he said, adding that he did not think NASA would have to make "a binary decision of Moon versus Mars, or Moon has to come first versus Mars."
"I think we could be paralleling these efforts and doing the near impossible, which is exactly why the American taxpayers funded NASA in the first place," he said.
A "first step" would be a return to the Moon, he said, adding: "we should be doing both."
Texas Senator Ted Cruz underscored the strategic value of the Moon when it came to US national security back on Earth.
"We must stay the course -- an extreme shift in priorities at this stage would almost certainly mean a red moon, ceding ground to China for generations to come," the Republican, whose state hosts NASA's massive Johnson Space Center, told the hearing.
"I am hard pressed to think of a more catastrophic mistake we could make in space than saying to Communist China, 'the Moon is yours,'" Cruz continued.
But Isaacman insisted both a moonshot and a Mars-shot were possible.
"We can chart a course for Mars in line with the president's vision to return to the Moon before the Chinese can get there," he said.
Isaacman has also reportedly intervened at the last moment to prevent NASA from suffering the deep cuts made at other agencies by Musk's so-called Department of Government Efficiency.

Water To Cost More In Bengaluru From Tomorrow As Board Revises Tariffs
The Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) is set to revise water tariffs to offset its ever growing expenditure, said Chairman Ram Prasath Manohar on Wednesday.
An official order notifying the new rates will be issued on April 10, he added.
Speaking to the media at the BWSSB headquarters on Wednesday, Manohar said Bengaluru has witnessed rapid growth in both population and geographic spread over the past decade.
BWSSB, an autonomous body without government subsidies, relies heavily on water charges as its primary source of revenue, he said.
"Over the past 10 years, electricity costs have risen by 107 per cent, while maintenance expenses have increased by 122.5 per cent," he added.
According to him, despite a monthly expenditure of Rs 200 crore, the Board currently collects only Rs 120 crore, resulting in a monthly deficit of Rs 80 crore.
"To bridge this financial gap and improve service delivery, a rational and modest tariff revision has been proposed," said Manohar.
Under the domestic category, the proposed tariff hike includes an increase of 0.15 paise per litre, for up to 8,000 litres. For 8,001 to 25,000 litres, an increase of 0.30 paise per litre and between 25,001 and 50,000 litres, an increase of 0.80 paise per litre and above 50,001 litres, an increase of Re 1 per litre are proposed.
For high-rise domestic buildings, till 2,00,000 litres, an increase of 0.30 paise per litre is proposed. While 2,00,001 to 5,00,000 litres, will see an increase of 0.60 paise per litre and above 5,00,001 litres, an increase of Re 1 per litre.
For non-domestic usage, a flat hike of 0.90 paise per litre is proposed for bulk usage. While up to 10,000 litres will cost Re 1 per litre more and from 10,001 to 25,000 litres, Rs 1.30 per litre. Between 25,001 and 50,000 litres, an increase of 1.50 paise per litre is proposed. For 50,001 to 75,000 litres, there will be an increase of 1.90 paise per litre.
But for 75,001 to 1,00,000 litres, the hike is only Rs 1.10 per litre and above 1,00,000 litres, it is Rs 1.20 paise per litre, said Manohar.
He also said following the recommendations of the Karnataka State Administrative Reforms Commission, BWSSB has decided to adopt an annual 3 per cent increase in water tariff starting April 1 every year.
The revised tariff will reflect in bills issued from May onwards.

