Woman Can't Be Forced To Take Virginity Test, Violates Right To Dignity: Court

The Chhattisgarh High Court has said that a woman cannot be forced to undergo a virginity test which violates Article 21 of the Constitution that guarantees her fundamental right to protection of life and liberty, including the right to dignity.

The high court said granting permission for a virginity test would be against the fundamental rights, cardinal principles of natural justice and secret modesty of a female, emphasising that Article 21 is the "heart of fundamental rights".

The observation by high court judge Justice Arvind Kumar Verma came in response to a criminal petition filed by a man who demanded his wife's virginity test alleging she was in an illicit relationship with another man, challenging a family court's order dated October 15, 2024, which rejected the interim application.

The wife had alleged that her husband was impotent and refused to cohabit.

The HC said if the petitioner wants to prove that the allegations of impotency are baseless, he can undergo the concerned medical test or produce any other evidence.

"He cannot possibly be permitted to subject the wife to undergo her virginity test and fill up the lacuna in his evidence".

The order passed on January 9 was made available recently.

The high court noted that the contention of the petitioner demanding a virginity test of his wife is unconstitutional as it violates Article 21 of the Constitution which includes the right to dignity of women.

"Article 21 of the Constitution of India not only guarantees the right to life and personal liberty but also the right to live with dignity, which is crucial for women.

"No woman can be forced to conduct her virginity test. It is a violation of fundamental rights guaranteed under Article 21. It has to be borne in mind that Article 21 is the 'heart of fundamental rights'," the high court stated.

Justice Verma further said that the virginity test is a violation of the basic right of women to be treated with decency and proper dignity.

"The right to personal liberty enshrined under Article 21 is non-derogable and cannot be tinkered with in any manner. The petitioner cannot possibly be permitted to subject the wife to undergo her virginity test and fill up the lacuna in his evidence in this regard.

"Be that as it may, but in any case, granting the permission for virginity test of the respondent would be against her fundamental rights, the cardinal principles of natural justice and secret modesty of a female," the high court noted.

Non-derogable human rights refer to rights that are absolute and may not be subject to any derogation, even in times of war or emergency.

The bench further observed that the allegations made by both parties against each other are the subject matter of evidence and a conclusion can be drawn only after evidence.

"The High Court is of the considered opinion that the order impugned is neither illegal nor perverse and there is no judicial error committed by the trial court," it said.

The couple got married on April 30, 2023, as per Hindu rites. They lived together at the husband's family residence in Korba district.

The wife allegedly told her family members that her husband is impotent and she refused to establish a marital relationship or cohabit with her husband, the petitioner's counsel said.

She filed an interim application on July 2, 2024, under section 144 of the Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) before the family court in Raigarh district seeking maintenance of Rs 20,000 from her husband.

In response to the maintenance claim interim application, the petitioner sought a virginity test of his wife alleging that she was in an illicit relationship with her brother-in-law. He claimed the marriage was never consummated.

On October 15, 2024, the family court in Raigarh rejected the husband's request following which he filed a criminal petition in the High Court.

The case is currently at evidence stage in the family court.

Disha Salian Was Depressed Over Father's Misuse Of Money: Cops' Closure Report

The Mumbai police's closure report in the Disha Salian death case had termed it a suicide and asserted she was battling depression due to various reasons, including misuse of her money by her father, an official said on Friday.

Disha Salian was a former manager of actor Sushant Singh Rajput. She allegedly committed suicide by jumping off the 12th floor of her building in Jankalyan Nagar in north Mumbai's Malad area on June 8, 2020, as per police.

The closure report by Malvani police, which probed the incident, was submitted to a superior officer (as per rules for accidental death report) on February 4, 2021.

As part of the probe, Malvani police recorded statements of her friends and some witnesses, during which it came to light that she was depressed due to some failed projects, misunderstanding with friends and misuse of her money by her father, the official said.

The police had also recorded statements of actors with whom Disha Salian was communicating on behalf of her company, he added.

After the case got entangled in an acrimonious tussle between political parties, the Mumbai police set up a Special Investigation Team, though its report is still awaited.

Last week, her father Satish Salian moved Bombay High Court seeking a fresh probe into the mysterious circumstances under which she was found dead in June 2020.

He also urged the HC to order the registration of a First Information Report against Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray, and transfer of the probe to the Central Bureau of Investigation.

Woman Can Be Held Guilty Of Instigating Rape: Madhya Pradesh High Court

A woman can be held guilty of instigating rape, even if she is not the prime accused in the case, the Madhya Pradesh High Court said on Thursday.

The court said that under section 109 of Indian Penal Code (IPC), a person who abets or encourages a crime is equally responsible in the eyes of the law. It referred to the IPC as the crime took place on August 21, 2022, nearly two years before the new criminal laws came into effect.

Justices Pramod Agarwal and Prashant Gupta were hearing a case pertaining to the rape of a woman in Bhopal's Chhola Mandir police station area. According to the prosecution, the accused's mother and brother encouraged the survivor to get into a physical relationship with him, leading to the crime.

The court upheld that the mother's act of instigation made her an accomplice in the crime. It held the man guilty of rape.

In her complaint, the survivor alleged that her neighbour had initially proposed to marry her. When she went to his house, his mother and brother sent her to a room, where he locked the door and raped her. Later, he refused to marry her.

The neighbour was charged under sections 376 and 376(2) - both dealing with rape, 506 (criminal intimidation) and 34 (common intention) of IPC. His mother was charged under section 109 (abetment to rape).

Explaining the rationale behind the court's remarks, government advocate CM Tiwari said: "Since the mother encouraged the survivor to get into a relationship, the court found her equally responsible. The accused was convicted of rape and the woman was considered an equal participant in the crime."

Bangladesh's Yunus Meets Xi, Calls For China To Play "Greater Role" In Ensuring Peace

China and Bangladesh on Friday signed nine agreements after Muhammad Yunus' meeting with President Xi Jinping during which the Bangladesh Chief Adviser highlighted student protests that led to regime change in Dhaka and urged Beijing to play a "greater role" in establishing peace and stability.

Additionally, Bangladesh secured a commitment of USD 2.1 billion in investments, loans and grants from the Chinese government and its companies, Bangladesh's official news agency BSS reported.

Bangladesh welcomed Chinese companies to participate in the Teesta River Comprehensive Management and Restoration Project (TRCMRP), according to a joint statement issued after the meeting between Yunus and Xi.

The previous Hasina government wanted India to do the Teesta river basin project.

Bangladesh welcomed Chinese companies to also participate in the Mongla Port Facilities Modernisation and Expansion Project, the joint statement said.