Beijing Rejects Ukraine's Claim That 'Many' Chinese Fighting For Russia
China on Wednesday rejected Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's claim that many Chinese citizens were fighting for Russia, calling it "absolutely groundless".
Zelensky said Tuesday that Kyiv had captured two Chinese citizens fighting alongside Russian forces, and that there was evidence "many more Chinese citizens" were fighting with Moscow.
Our military has captured two Chinese citizens who were fighting as part of the Russian army. This happened on Ukrainian territory—in the Donetsk region. Identification documents, bank cards, and personal data were found in their possession.
— Volodymyr Zelenskyy / Володимир Зеленський (@ZelenskyyUa) April 8, 2025
We have information suggesting that… pic.twitter.com/ekBr6hCkQL
Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Lin Jian told a press conference it was "absolutely groundless" to suggest many Chinese citizens were fighting in Ukraine.
"The Chinese government has always asked its citizens to stay away from areas of armed conflict (and) avoid involvement in armed conflicts in any form," he said.
He added that Beijing was verifying relevant information with Kyiv.
The Kremlin declined to comment on the matter.
China presents itself as a neutral party in the conflict and says it is not sending lethal assistance to either side, unlike the United States and other Western nations.
But it is a close political and economic partner of Russia, and NATO members have branded Beijing a "decisive enabler" of Moscow's offensive, which it has never condemned.
"The Chinese side's position on the issue of the Ukraine crisis is clear and unequivocal, and has won widespread approval from the international community," Lin said.
"The Ukrainian side should correctly view China's efforts and constructive role in pushing for a political resolution to the Ukraine crisis."
At least two people were killed and two wounded in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region on Wednesday and one man died in the southern region of Kherson during Russian shelling, officials said, as the war grinds through its fourth year.
Paid to join?
Ukrainian troops had captured the two Chinese citizens fighting with Russian forces in the Donetsk region, Zelensky told reporters on Tuesday.
The media outlet Ukrainska Pravda, citing the Ukrainian army, reported that one of the captives had paid $3,480 to an intermediary in China to join the Russian army because he wanted to receive Russian citizenship.
The captive, who is now cooperating with the Ukrainian authorities, also said he was trained in the Russian-occupied Lugansk region as part of a group of Chinese nationals, some of whom had legal issues back home, according to Ukrainska Pravda.
Kyiv released a video of one of the alleged Chinese prisoners showing a man wearing military fatigues with his hands bound.
He mimicked sounds from combat and uttered several words in Mandarin during an apparent interview with a Ukrainian official not pictured.
A senior Ukrainian official told AFP they were captured "a few days ago", adding that there might be more of them.
The official said the prisoners were likely Chinese citizens who were enticed into signing a contract with the Russian army, rather than being sent by Beijing.

Florida To Execute Killer Of Newspaper Employee By Lethal Injection
A 48-year-old man is to be executed by lethal injection in the southern US state of Florida on Tuesday for the April 2000 murder of a newspaper employee who was abducted while on her lunch break.
Michael Tanzi is scheduled to be put to death at 6:00 pm (2200 GMT) at the Florida State Prison in Raiford for the murder of Janet Acosta, 49.
Tanzi would be the third Death Row inmate to be executed in Florida this year and the 11th in the United States.
Tanzi confessed to the murder of Acosta, an employee of the Miami Herald newspaper, and was sentenced to death in 2003.
He kidnapped Acosta while she was eating lunch in her van, forced her to withdraw money from an ATM Machine and sexually assaulted her before strangling her and dumping her body.
He also confessed -- but was never charged -- with the murder of another woman, and a police detective described Tanzi to the Miami Herald as a "fledgling serial killer."
Tanzi's lawyers have tried to halt his execution arguing that there could be problems with the lethal injection because he is "morbidly obese," but their appeals have been rejected.
His execution is one of two scheduled to be carried out in the United States this week.
Mikal Mahdi, 42, is to be executed by firing squad in South Carolina on Friday for the 2004 murder of an off-duty police officer.
Mahdi would be the second person executed by firing squad in South Carolina this year.
The vast majority of US executions since the Supreme Court reinstated the death penalty in 1976 have been performed using lethal injection.
There were 25 executions in the United States last year.
The death penalty has been abolished in 23 of the 50 US states, while three others -- California, Oregon and Pennsylvania -- have moratoriums in place.
President Donald Trump is a proponent of capital punishment and on his first day in office called for an expansion of its use "for the vilest crimes."
Attorney General Pam Bondi announced last week that federal prosecutors would seek the death penalty for Luigi Mangione, charged with the December 4 murder in New York of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson.

Market Crash Matter Of Concern, India Should Negotiate With US: Shashi Tharoor
Expressing concern over Monday's stock market crash following the US government's decision to impose reciprocal tariff on Indian imports, senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor urged the Centre to start negotiations with that nation on bilateral trade.
Amid fears of a global trade war after US President Donald Trump's decision to impose reciprocal tariff on Indian imports, the Sensex crashed over 2,200 points during the day.
Mr Tharoor, while talking to reporters at the Ahmedabad Airport, said the Indian economy will survive and won't go into recession because of its 5.4 per cent growth.
The Thiruvananthapuram MP is here to take part in the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting on Tuesday and the All India Congress Committee (AICC) session on April 9.
"It (today's market crash) is indeed a matter of great concern. We hope India might get some relief (in tariff) during our future negotiations with the US. But, as of now, this is certainly negative news. Global markets, not just Indian, are severely affected. It seems no one understood Trump's logic behind tariffs because the US stock market has also crashed badly," said the Congress leader.
When asked if such a situation would lead to recession, Mr Tharoor said, "Some countries may go into recession but we are better off because we have 5.4 per cent growth. Therefore it (economy) may come down but it will not go into recession." He said Trump's decision to impose higher tariffs on other countries exporting similar goods to the US can benefit India but "at this stage it is impossible to tell".
"We have to ensure we can quickly start negotiations on bilateral trade agreements, which might reduce the effect of this on our economy and exports. But it depends on how successful those negotiations are," said the former diplomat.
"No one could have foreseen such bad news in two-three days. It was on April 2 when tariffs were announced, today is the 7th. The world has suffered so much during these five days. God knows what lies ahead. All we can do is tighten our belts and see how best we can cope with this," he said.

Viral Video Shows Woman Thrashing Mother-In-Law In Gwalior, Dragging Her By Hair
A video of a woman thrashing her mother-in-law in Madhya Pradesh has gone viral with her husband now fearing for his and his mother's life in light of the grisly Meerut murder. The elderly woman is seen being dragged away by her daughter-in-law at their Gwalior home as she tried to save her son from being thrashed by his in-laws.
Vishal Batra, who runs a car spare shop, and his mother Sarla Batra have complained to the police that their in-laws barged into their house and attacked them over what they claimed was a "small issue". Mr Batra later told reporters that his wife had been insisting on sending his mother to the old-age home - which he had refused.
Ms Batra claimed her daughter-in-law called her father on April 1 afternoon after which he reached their house in Adarsh Colony with some goons. CCTV video showed Vishal Batra inside his house when his father-in-law entered the house and abruptly slapped him. He tried to hit back, but some others barged inside and started beating him.
His wife, who was on the first floor, came downstairs and dragged away her mother-in-law, who was seen trying to save her son. The video showed her dragging the woman by her hair and landing some punches on her arms.
Their minor son - visibly scared - was also present during the assault.
Another video showed Mr Batra being assaulted on the streets and his son trying to move his mother away. Sarla Batra, who now has a swollen eye, alleged his son's in-laws dragged him outside and the assault continued. The neighbours soon intervened, and the matter moved to the police station.
"I am being harassed a lot. I can't take it anymore. They called goons, and her father and brother thrashed us. How can someone beat a woman? Now they are threatening to kill us. We are scared and staying away from home," she later told NDTV.
Mr Batra alleged his brother-in-law threatened him at the police station that he would kill him and his mother. And that his in-laws also took over his house - reportedly valued in crores - and locked it, leaving them stranded outside. He alleged that his wife has also threatened to file false charges against him and his mother.
"I am afraid that like the Meerut incident, my wife can kill me and my old mother," he told reporters, pointing to the grisly murder in which a woman and her lover murdered her husband, chopped his body, and concealed it in a drum.
His wife and father-in-law are yet to make a public comment on the matter.
Mr Batra also claimed the police were initially reluctant to help but filed an FIR later. On Friday, he went to the Superintendent of Police's office after which Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Vishal Batra assured him of strict action.