After his talks with Xi, the two countries signed nine agreements enhancing economic and technical cooperation between the two governments and cooperation in the areas of development, translation and publication of classical literary work, exchange and cooperation on cultural heritage, news exchange and media, and health sector, state-run news agency Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) said.

As the two leaders discussed issues related to bilateral interest, Yunus urged China to play a greater role in establishing peace, prosperity and stability for both nations, the BSS report said.

Yunus' China visit is keenly watched as he is scheduled next week to attend the BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok, where he has sought a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. India is yet to confirm the meeting.

Highlighting the last year's July-August students' mass protests in Bangladesh leading to the ouster of Sheikh Hasina government, Yunus told Xi that the movement paved a way to build a "New Bangladesh".

Weeks before her ouster last year, Hasina too had made a high-profile visit to Beijing during which she held talks with Xi.

The Interim government headed by Yunus took charge days after she fled to India on August 5.

Xi, on his part, spoke about the long-standing history of "friendly exchanges" between the two countries and said China maintained a high degree of stability and continuity in ties with Bangladesh and Beijing continues to be a trustworthy neighbour, friend and partner of Dhaka, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

The Chinese president said China would continue to grant zero-tariff facilities to Bangladeshi goods and extend the status until the end of 2028 - two years after Bangladesh's scheduled graduation from a least developed country, a statement from Yunus' office said in Dhaka.

He said Beijing would like to start negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement and Investment Agreement with Dhaka to pave the way for more Chinese investment in the South Asian nation This year marks the 50th anniversary of China-Bangladesh diplomatic ties, and 2025 is also the year of people-to-people exchanges between the two countries, Xi said, expressing his willingness to take the ties to a new level.

Yunus sought a 50-year master plan from Beijing for its river water management, calling China the "master of water management".

During a meeting with Chinese water resources minister Li Guoying, Bangladesh's Chief Adviser, effectively the prime minister, praised Chinese water and flood management system, saying the country did wonders in managing some of the intractable water issues, the BSS said.

Since the Yunus government took over, China has been hosting a number of Bangladesh delegations including Bangladesh's Adviser for Foreign Affairs Touhid Hossain and hardline Islamic parties such as the Jamaat-e-Islami and opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).

Analysts here say that Beijing at the same is carefully watching the unfolding chaotic situation in Dhaka and the pressure mounting on 84-year-old Yunus to hold elections without making any major commitments.

Besides the nine agreements, Bangladesh and China have agreed to strengthen cooperation in such areas as hydrological forecasting, flood prevention and disaster reduction, river dredging, integrated management of water resources, water resources development and related technology sharing, BSS reported.

The two sides spoke positively about the signing of the Implementation Plan of the MoU on Exchange of Hydrological Information of the Yarlung Zangbo and Jamuna River. The Brahmaputra river is called Yarlung Zangbo in Tibet and Jamuna in Bangladesh.

India and China had a similar MOU to exchange river data.

Bangladesh and China also agreed to strengthen exchanges on maritime affairs and hold a new round of Dialogue on Maritime Cooperation at an appropriate time, Bangladesh media reports said.

Yunus, who is on a four-day visit, took part in China's Boao Forum for Asia annual conference in Hainan after his arrival on Wednesday.

He arrived in Beijing on Thursday night and was received at the airport by Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong.

Ahead of his meeting with Xi, Yunus on Thursday called for a reduction of interest rates for Chinese loans from three per cent to 1-2 per cent to Bangladesh and sought a waiver of commitment fees on the Chinese-funded projects in Bangladesh.

In his meeting with the Chinese Executive Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang on the sidelines of the Boao Forum for Asia annual conference, Yunus sought Chinese support for an array of development projects.

China is Bangladesh's fourth-largest lender after Japan, the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank, with total loans disbursed since 1975 coming to USD 7.5 billion, according to a report in the Daily Star newspaper of Bangladesh.

Yunus' Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam said that Xi reiterated China's support to the Chief Adviser and his interim government and considered his request about the loans.

Xi has assured Yunus that his country would encourage Chinese investment and relocation of Chinese manufacturing enterprises to Bangladesh, Alam said.

The Yunus government is pitching for a shift of industries from China to ward off heavy tariffs being imposed by US President Donald Trump on Chinese goods.

Later, addressing a meeting of Chinese investors, Yunus urged them to increase their investments in Bangladesh highlighting it could be a transport destination in the region.

Both sides discussed various strategic bilateral issues, trade and investment growth, agriculture, infrastructure, support for renewable energy sectors, and resolving the Rohingya issue, as well as overall issues of mutual interest between the two countries, eyeing a new chapter in relations, according to Bangladesh media reports.

Elderly Couple Loses Rs 50 Lakh To Cyber Fraud In Karnataka, Dies By Suicide

An elderly couple in Khanapur taluk, Belagavi district, died by suicide after falling victim to cyber fraud and alleged harassment, police said on Friday.

Diogjeron Santan Nazareth (82) and his wife Flaviana (79), residents of Beedi village in Khanapur, had no children, police added.

A two-page handwritten death note left behind by Diogjeron stated their decision to end their lives and requested that no one be blamed, as they did not want to live at the mercy of anyone, police said.

The incident came to light on Thursday when neighbours found Flaviana lifeless on the bed, while Diogjeron's body was discovered in the underground water tank of their house, they added.

Diogjeron, a retired Maharashtra government secretariat employee, died by stabbing himself in the neck. Injuries were also found on his wrist, police said.

Flaviana is suspected to have consumed poison, though confirmation awaits the autopsy report, they added.

In the death note, Diogjeron named two individuals-Sumit Birra and Anil Yadav. He wrote that Birra, who claimed to be a telecom department official from New Delhi, informed him that a SIM card had been fraudulently purchased in his name and was being used for harassment and illegal advertisements. Birra later transferred the call to Yadav, who claimed to be from the Crime Branch.

Yadav demanded details of Diogjeron's property and finances, threatening legal consequences over the alleged SIM card misuse, according to the death note, police said.

Falling prey to the scam, Diogjeron transferred over Rs 50 lakh to them, but they continued to demand more, police added, citing digital transaction records.

He also mentioned taking a gold loan of Rs 7.15 lakh, with interest due on June 4.

"The amount should be paid, and the gold should be sold. The amount received after adjusting the principal and interest should be paid to the named persons," the note read.

Diogjeron further stated that he had borrowed money from friends and requested that the loans be repaid by selling his wife's gold bangles and earrings.

"Now I am 82 years old, and my wife is 79. We have no one to support us. We do not want to live at the mercy of anyone, so we have taken this decision," the note said.

He also expressed a wish for their bodies to be donated to a medical institution for students to study.