"Country Needs Uniform Civil Code": Karnataka High Court Urges Its Implementation
The Karnataka High Court has urged both the Parliament and State Legislatures to make a concerted effort to enact a law that would bring about a Uniform Civil Code (UCC), emphasising its importance in upholding the constitutional vision of equality, secularism, and justice for all citizens-especially women.
The strong recommendation came from a single-judge bench presided over by Justice Hanchate Sanjeev Kumar while ruling on a civil appeal involving a property dispute among siblings and the husband of a late Muslim woman, Shahnaz Begum.
The case raised broader questions around inheritance laws governed by personal religious statutes and their implications on gender justice.
Justice Kumar asserted that the enactment of a Uniform Civil Code, as envisioned under Article 44 of the Constitution, would fulfill the ideals enshrined in the Preamble-namely, justice, liberty, equality, fraternity, and national unity.
"The country needs a Uniform Civil Code in respect of Personal Laws and religion," the Court on April 4 observed, "only then the object of Article 14 of the Constitution of India will be achieved." The Court underscored that although women across India are equal citizens under the Constitution, they are subjected to unequal treatment due to religion-based personal laws.
The bench contrasted inheritance rights under Hindu and Muslim personal laws to illustrate this disparity.
While Hindu law grants daughters equal rights in ancestral property, Muslim personal law distinguishes between brothers and sisters-granting brothers the status of 'sharers' while the sisters often fall under the 'residuary' category, thereby receiving a lesser share.
Noting that states like Goa and Uttarakhand have already taken steps towards implementing a UCC, the court directed the Registrar General to send a copy of its judgment to the Principal Law Secretaries of both the union government and the Karnataka government, in the hope that legislative efforts toward enacting such a code would be initiated.
The court also drew attention to historical support for the UCC by eminent leaders and constitutional framers.
It cited speeches by Dr BR Ambedkar, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Dr Rajendra Prasad, T. Krishnamachari, and Maulana Hasrat Mohani, noting their backing for a uniform set of civil laws to promote national unity and equality.
The court was adjudicating appeals filed by Samiulla Khan and others, who were contesting the distribution of properties left behind by their sister Shahnaz Begum. The plaintiffs-two brothers and a sister-claimed that both properties in question (referred to as Schedule 'A' and Schedule 'B') were self-acquired by the woman who passed away, and therefore, all three plaintiffs, along with the woman's husband (the defendant), were equally entitled to a 50-50 division.
However, the trial court had earlier partially accepted their claim, granting each brother a 1/10th share in both properties, the sister a 1/20th and 1/10th share in Schedule 'A' and 'B' properties respectively, and the defendant husband a majority share of 3/4th in Schedule 'A' and 1/2 in Schedule 'B'.
In the High Court, the defendant (husband) argued that the properties were not solely acquired by Shahnaz Begum and that she had not inherited any property from her father.
The High Court carefully examined the facts and found that both Schedule 'A' and 'B' properties were jointly acquired by the woman who passed away and her husband, even though they were registered in her name. Schedule 'B' was purchased when the husband had retired, but the Court ruled that the timing of purchase alone could not establish the property as being solely from her earnings.
Rejecting the plaintiffs' appeal, the court ruled that the properties were joint acquisitions and not self-earned by the woman alone.
Accordingly, it revised the trial court's distribution and awarded 1/10th share each to two brothers in both Schedule 'A' and 'B' properties. And awarded 1/20th share in both Schedule 'A' and 'B' to the sister, treating her as a 'residuary' heir under Mahomedan law.
The defendant was awarded 3/4th share in both properties.
This judgment is not just a ruling on a family inheritance dispute; it carries wider legal and political implications.
Justice Kumar's observations on the need for a Uniform Civil Code place the spotlight once again on the long-pending directive under Article 44 of the Constitution, which states that "the State shall endeavour to secure for the citizens a uniform civil code throughout the territory of India." While the legal suggestion by a High Court does not compel the legislature to act, it adds to the growing body of judicial opinion urging a legislative response to the issue.

Walk On Knees, Lick Coins: Kerala Firm's Punishment For Underperforming Employees
A private marketing firm here has been accused of subjecting its underperforming employees to degrading treatment, including making them walk on their knees like chained dogs and lick coins from the floor.
The state Labour department has ordered a probe into the alleged inhuman workplace harassment after the disturbing visuals were aired by local television channels.
As the issue came to the light, state Labour Minister V Sivankutty ordered an inquiry into the undated incident and instructed the district labour officer to submit an immediate report on the incident.
The visuals purportedly showed a person using a leash to force a man to crawl on his knees on the floor, resembling a dog.
Later, some employees told a TV channel that those who fail to achieve targets were subjected to such punishments by the management of the firm.
According to police, the incident allegedly took place in connection with a private marketing firm functioning in Kaloor and the crime allegedly occurred at nearby Perumbavoor.
The police told reporters that they haven't received any complaint and the owner denied the allegations.
Quoting the owner of the firm, they said the alleged harassment might have taken place in a firm in Perumbavoor which used to market and sell the products of the establishment in Kaloor.
"No case has been registered so far and an investigation is underway," an officer said.
Labour Minister Sivankutty termed the visuals "shocking and disturbing" and said it cannot be accepted at any cost in a state like Kerala.
"I have ordered a probe into the incident and instructed the district Labour officer to submit a report in connection with the incident after carrying out a probe," he told the media.
Later in the day, the State Human Rights Commission registerd a case into the incident based on a complaint filed by High Court lawyer Kulathoor Jaisingh.
Meanwhile, the Kerala State Youth Commission also intervened and registerd a case on its own into the alleged harassment incident.
The panel directed the District Police Chief to submit a report in this regard.
In a statement, Commission Chairman M Shajar said legal action should be taken against such practices that are unacceptable in a civilised and democratic society.
"As a civilised society, we should collectively respond against such anti-social trends," he said.

Trump Fires National Security Agency Director Timothy Haugh: Report
US President Donald Trump fired General Timothy Haugh as director of the National Security Agency, in a national security purge that sources said on Friday included more than a dozen staff at the White House national security council.
NSA director Air Force General Haugh, who is also head of US Cyber Command, was dismissed along with Wendy Noble, his deputy at the NSA, two sources familiar with the decision said.
Two other sources said at least 10 staff were let go at the NSC, along with four senior directors, including the entire International Organization (IO) Directorate, which works with international and multilateral groups like the United Nations.
No reason was given for the firings, which took place after the Republican president had an Oval Office meeting with Laura Loomer, a far-right political activist known as a conspiracy theorist, who said on X.com she had given Trump a list of officials she considered disloyal to him.
The White House declined comment and the Pentagon did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Trump has said he wants his administration staffed with those who support his positions.
"We're always going to let go of people - people we don't like or people that take advantage of, or people that may have loyalties to someone else," he told reporters aboard Air Force One on Thursday.
The IO directorate at the National Security Council works with international and multilateral groups, including the UN and Group of Seven. FBI Director Kash Patel formerly served in the directorate.
In both terms, Trump has deprioritized his administration's participation in some of these groups, focusing instead on an "America first" approach to foreign policy.
The NSC firings also included Daniel Gastfriend and Tim Sheeran, both directors with the health security and biodefense directorate, two sources said.
Media outlets including The Washington Post had reported Haugh's firing on Thursday night, citing current and former US officials, who said they did not know the reason for Haugh's dismissal or Noble's reassignment.
Noble was reassigned to a job within the Pentagon's office of the Undersecretary of Defense for Intelligence, the Post said. The NSA is part of the US Defense Department.
US Cyber Command deputy William Hartmann was named acting NSA director and Sheila Thomas, who was executive director at the NSA, was named acting deputy, the newspaper said.
HAUGH WAS NOT ON THE SIGNAL CHAT
Democrats criticized the firings, saying they represented a threat to national security.
Representative Jim Himes, a Connecticut Democrat who is ranking member of the House of Representatives Intelligence Committee, denounced the firings and asked for an explanation.
"I have known General Haugh to be an honest and forthright leader who followed the law and put national security first - I fear those are precisely the qualities that could lead to his firing in this Administration," Himes said.
Senate Intelligence Committee Vice Chairman Mark Warner, a Virginia Democrat, noted that, unlike some other top Trump administration officials, Haugh was not on a discussion of military plans on the Signal commercial messaging app that inadvertently included a magazine journalist, raising security concerns.
"It is astonishing, too, that President Trump would fire the nonpartisan, experienced leader of the National Security Agency while still failing to hold any member of his team accountable for leaking classified information on a commercial messaging app," Warner said in his statement.
Trump, a Republican, has fired multiple nonpartisan top officials at US agencies and installed loyalists since beginning his second term on Jan. 20.
In February, he fired Air Force General C.Q. Brown, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, who was dismissed along with five other admirals and generals in an unprecedented shake-up of US military leadership.
Elon Musk, who is leading the Trump administration's effort to cut and streamline the federal government's workforce, visited the National Security Agency last month to meet Haugh.
The NSA is one of the United States' premier intelligence agencies and uses top-tier, specialized technology and systems to collect and analyze intelligence. US Cyber Command carries out both offensive and defensive operations and monitors the networks of the Department of Defense.

US Wedges Its Way In, Says "Greenland Does Not Want To Be Part Of Denmark"
As Greenland and Denmark, of which it is a part, have vociferously rejected Donald Trump's "strategic buyout" proposal, Washington has struck back, trying to wedge its way in. In a retort to Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Denmark must accept the fact that Greenland no longer wants to be a part of it.
"Denmark should focus on the fact that Greenlanders do not want to be a part of the country anymore. Greenlanders are going to make a decision," Mr Rubio said at the NATO headquarters in Brussels.
Greenland's incoming prime minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen immediately rejected the statement saying Mr Rubio is wrong in saying so. "He is not right that Greenland wants to secede tomorrow," he said. However, he did acknowledge that Greenland wants to attain independence in the long run.
"Greenland does not want to be Danish, but Greenland certainly doesn't want to be American either," he said, defending his country.
Speaking to local TV network TV2, Mr Nielsen said, "We work every day to build a foundation so that we can stand on our own in the future, but we are not there yet. What he (Rubio) says doesn't hold water."
The United States has made Greenland's takeover a top priority and a strategic foreign policy goal - for which it has not ruled out a military offensive either. When Donald Trump first suggested that he wants the US to "buy" Greenland, it was taken as a joke, but over the weeks and months the world understood that there is no humour in it.
Denmark, whose semi-autonomous territory Greenland does not have the diplomatic or military might to stand up to the US, has come to its rescue. But they too are feeling the pressure. Danish PM Mette Frederiksen today accused the US of subjecting Denmark and Greenland to immense "pressure and threats".
She firmly rejected US' attempts to annex Greenland, citing international law.
"You cannot annex other countries - not even under the pretext of international security," Prime Minister Frederiksen said at a press conference with top Greenlandic officials in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland. "National borders, sovereignty, territorial integrity - these are rooted in international law. These principles were established after World War II so that small countries would not have to fear large ones."
"When you seek to take over part of the Kingdom (of Denmark)'s territory, when we are subjected to pressure and threats by our closest ally, what are we to think about the country we have admired for so many years?" Prime Minister Frederiksen questioned.
Both Denmark and Greenland have, for long, been close allies of the United States. The US also has a strategic military and nuclear missile base in Greenland. But President Trump's threats of annexing the arctic island rich in natural and mineral resources, has led to widespread anti-US sentiment and resentment against the Trump Administration.
Last month, Greenlanders held the largest-ever protests in the island's history against the US. Just hours ahead of a visit by US Vice President JD Vance last month, Greenland announced the formation of a new autonomous government. Four political parties, representing 23 of the 31 seats in Greenland's Parliament, signed a historic coalition agreement to establish the new government. Jens-Frederik Nielsen, chairman of the Demokraatit (Democratic Party), will serve as prime minister.