Police have taken his mobile phone, the knife, and the suicide note into custody as part of the investigation.

"Based on the death note and preliminary inquiry, we have registered a case of abetment to suicide and cyber fraud against the two accused named in the note. Further investigation is underway," said Belagavi Superintendent of Police Bhimashankar Guled.

"We'll Be Ruined In 3-6 Months If...": P Chidambaram's Warning On US Tariffs

Congress leader P Chidambaram asked the government to spell out India's response to US President Donald Trump's threat of tariff war, alleging that no discussion in parliament or consultation with Opposition parties has been held over the matter.

He called for finding common ground with other nations that share the same interests in pushing back against Mr Trump, and warned that if Mr Trump starts picking out individual countries and applying different tariffs, the affected nations could be left to fend on their own.

In an interview to NDTV, Mr Chidambaram said if the Indian government's perception is that America is taking one step forward and two steps backwards, it must have a policy to counteract that.

"I mean, it can't be in uncertainty. Of course, Americans are uncertain, let's assume so. But you must have alternative scenarios. What if they take one step forward? What is our response? What if they take two steps backward? What is our response? And that response need not be made public to the whole world, but at least there must be a statement in parliament, or there must be a consultation with opposition parties. We are completely in the dark," Mr Chidambaram, who was Union finance minister under the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government, told NDTV.

"In fact, my information is, most ministers are in the dark. Who is involved in making this reactive policy to America's uncertain policy? I don't know. Nobody seems to know," he said.

Mr Trump's decision to slap a 25 per cent tariff on all auto imports has cast uncertainty over India's nearly $7 billion of exports to the US, which industry fears could squeeze margins. Automobiles and car parts imported to the US would face a 25 per cent tariff starting April 2.

While India is not a big exporter of cars to the US, Tata Motors' luxury car subsidiary Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is deeply entrenched in the American market. Indian auto ancillary firms will see the biggest hit as they export a lot of components to the US.

About a fifth of the revenue of India's auto component sector is derived from exports. Of this, 27 per cent is to the US market alone.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

"I think the government is making sort of impromptu, unilateral, knee-jerk decisions. For example, in the Budget speech, they got rid of the 2 per cent tax. Day before yesterday, the finance minister announced that the 6 per cent digital service tax, popularly known as the Google tax, will go. Now, what more are they going to concede to Mr Trump?" Mr Chidambaram said.

"If you don't wish to have a public discussion in parliament, then you should at least invite the principal opposition parties which are represented in parliament and take leaders into confidence of what alternative scenarios are being worked out," he added.

Mr Chidambaram defended his comment that most ministers are in the dark on this matter.

"I think at the moment, only the external affairs minister and perhaps the commerce minister who went on a delegation to the US are privy to what is going on. I don't think other ministers know. I'm sure the agriculture minister does not know. I'm sure the industries minister does not know. But they are making concessions? I don't know. Are you making concessions on agriculture? Are you making concessions on industrial goods? Are you making concessions on intellectual property? I don't think anybody knows," the former Union finance minister said.

He said India should put its interest first, but many countries are finding common ground in acknowledging that unilateral tariffs imposed by the US are unacceptable.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

"There are WTO rules; there are multilateral and bilateral trade agreements; there are international laws and conventions. So if you want to rewrite the tariffs of several countries, you must hold a discussion. This is what Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada is doing. He has taken his parliament into confidence, at least the leaders into confidence. And he says we will coordinate with the European countries and respond to Mr Trump's unilateral tariffs," Mr Chidambaram said.

"Now, I'm sure the oil producing countries are also coordinating among themselves. We are a major agricultural exporter. We are a major textile exporter. We also export a lot of industrial goods. So we must band together with countries which are in the world market for agricultural exports, textile exports, and industrial goods exports, and evolve a common approach. You see, if he [Mr Trump] picks one country at a time, and imposes tariffs, it will ruin the economy of that country.

"Suppose he picks India, and he leaves other countries out. Suppose President Trump picks India and says, 'these are the tariffs from goods exported from India', we'll be ruined. In a matter of three to six months, our economy will be ruined.

"I'm afraid Mr Trump is not going to group all the countries together and impose universal tariffs. He's giving a number for each country, what they have calculated, I'm told, calculated as the average weighted trade tariff. And he's going to pick one by one and force them to surrender. If he does that, and if he picks India, other countries will say, 'we have not been picked up'. So unless you take action to forestall such picking out countries, and imposing tariffs, you'll be left high and dry after the first attack," Mr Chidambaram said.

"Will Consider All Options": Countries Vow Retaliation For Trump's 25% Auto Tariffs

World powers on Thursday blasted US President Donald Trump's steep tariffs on imported vehicles and parts, vowing retaliation as a widening trade war intensifies.

Major car exporter Germany urged a firm response from the European Union, while Japan said it "will consider all options."

The US duties take effect starting April 3 and impact foreign-made cars and light trucks. Key automobile parts will also be hit within the month.

Global stock markets plummeted with automakers like Toyota, Hyundai and Mercedes leading the plunge. In New York, shares in General Motors tumbled with Ford and Stellantis also declining.

France Finance Minister Eric Lombard condemned the "hostility," saying the only solution for the European Union is to "raise tariffs on American products in response."

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he convened a meeting to discuss trade options, while Mexico's Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard has sought "preferential treatment" for his country.

As Washington's major trading partners warned of retaliation, Trump ramped up his threats.

He said on social media that Canada and the EU could face "far larger" tariffs if they worked together "to do economic harm to the USA."

Trump ally and Tesla boss Elon Musk said his company would not be spared the pain, writing on X: "To be clear, this will affect the price of parts in Tesla cars that come from other countries. The cost impact is not trivial."

The American Automotive Policy Council warned that the tariffs must be implemented in a way that "avoids raising prices for consumers" and preserves the industry's competitiveness.

While Trump has invoked emergency economic powers for some earlier tariffs, his auto levies build on a government investigation completed in 2019.

'Cheaters'

The Center for Automotive Research previously estimated that US tariffs -- including those on imported autos and metals -- could raise the price of a car by thousands of dollars and weigh on the jobs market.

In a briefing after the announcement, Trump's senior counselor Peter Navarro blasted "foreign trade cheaters" who he said turned the US manufacturing sector into a "lower wage assembly operation for foreign parts."

He took aim at Germany and Japan for reserving the construction of higher-value parts to their countries.

Since returning to the presidency, Trump has imposed fresh tariffs on imports from major trading partners Canada, Mexico and China -- alongside a 25 percent duty on steel and aluminum.

The latest levies will be in addition to those already in place for autos.

The White House added that vehicles entering under the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) can qualify for a lower rate depending on their American content.