Russian Missile Strike Kills 12 In Ukrainian President Zelensky's Home City
A Russian ballistic missile strike on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's home city of Kryvyi Rig killed 12 people on Friday, including three children, authorities said.
Oleksandr Vilkul, the head of the city's military administration, said more than 50 people were wounded in the evening attack.
"Twelve people were killed in Kryvyi Rig," regional governor Sergiy Lysak said on Telegram.
He added later that this included "three children".
"The number of wounded is constantly increasing. This information will come later. A car and garages are on fire," he said.
Unverified video on social media taken from a distance showed a plume of smoke rising into the evening sky.
Kryvyi Rig, in Ukraine's central Dnipropetrovsk region, is about 60 kilometres (37 miles) from the front line but has regularly been targeted by Russian drones and missiles.
A Russian ballistic attack on the city on Wednesday killed at least four people and wounded more than a dozen others.
The strikes come as US President Donald Trump's administration pushes for a speedy end to the more than three-year war, holding talks with both Russia and Ukraine.
Moscow has rejected a joint US-Ukrainian proposal for an unconditional and full ceasefire, while Ukraine has accused Russia of dragging out talks with no intention of halting its offensive.

Air India's Receives 1st Legacy B777 Plane Back After Heavy Refresh
Air India on Wednesday received the first of its legacy Boeing 777-300 ER aircraft after heavy refresh and the refresh of the remaining 12 planes is expected to be completed by year-end, according to officials.
Since the refit of the legacy B777 aircraft, which was to start last year, has been delayed due to supply chain issues, the airline decided to go for heavy refresh of these planes.
Heavy refresh of an aircraft includes having new carpets, seat covers, cushions and fixing broken seats.
Air India has a total of 40 legacy wide-body planes -- 13 B777s and 27 B787s.
The heavy refresh of the B777-300 ER was done in Singapore and completed in around 50 days. The heavy refresh of all the legacy B777s is expected to be completed by the end of this year, the officials said.
The refreshed aircraft will be deployed on the domestic route for one or two days and later for ultra-long operations.
The B777s are mainly deployed for ultra long haul flights connecting Toronto, Vancouver (Canada) and San Francisco, Chicago, Newark and New York (US).
Ultra-long haul flights are those having a duration of over 14 hours.
Air India has 13 legacy Boeing 777-300 ERs in its fleet of 198 planes. Some of these legacy planes have first-class cabins.
There are a total of 67 wide-body aircraft in the fleet -- 19 B777-300 ERs (including 6 leased from Etihad Airways), 8 B777-200 LRs (including 5 leased from Delta Air Lines), 27 legacy B787-8s, 7 B787-9s and 6 A350-600s.
The first legacy B787 will be flying out for retrofit in April.
The airline also has narrow-body planes -- 14 A321 neos, 13 A321 ceos, 94 A320 neos, 4 A320 ceos and 6 A319s.
Last month, Air India MD and CEO Campbell Wilson said the airline expects to complete the upgradation of all legacy wide body aircraft by mid-2027.
Under the USD 400 million retrofit programme for narrow-body and wide body planes, the first retrofitted A320 neo aircraft is already back in operations. The airline expects to refit all of the 27 A320 neo aircraft by the third quarter of this year.
While talking about the supply situation, Wilson had also said there were pinch points everywhere such as there are no engines for some narrow-body aircraft, there are issues with seat suppliers as well as availability of components and parts of fuselage.
"Reality is that it is going to remain a supply-constrained market, not just for Air India, India, (I am) talking about worldwide... for another 4-5 years," he had said.
In the context of the supply chain woes, he had also said, "We are victims of the circumstances as is every other airline".