Similarly, USMCA-compliant auto parts will remain tariff-free as officials establish a process to target their non-US content.

'Devastating Impact'

Uncertainty over Trump's trade plans and worries they could trigger a downturn have roiled financial markets, with consumer confidence also slipping.

Trump has defended the levies as a way to raise government revenue and revitalize US industry.

Targeting imported cars could strain ties with Washington's allies, however.

"Imposing 25 percent tariffs on imported cars will have a devastating impact on many of our close trading partners," said Wendy Cutler, vice president at the Asia Society Policy Institute and a former US trade negotiator.

Washington has free-trade agreements with some affected parties, "calling into question the value of US commitments" under a trade deal, she added.

About one in two cars sold in the United States are manufactured in the country. Among imports, about half come from Mexico and Canada, with Japan, South Korea and Germany also major suppliers.

Besides automobiles, Trump is eyeing other sector-specific tariffs, including on pharmaceuticals, semiconductors and lumber.

Trump has promised a "Liberation Day" on April 2, when he is set to unveil reciprocal levies, tailored to different trading partners, to address practices that his government deems unfair.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said these would focus on countries that have been "ripping off the United States," although Trump earlier said some numbers would be more conservative than many expected.

Steel, Champagne, Now Cars: What Trump Has Tariffed, What May Follow

From champagne to steel and now cars: it is getting harder to keep up with US President Donald Trump's growing tariff target list and the retaliatory measures by trade partners.

Here is a rundown of what has been implemented, threatened and coming next in an escalating trade war:

Car Clash

Trump announced Wednesday that the United States would charge a 25 per cent tariff on auto imports, with levies to be collected starting on April 3.

Germany and France, homes to major companies such as Volkswagen, Mercedes and Jeep maker Stellantis, said the European Union would have retaliate while Japan and Canada were weighing their options.

Trump warned that if the EU and Canada work together "to do economic harm to the USA, large-scale Tariffs, far larger than currently planned, will be placed on them both".

Tariffs In Place

In early March, Trump imposed a 20 per cent tariff on products from China, which has a huge trade surplus with the United States and was already his top target during his first presidential term in 2017-2021.

Beijing has retaliated by taking aim at US agricultural products, such as poultry, wheat and cotton.

A 25 per cent US tariff on steel and aluminium from around the world came into effect in mid-March.

Trump's goal is to protect the declining US steel industry as it faces growing competition, especially from Asia.

The United States imports around half the steel and aluminium used in the country to make items ranging from cars and planes to soft-drink cans.

Canada is the leading supplier of steel to the United States, followed by Brazil then the EU.

Ottawa retaliated with additional tariffs on Can$29.8 billion ($20.7 billion) of US goods, from steel to computers and sports equipment.

Moves Paused

The European Commission responded to the steel tariffs by announcing plans to target US goods ranging from bourbon to boats and motorbikes, and worth a total $28 billion.

But Brussels said last week that the tariffs, originally due to take effect on April 1, would be delayed by two weeks to give more time for dialogue.

Trump threatened to retaliate by putting a 200 per cent tariff on champagne, wine and other spirits from the European Union.

The US leader has also delayed tariffs on goods from Canada and Mexico, both of which are ready to retaliate.

Next Big Date: April 2

Trump has signed plans for sweeping "reciprocal tariffs" that could hit both allies and adversaries by April 2 -- what he has since coined as "Liberation Day".

The levies would be tailored to each US trading partner and take into account the tariffs they impose on American goods, alongside taxes the White House calls discriminatory, such as value-added taxes.

It is also the day that the delayed tariffs from Mexico and Canada are supposed to come into force.

Other Threats

Trump announced earlier this week that he would slap 25 per cent tariffs on imports from countries buying oil and gas from Venezuela, a punitive measure that could hit China and India in particular.

He has also vowed that products from the 27-nation European Union would be hit with a tariff of 25 per cent, claiming that the bloc has "taken advantage of us".

The EU has a $50-billion trade surplus with the United States.

US Health Department To Cut 10,000 Jobs As Part Of Overhaul

The US health department will reduce its workforce by around 10,000 full-time employees as part of a broader cost-cutting overhaul of the federal government, according to an official statement released Thursday.

Including early retirements and so-called "deferred resignations," the total downsizing will shrink the department from 82,000 to 62,000 employees.

"We aren't just reducing bureaucratic sprawl," said Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr. "We are realigning the organization with its core mission and our new priorities in reversing the chronic disease epidemic."

Simultaneous Polls Do Not Trample Constitution: Attorney General To Joint Panel

Attorney General R Venkatramani told a parliamentary panel on Tuesday that the bills for simultaneous elections do not trample on any feature of the Constitution and are good in law, sources said.

With a few of the legal experts who have appeared before the Joint Committee of Parliament sharing concerns of some members over certain aspects of the constitution amendment bill, R Venkatramani asserted that the proposed laws do not require any amendment, the sources said.

Opposition parties have slammed the bills as violative of the Constitution.

However, former Delhi High Court chief justice D N Patel, who is currently serving as Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal chairman, in his presentation dwelt on the positives as well as challenges facing the "One Nation One Election" proposal, noting the concept is good for the nation but adding any proposed law can always be improved on.

Justice Patel cited policy continuity, enhanced governance with a focus on long-term policies, informed voting with people in a position for better assessment of the performance of political parties and cost reductions as positives.

He, however, noted "federalism concerns with potential impact on state autonomy", a risk of national issues overshadowing regional ones besides the constitutional hurdles of the need to amend some of the Articles as among the challenges facing the proposals.

He said the tenures of some of the assemblies could be extended in a step towards synchronization of state polls with the Lok Sabha elections, an idea not part of the current bills.

The sources said Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra questioned if countries like Sweden and Belgium can be compared with a country like India when Patel cited them as examples of the global practice of simultaneous polls.

She also said all the claims about the benefits of simultaneous elections are mostly conjectures, as no study has been done.

R Venkatramani, the sources said, told the members that he is the Attorney General for India and not the government, in an apparent attempt to dispel any impression that he will side with the government's opinion on the matter.

He told the members of the committee headed by BJP MP P P Chaudhary that he would submit replies to their further questions sent to him.

Mr Chaudhary later told reporters that simultaneous elections are in the interest of the country, and the committee is deliberating on the best ways to carry it out.

The views received by legal luminaries will help the panel form its recommendations, he said.

Group Dumps "Sewage" Inside Popular DMK Critic's House, Issues Threat

Popular Youtuber and vocal critic of the ruling DMK in Tamil Nadu, Savukku Shankar's residence here was targeted on Monday by a group of persons who allegedly dumped "sewage and human faeces" inside the house.

AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami, BJP Tamil Nadu President K Annamalai, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi top leader Thol Thirumavalavan, MDMK chief Vaiko and actor-politician Vijay-led Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam general secretary N Anand strongly condemned the incident and sought tough action against the perpetrators of the crime.

K Palaniswami, referring to dumping of sewage and faeces said no one with faith in democracy could tolerate it. In case lawful action was not taken, the former chief minister warned of stern action after his party assumes power. State Assembly election is due in Mar-Apr 2026.

VCK chief Thirumavalavan said the incident was the peak of uncivilised behaviour; one that could bring a bad name to the DMK government. MDMK top leader Vaiko said such despicable incidents by cowards, who could not challenge an opinion by way of counterpoints could never be allowed.

Annamalai said, "we can realise based on whose instigation this is happening," as police allegedly did not act even 3-hours after the intruders had trespassed into Shankar's house. TVK's Anand said legal action was the only recourse if someone's criticism was not acceptable and condemned orchestrating such atrocity.

Asked on action being taken, a senior police official said a probe was on and appropriate action will be taken.

Meanwhile, a city police release, citing a complaint from Shankar's mother said a 20-member group barged into the house, used abusive language and issued threat. "Legal action will be taken on the basis of the complaint," the statement added.

Shankar posted on 'X', a video clip, from CCTV footage, of sewage being poured into his compound and he claimed human faeces was also dumped inside his house.

He alleged that the attack on his house was telecast live by a Tamil Nadu Congress Committee supporter on Facebook and he provided a link to that telecast on his 'X' account. Shankar told reporters that the group took away his 68-year old mother, Kamala's phone, who was alone in the house at that time, and spoke to him on a video call and threatened him.

He alleged the attack was carried out by a group of persons claiming to be sanitary workers and that they gained access by breaking open the backside door of his house. The intruders included some women as well.

Though police was alerted immediately, Shankar claimed they did not arrive at the spot "till 40 minutes." The Youtuber alleged that the intruders issued "death threat," to him. On the trigger to the incident, Shankar claimed that in December 2024 he exposed "corruption" vis-a-vis the use of 230 vehicles, provided under a government scheme, for sewage clearance related tasks and a top Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) leader had a key role in facilitating corruption and receipt of kickbacks.

He said an FIR had been filed against him for allegedly denigrating sanitary workers. It was a false accusation against him, he claimed and asserted he had only spoken in favour of sanitary workers and only in order to protect their interests.

Shankar, a political activist as well alleged that a top police official was also behind the attack. "No one knows that I am here in this house, no one knows this address, I have been living here only for the past 3 months." Shankar alleged that without the top police official's help the attack could not have happened. Only one sub-inspector and a constable were sent to his house. Shankar claimed that all along he had been getting threats, asking him to stop his media related work. "I see this as the final warning since I have been talking against this (DMK regime) government and the police." Also, he said his landlord has now asked him to vacate the house and pressure was being exerted on him to stop his work.

"This government will stoop to such a level and this is what I have been saying for the past 4 years," he told media. In the social media, Savukku Shankar said on Monday night that, "he does not like to run media (YouTube Channel--Savukku Media) by putting at risk the life of his mother." Further, he said, "this channel cannot be run, this is not my failure, but this is the failure of this society." Shankar said the property owner who had provided office space to run the channel has also asked him to vacate.

Did Shivaji Have A Dog? Call To Remove Dog Memorial From Raigad Fort

Former Rajya Sabha member and a descendant of the Kolhapur royal family, Sambhajiraje Chhatrapati, has asked Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to remove the memorial of a dog from Raigad Fort.

The memorial, built in 1920s, was for "Waghya" meaning "Tiger".

Legend has it that he was a mix breed dog of the Maratha emperor. When Shivaji died, the dog apparently jumped onto his funeral pyre and immolated himself.

The Archaeological Survey of India, however, maintained that there is no documentary evidence of such a dog, Sambhajiraje Chhatrapati has claimed.

The former MLA, in a letter to the Chief Minister dated March 22, has stressed that the dog's memorial should be removed before May 31.

"A few decades ago, a memorial of a dog named Waghya was erected near that of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at the Raigad Fort, his capital in the 17th century," his letter read.

"However, there is no documentary evidence concerning Waghya, the name of the pet dog of Shivaji Maharaj. As there is no such evidence, it is an encroachment on the fort, which is legally preserved as a heritage structure," he had added.

"It is unfortunate and demeans the legacy of the great Shivaji Maharaj," said the ex-MP.

A structure older than 100 years is protected as per ASI's policy. The dog's commemorative structure should be removed before it earns such a status, Sambhajiraje added.

"Coming To Terms With...": Missing Indian Student's Parents Break Down

The parents of Indian student Sudiksha Konanki, who went missing from a beach in the Dominican Republic on March 6, have said in an emotional announcement that they are coming to terms with the fact that she has drowned.

In a video, Ms Konanki's father Subbarayudu can be seen fighting back tears as he says that authorities "on both sides", presumably from the US and the Dominican Republic, have told them that the waves were very high at the time of the incident and that the person of interest in the case, 22-year-old Joshua Riibe, was not a suspect.

With his wife, Sreedevi, sobbing beside him, Mr Konanki says, "Both sides of the authorities have shown us how high the ocean waves were at the time of the incident and both sides of the authorities have clarified that the person of interest was not a suspect from the beginning."

Wiping away a tear from his eye, he continues speaking but gets only as far as "It is with deep sadness and a heavy heart..." when his wife cups her face with her hands, sobbing louder, and turns away from the camera. Mr Konanki comforts her and pulls her towards him before saying, "...and a heavy heart that we are coming to terms with the fact that our daughter has drowned. This is incredibly difficult for us to process. We kindly ask you to keep our daughters in your prayers."

CNN has reported that the Konankis have asked for their daughter to be declared dead to "seek closure".

Ms Konanki, 20, a citizen of India and a permanent resident of the United States, studied at the University of Pittsburgh. She went to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic with five friends on March 3.

Footage from March 5 shows her drinking at the bar of a hotel called Riu Republica before going to the beach with a group of people, including Riibe.

Ms Konanki was seen entering the beach at 4.15 am and all of her friends had returned by 5 am. Riibe, an Iowa resident and student at St Clou State University in Minnesota, told authorities that he had tried to rescue her after they were dragged in by a wave and she got tired of swimming

Riibe's passport was confiscated by authorities in the Dominican Republic and he was interviewed for six hours, but he is not considered a suspect.