Drunk Man Poses As Ajmal Kasab's Brother, Threatens To Blast Control Room: Cops
A 28-year-old drunk security guard was arrested for allegedly posing as a "brother" of Mumbai attack terrorist Ajmal Kasab and threatening to blow up the the police control room and Mumbai Central with a bomb, officials said on Wednesday.
The accused, Piyush Shukla, was angry at police personnel after they asked him to leave the Mulund railway station in the early hours of Tuesday, which is the standard protocol followed by police personnel after the last local trains leave suburban stations.
Shukla felt slighted and decided to lodge a complaint with the police control room. He dialled police helpline number '100' early Tuesday under the influence of alcohol and started abusing the cop who attended the call, an official said.
"He introduced himself as the brother of 26/11 terrorist Mohd Ajmal Kasab and threatened to trigger a bomb blast at the police control room and Mumbai Central," the official said.
Police tracked down Shukla from Thane on Tuesday evening through his mobile phone location.
A case was registered at Mulund police station, the official said, adding that Shukla will be served with a notice.

Lalu Prasad Yadav Admitted To AIIMS-Delhi For Treatment
RJD president and former Bihar chief minister Lalu Prasad was on Wednesday admitted to AIIMS in Delhi for treatment, sources said.
The 76-year-old leader has been admitted to the Cardio Critical Care Unit of the Cardio-Neuro Centre under Dr Rakesh Yadav, Professor of Cardiology at AIIMS, they said.
A team of doctors is monitoring his condition, the sources said.
He was brought to AIIMS for treatment at around 9.35 pm after being admitted to a hospital in Patna for a brief period.
Talking to reporters in Patna, his son and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav said Prasad had developed sores on his back and an arm, which he hopes to get operated upon in Delhi.
"Lalu ji had reached the airport in the afternoon to board his flight for Delhi. My mother Rabri Devi is accompanying him. A sudden drop in blood pressure was noted following which we rushed him to the Paras Hospital," the former deputy chief minister said.
According to Prakash Sinha, who led the team of doctors treating Prasad, "He was kept in the emergency ward where his condition improved after intravenous therapy. He wanted to know if he could go to Delhi in an air ambulance. We asked him to go ahead." Yadav, who is the Leader of the Opposition in the Bihar Assembly, said, "My father is a man of courage. He chose to travel by a normal flight".
The young leader, however, admitted that the family was concerned about the ailing septuagenarian, who has been a diabetic for many years and has also undergone heart surgery and a kidney transplant.
Prasad was convicted in fodder scam cases and has been out on bail for several years on health grounds.

Petition Filed In Allahabad High Court To Stop Justice Yashwant Varma From Taking Oath
A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed before the Allahabad High Court's Lucknow bench on Wednesday seeking a directive to its Chief Justice to refrain from administering the oath to Justice Yashwant Varma, court sources said.
The PIL cited the ongoing in-house inquiry ordered by the Chief Justice of India (CJI) into the recovery of "four to five semi-burnt sacks" of Indian currency notes from the residence of Justice Varma following after a fire incident last month.
Justice Varma was recently transferred from the Delhi High Court to the Allahabad High Court in the midst of the cash stash row.
The PIL, filed by Vikash Chaturvedi, is expected to be heard on April 4, the sources said.
Advocate Ashok Pandey, representing Chaturvedi, argued that since the CJI has reportedly "directed the Allahabad High Court Chief Justice not to assign any judicial work to Justice Varma during the ongoing inquiry, there is no justification for proceeding with the oath ceremony".
The petitioner has also challenged the central government's notification dated March 28, 2025, which accepted the Supreme Court collegium's recommendation to transfer Justice Varma to the Allahabad High Court.