The request for the student being declared dead "supports the wishes of Ms Konanki's grieving parents to seek closure in their request that the Dominican law enforcement authorities acknowledge the death of their daughter by accidental drowning," the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office in Virginia, where Ms Konanki's family lives, told CNN.

Israel Minister Threatens To Annex Parts Of Gaza Unless Hamas Frees Hostages

Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz threatened Friday to annex parts of the Gaza Strip unless Hamas militants release the remaining Israeli hostages held in the war-battered Palestinian territory.

The warning came as Israel stepped up the renewed assault it launched on Tuesday, shattering the relative calm that had reigned in the war-battered territory since a January 19 ceasefire.

Gaza's civil defence agency said Israeli strikes killed 11 people on Friday -- three in pre-dawn strikes and eight more during the daytime.

On Thursday, it reported a death count of 504 since the bombardment resumed, one of the highest since the war began more than 17 months ago with Hamas's attack on Israel.

"I ordered (the army) to seize more territory in Gaza... The more Hamas refuses to free the hostages, the more territory it will lose, which will be annexed by Israel," Katz said in a statement.

Should Hamas not comply, Katz also threatened "to expand buffer zones around Gaza to protect Israeli civilian population areas and soldiers by implementing a permanent Israeli occupation of the area".

The military urged residents of the Al-Salatin, Al-Karama and Al-Awda areas of southern Gaza to evacuate their homes on Friday ahead of a threatened strike.

"For your safety, head south toward the known shelters immediately," Israeli military spokesman Avichay Adraee said in a post on X.

AFP images from northern Gaza showed donkey carts piled high with belongings as residents fled their homes along rubble-strewn roads.

- 'Pressure points' -

Israel resumed intensive bombing of Gaza on Tuesday, citing deadlock in indirect negotiations on next steps in the truce after its first stage expired early this month.

Its resumption of large-scale military operations was coordinated with US President Donald Trump's administration but drew widespread condemnation.

Turkey condemned what it said was a "deliberate" attack by Israel on a Turkish-built hospital in Gaza. "We strongly condemn the destruction by Israel of the Turkish-Palestinian Friendship Hospital," its foreign ministry said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed "concern" over the fresh Israeli assault in a telephone call Friday with the ruler of Qatar, one of the mediators of the January ceasefire.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog expressed concern about the government's actions in a video statement on Thursday, saying it was "unthinkable to resume fighting while still pursuing the sacred mission of bringing our hostages home".

Thousands of protesters have rallied in Jerusalem in recent days, accusing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of resuming military operations without regard for the safety of the hostages.

Of the 251 hostages seized during Hamas's October 7, 2023 attack, 58 are still held by Gaza militants, including 34 the Israeli military says are dead.

The Israeli military said on Thursday that it had closed off the territory's main north-south route as it expanded the ground operations which resumed on Wednesday.

- Projectiles from Gaza -

Israel's military said it intercepted two projectiles fired from northern Gaza on Friday after air raid sirens sounded in the southern city of Ashkelon.

On Thursday, sirens went off in central Israel as Hamas said it fired rockets at Tel Aviv in its first military response to Israel's resumed offensive. The military said it intercepted one rocket, while two hit an uninhabited area.

"We will intensify the fight with aerial, naval and ground shelling as well as by expanding the ground operation until hostages are freed and Hamas is defeated, using all military and civilian pressure points," Katz said.

He said these included implementing Trump's proposal for the United States to redevelop Gaza as a Mediterranean resort after the relocation of its Palestinian inhabitants to other Arab countries.

When asked if Trump was trying to get a Gaza ceasefire back on track Thursday, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters that the president "fully supports" Israel's renewed Gaza operations.

Israel rejected negotiations for a promised second stage of the truce, calling instead for the return of all of its remaining hostages under an extended first stage.

That would have meant delaying talks on a lasting ceasefire, and was rejected by Hamas as an attempt to renegotiate the original deal.

Case Against ChatGPT Over False "Horror Story" About Norwegian Man

OpenAI is facing a complaint about its chatbot making up a "horror story", by falsely describing a Norwegian man as having murdered his children, a privacy campaign group said on Thursday.

The US tech giant has faced a series of complaints that its ChatGPT gives false information, which can damage people's reputations.

"OpenAI's highly popular chatbot, ChatGPT, regularly gives false information about people without offering any way to correct it," Vienna-based Noyb ("None of Your Business") said in a press release.

It added ChatGPT has "falsely accused people of corruption, child abuse -- or even murder", as was the case with Norwegian user Arve Hjalmar Holmen.

Hjalmar Holmen "was confronted with a made-up horror story" when he wanted to find out if ChatGPT had any information about him, Noyb said.

The chatbot presented him as a convicted criminal who murdered two of his children and attempted to murder his third son.

"To make matters worse, the fake story included real elements of his personal life," Noyb said.

"Some think that 'there is no smoke without fire'. The fact that someone could read this output and believe it is true is what scares me the most," Hjalmar Holmen was quoted as saying.

In its complaint filed with the Norwegian Data Protection Authority (Datatilsynet), Noyb wants the agency to order OpenAI "to delete the defamatory output and fine-tune its model to eliminate inaccurate results", as well as impose a fine.

Noyb data protection lawyer Joakim Soederberg said the EU's data protection rules stipulate that personal data has to be accurate.

"And if it's not, users have the right to have it changed to reflect the truth," he said, adding that showing ChatGPT users a "tiny" disclaimer that the chatbot can make mistakes "clearly isn't enough".

Due to an update, ChatGPT now also searches the internet for information and Hjalmar Holmen is no longer identified as a murderer, Noyb said.

But the false information still remains in the system, Noyb added.

OpenAI did not immediately return an AFP request for comment.

Noyb already filed a complaint against ChatGPT last year in Austria, claiming the "hallucinating" flagship AI tool has invented wrong answers that OpenAI cannot correct.

Trump To Sign Order To Dismantle US Education Department

US President Donald Trump will sign an order Thursday to start dismantling the Department of Education, fulfilling an election campaign pledge and a long-held dream of American conservatives.

The Republican will issue the order during a White House ceremony -- one of the most drastic steps yet in the brutal overhaul of the government that he is carrying out with the help of tech tycoon Elon Musk.

Trump has cast the move as necessary to save money and improve educational standards in the United States, saying they are lagging behind those in Europe and China.

But education has been a battleground for decades in America's culture wars, and Republicans have long wanted to remove control of it from the federal government.

"He is saving America's children with this action," White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told Fox News ahead of the signing at 4:00 pm (2000 GMT).

"The Department of Education has never educated a child. All it has ever done is stolen money from the taxpayers."

His order on Thursday directs Education Secretary Linda McMahon to "take all necessary steps to facilitate the closure of the Department of Education and return education authority to the States," according to a draft obtained by AFP.

Trump promised on the campaign trail to get rid of the department and devolve its powers to US states, in much the same way that has happened with abortion rights.

Trump's appointment of McMahon, the former CEO of World Wrestling Entertainment, to lead the department was widely seen as a sign that its days were numbered.

Several Republican governors are expected to attend the signing ceremony.

- 'Final mission' -

By law, the Education Department -- created in 1979 -- cannot be shuttered without the approval of Congress, and Republicans do not have the votes to push that through.

But Trump and his billionaire advisor Elon Musk have already dismantled several other agencies, effectively crippling them by slashing programs and employees.

Educators and Democrats have slammed the move.

"Education is our country's future. Mr President, we will see you in court," Randi Weingarten, head of the American Federation of Teachers, said on X.

Tina Smith, the Democratic senator for Minnesota, said in a post aimed at Trump: "You can't shut down the Department of Education -- and you know it."

But the Heritage Foundation -- the right-wing think-tank that has seen many of its "Project 2025" recommendations adopted by Trump, welcomed the signing.

"It's a beautiful day to dismantle the Department of Education," it said on X.

Efforts were already underway to drastically downsize the department.

McMahon issued a memo shortly after her swearing in on March 3 saying the agency would be beginning its "final mission." The next week, she moved to halve the department's staff.

Traditionally, the federal government has had a limited role in education in the United States, with only about 13 percent of funding for primary and secondary schools coming from federal coffers, the rest being funded by states and local communities.

But federal funding is invaluable for low-income schools and students with special needs. And the federal government has been essential in enforcing key civil rights protections for students.

Several key programs are to be spared, such as those providing grants to university students and funding for low-income schools across the country, US media reported.

Trump's radical crackdown on the government is being spearheaded by Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), whose rapid actions have met pushback in courts for possibly exceeding executive authority.

A similar move to dismantle the US Agency for International Development was halted on Monday by a federal judge, who said the push likely violated the Constitution.

Shops To Be Allowed To Remain Open 24 Hours In Assam's Guwahati: Himanta Sarma

The Assam government on Thursday decided that all shops and business establishments will be allowed to remain open 24 hours in Guwahati, Dibrugarh and Silchar, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

Addressing a press conference here after a cabinet meeting, CM Sarma said his council of ministers approved a policy allowing shops and business establishments, except liquor outlets, to operate 24 hours a day in the capital city and the two important towns of the state.

"In other towns, all shops will be allowed to remain open till 2 am, while the limit will be 11 pm in rural areas. However, the workers will work for a maximum of nine hours. So, there has to be three shifts if anyone wants to operate 24 hours," he added.

This decision to allow shops to operate 24 hours will help small businesses and eventually lead to the generation of more jobs due to an increased number of shifts, CM Sarma stressed.

The CM also said, "The Moran community people, who live in Arunachal Pradesh, will get permanent residency certificates from the Assam government if they apply. Presently, the Arunachal government is not providing it to them." Recently, a delegation of the Moran community submitted a memorandum highlighting their problems due to the absence of a PRC, he added.

CM Sarma said the cabinet has approved Rs 262 crore for the construction of roads in tea garden areas.

"The state government will observe the birth centenary of ex-chief minister Golap Borbora who was the first non-Congress chief minister of Assam," CM Sarma stated.

The cabinet also abolished the age limit for National Health Mission employees for applying for permanent jobs in the Health Department, he added.

The government also decided to create the post of headmaster in elementary schools with 50 or more students, CM Sarma said.

Rushikonda Project Symbolises Growth, Not Extravagance: Senior YSRCP Leader

Senior YSRCP leader G Amarnath on Thursday said the Rushikonda project was a crucial step in enhancing Visakhapatnam's infrastructure.

He was referring to the controversial palatial mansion built on Rushikonda Hill in Vizag, which replaced tourism villas during the previous YSRCP regime.

Dismissing allegations against the project, G Amarnath stated that the accusations were "politically motivated and misleading".

"The project secured all necessary clearances, occupies only three per cent of the land, includes significant replanting efforts consistent with the site's historical use since the 1980s, and stands as a symbol of sustainable growth, not extravagance," he said in a press release.

G Amarnath dismissed claims that former CM Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy planned to use the Rushikonda project as a "personal residence" stating that they were "completely false".

He added that Mr Reddy never lived there and that the facility was intended for public and government use.

He further stated that the project cost Rs 230 crore, not Rs 500 crore as alleged, and occupied only three per cent of its 61-acre site, with the remaining area developed with roads, drainage, and extensive greenery.

According to him, Rushikonda had been under development since the 1980s, "with outdated structures being replaced." He asserted that the project, which includes a five-star hotel and a conference hall, was approved by multiple authorities and was scaled down from seven to four blocks after judicial review.

G Amarnath further emphasised that the project aligns with YSRCP's three-capital policy, strengthening Visakhapatnam as the executive capital.

Infiltration Attempts Go Up In J&K, Agencies Crackdown On Overground Workers

A surge in infiltration attempts by heavily armed terrorists along the International Border in Jammu sector has become a major cause of concern for New Delhi, prompting a crackdown on overground workers aiding them.

Agencies operating in Jammu and Kashmir say that more than four dozen terrorists have managed to sneak into India and set up their bases in the upper reaches of the Pir Panjal range over the past year.

Inputs shared among intelligence agencies suggest that the number of foreign terrorists affiliated with Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed has gone up by five times compared to local terrorists.

Figures from the Ministry of Home Affairs reveal that around 120 terrorists are active in J&K, of which only about 20 are locals and the rest are foreign-trained terrorists who have snuck in.

Last month, a heavily armed group of terrorists had opened fire at a Jammu and Kashmir Rifles patrol vehicle in the Sunderbani area of Rajouri district. An investigation has revealed that a group of terrorists that had freshly infiltrated into J&K was responsible for the attack. The group is still being tracked.

Inputs being shared by various agencies with the local police indicate that infiltration attempts will rise in the coming months and this issue was discussed during a review meeting chaired by Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan earlier this month. Mr Mohan, who was on his first visit to Jammu, was tasked by Home Minister Amit Shah with reviewing the ongoing audit being done by forces that guard the border in the region.

Following the review, the National Investigating Agency (NIA) conducted raids on Wednesday in 12 locations in Jammu, including the premises of alleged terrorist sympathisers.

"Among the premises which were raided include the homes of overground workers (OGWs) linked to the newly-formed offshoots and affiliates of banned terrorist organisations such as Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM)," the NIA said in a statement.