CBI Names Chhattisgarh Ex-Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel In Betting App Case
Former Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel was allegedly one of the beneficiaries of the Mahadev Betting scam, according to an Enforcement Directorate report, which is now part of the CBI FIR, officials said.
The CBI has re-registered the FIR of the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Chhattisgarh police as its own case under the Indian Penal Code sections of 120-B (criminal conspiracy), cheating (420) and Chhattisgarh Gambling (Prohibition) Act.
Bhupesh Baghel has been listed in the FIR as accused number 6 of 19 named.
The allegations have been denied by Baghel, who termed the CBI action as politically motivated.
The CBI registered the FIR on December 18 last year and conducted searches at the residence of Baghel on March 26. The FIR was made public on Tuesday.
According to the procedure in cases referred to the CBI by a state government, the agency re-registers the FIR of the state police as its own case.
Taking the FIR as the starting point of the investigation, the central agency probes the case and gives its findings to a special court in the form of a final report, which may or may not carry the allegations of the FIR.
The FIR of the Chhattisgarh EOW, referred to the CBI by the state government, was filed on the basis of an Enforcement Directorate report to state police.
The ED report, which became part of the EOW FIR and now the CBI case, alleged that Dubai-based Sourabh Chandrakar, Ravi Uppal, Shubham Soni, and Anil Kumar Agrawal are the main owners of the company 'Mahadev Online Book' which ran an online "betting empire" through "massive call centres." The report also said that the promoters and associates of the company have obtained citizenship of Vanuatu in "order to escape the clutches of law." It alleged that Mahadev Online Book and its sister concerns were generating betting proceeds to the tune of Rs 450 crore every month.
The ED has alleged that promoters and associates were dealing in cryptocurrencies to hide the money trail from the authorities.
On the alleged role of Baghel, the ED report said that he has been named by the promoters of Mahadev Online Book as a "beneficiary" of the betting funds.
"It has also been revealed by Chandrabhushan Verma (a police personnel who was the main link between Dubai-based promoters and Chhattisgarh-based powers that be) that his (Baghel's) OSD and political advisor were being paid proceeds out of Mahadev Online Book regularly," the report, now part of the CBI FIR, alleged.
The ED said that in 2023, it had seized Rs 5.39 crore in cash from one Asim Das, an alleged cash courier.
The federal agency said it was able to obtain from the mobile phone of Asim Das a voice note, which was claimed to have been shared by Shubham Soni.
The recording, it alleged, made it "clearly evident" that the seized account was meant for one "Mr Baghel," who was identified by Asim Das as "Ex-CM of state Mr Bhupesh Baghel" in a statement he gave on November 3, 2023.
"As per the voice note, it was also gathered that Shubham Soni was claiming that he had also made such payments prior to this incident," the report said.
The ED had arrested Das in 2023 from a hotel in Raipur, just before the first phase of the Assembly polls in Chhattisgarh.
In the wake of the March 26 searches, Baghel had said the previous Congress government had taken stern action against Mahadev betting app.
"During (previous) Congress government in the state, around 74 FIRs were lodged in connection with Mahadev betting app and more than 200 people were arrested and over 2,000 bank accounts related to it were frozen.
"We took action against the app but they (government agencies) claim we protected the app and took money. How will the one who takes action accept the protection money? Protection money is taken where there is a double engine (government) and betting is still functional," he claimed.
Baghel also claimed that the then Congress government had requested the Centre to issue a lookout circular against Chandrakar and Uppal and arrest them from foreign destinations.
"But (religious guru) Pradeep Mishra, who praises BJP, visited Dubai by becoming a guest of Saurabh Chandrakar and Ravi Uppal. If CBI officials have courage, they should ask Pardeep Mishra whose programme is currently underway in the home district of Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai in Jashpur, about his relations with Saurabh Chandrakar and Pradeep Mishra," Baghel had said.
The CBI, in its statement after the searches, said, "Investigations have revealed that the promoters allegedly paid substantial amounts as 'protection money' to public servants to ensure the smooth and uninterrupted functioning of their illegal betting network."

Delhi Man Declares Living Son Dead To Claim Rs 2 Crore Insurance, Case Filed
A father falsely declared his son dead and obtained a fake cremation certificate to claim a term insurance amount of Rs 2 crore, DCP Dwarka said on Monday. An FIR has been registered against the accused.
DCP Dwarka Ankit Singh said, "In Najafgarh, on March 5, 2025, we received a PCR call of a man reporting his son's bike accident. Father Satish said that his son Gagan was dead and had been cremated. The case was suspicious. ACP Najafgarh asked for a detailed report. The Investigation Officer inquired thoroughly. It was revealed that there was no accident and there was no CCTV footage of one bike hitting another bike."
He further added that even local informers were unaware of any such accident.
"The caller was interrogated. The father said that his son met with an accident and was taken to a rural health centre. From there, he was taken to a private hospital. After his death, he was cremated in Hapur. He also showed a cremation certificate. During interrogation, it was revealed that the father had got his son's term insurance of Rs 2 crore done before 3 months. He orchestrated a plan with an advocate called Manmohan," he further said.
He revealed that the accused was under financial distress due to outstanding loans and debts.
"His financial condition was not good. The advocate supported him. The advocate suggested him to get false documents from a private hospital," he added.
An FIR has been registered in the case.