The agency said it was acting on information regarding the infiltration of LeT and JeM terrorists into India through the International Border and Line of Control. Intel reports suggested that the infiltration was facilitated by OGWs and terror associates living in border areas.

Besides providing logistical support, food, shelter and money, the suspects were involved in guiding the terrorists through the difficult terrain of Jammu province to ensure their safe passage, the NIA said.

The terrorists were then believed to have made their way to the hinterland districts of Kathua, Udhampur, Doda, Kishtwar, Reasi, Rajouri, Poonch, and also to the Kashmir valley, it added.

"Prisoner Exchange Will Be...": Kremlin's Full Statement On Trump-Putin Call

US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin spoke for over two hours during a phone-call, discussing ways to end the ongoing war in Ukraine and ways to establish "lasting peace".

Kremlin's Full Statement On Trump-Putin Call

The leaders continued a detailed and frank exchange of views on the situation around Ukraine. Vladimir Putin expressed gratitude to Donald Trump for his desire to help achieve the noble goal of ending hostilities and human losses.

Having confirmed his fundamental commitment to a peaceful resolution of the conflict, the Russian President declared his readiness to work together with his American partners to thoroughly explore possible ways of resolving the conflict, which should be comprehensive, sustainable and long-term. And, of course, to take into account the absolute need to eliminate the root causes of the crisis, and Russia's legitimate interests in the area of security.

In the context of the US President's initiative to introduce a 30-day ceasefire, the Russian side outlined a number of significant points concerning ensuring effective control over a possible ceasefire along the entire line of combat contact, the need to stop forced mobilization in Ukraine and rearm the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Serious risks associated with the inability to negotiate of the Kyiv regime, which has repeatedly sabotaged and violated the agreements reached, were also noted. Attention was drawn to the barbaric terrorist crimes committed by Ukrainian militants against the civilian population of the Kursk region.

It was emphasized that the key condition for preventing the escalation of the conflict and working towards its resolution through political and diplomatic means should be the complete cessation of foreign military aid and the provision of intelligence information to Kyiv.

In connection with Donald Trump's recent appeal to spare the lives of Ukrainian servicemen surrounded in the Kursk region, Vladimir Putin confirmed that the Russian side is ready to be guided by humanitarian considerations and, in the event of their surrender, guarantees the lives and decent treatment of the Ukrainian Armed Forces soldiers in accordance with Russian laws and international law.

During the conversation, Donald Trump put forward a proposal for the parties to the conflict to mutually refrain from attacks on energy infrastructure facilities for 30 days. Vladimir Putin responded positively to this initiative and immediately gave the Russian military the corresponding order.

The Russian President also responded constructively to Donald Trump's idea of implementing a well-known initiative concerning the safety of navigation in the Black Sea. It was agreed to begin negotiations to further elaborate specific details of such an agreement.

Vladimir Putin informed that on March 19, a prisoner exchange will be carried out between the Russian and Ukrainian sides - 175 for 175 people. In addition, as a gesture of goodwill, 23 seriously wounded Ukrainian servicemen who are being treated in Russian medical institutions will be transferred.

The leaders confirmed their intention to continue efforts to achieve a Ukrainian settlement in a bilateral mode, including taking into account the above-mentioned proposals of the US President. For this purpose, Russian and American expert groups are being created.

Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump also touched upon other issues on the international agenda, including the situation in the Middle East and the Red Sea region. Joint efforts will be made to stabilize the situation in crisis areas, establish cooperation on nuclear non-proliferation and global security. This, in turn, will contribute to improving the overall atmosphere of Russian-American relations. One positive example is the joint vote in the UN on the resolution on the Ukrainian conflict.

Mutual interest was expressed in normalizing bilateral relations in light of the special responsibility of Russia and the United States for ensuring security and stability in the world. In this context, a wide range of areas in which our countries could establish interaction was considered. A number of ideas were discussed that are moving towards the development of mutually beneficial cooperation in the economy and energy sector.

Donald Trump supported Vladimir Putin's idea to organize hockey matches in the USA and Russia between Russian and American players playing in the NHL and KHL.

The presidents agreed to remain in contact on all issues raised.

Karnataka BJP MLA Basangouda Patil Yatnal Charged For Vulgar Remarks On Ranya Rao

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Basangouda Patil Yatnal was on Tuesday charged for his vulgar remarks on actor Ranya Rao, who is currently in the custody of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence in a gold smuggling case.

The legislator from Karnataka's Bijapur City on Monday sparked a controversy through his remarks that the actor had hidden gold "all over her body". "There were lapses by customs officials, and necessary action should be taken against them. She (Ranya Rao) had gold all over her body, hiding it wherever she had holes, and smuggled it in," Mr Yatnal told reporters in Kannada.

The BJP MLA also hinted at the role of ministers in the crime. "I have gathered complete information about her relationships, who helped her obtain security (clearance), and how the gold was brought in. I will expose everything in the session...," he added.

Mr Yatnal the guilty must not be spared. "Can someone be defended because they are a central government employee," he asked.

Ramachandra Rao, a DGP-level officer who has denied any link to the gold seizure, was sent on "compulsory leave" last week, after his stepdaughter's arrest.

The actor was caught smuggling gold bars weighing 14.2 kg, worth Rs 14.56 crore, when she arrived from Dubai at the Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru on March 3.

Ranya Rao, who made her debut with the 2014 movie Maanikya, came under the radar of DRI officials after she made her fourth visit to Dubai in 15 days. It was earlier learnt that she made 27 trips to Dubai in the past year.

Sources said the actor used to wear some of the gold and conceal the rest in her clothing to avoid getting caught.

After arresting Ms Rao, investigators raided her house and recovered gold jewellery worth over Rs 2 crore and cash worth Rs 2.67 crore.

In a leaked statement, the actor has revealed the details of her international trips to locations such as the Middle East, Dubai and some Western countries. She has admitted that 17 gold bars were found on her.

Besides Ms Rao, two people have been taken into custody in the case - T Raj, who is believed to share close ties with her, and Tarun Kondaraju, another friend who was with her in Dubai, police said.

In a statement on March 5, Mr Rao said there has been no "black mark" on his career and that he was not in touch with his step daughter since she got married four months ago. He also said he was unaware of her and her husband Jatin Hukkeri's business dealings.

On Monday night, the four-month-old girl, Yasika, daughter of Tamil Nadu natives Muthu and Akkamal, went missing after which a search was conducted.

After a few hours, Yasika's body was fished out from a well in her house.

After several rounds of questioning, the minor accused, the daughter of Muthu's brother, confessed to the crime.

After Muthu's brother passed away last year, the 12-year-old girl has been staying with his family.

Since morning, the police have been questioning Muthu, his niece and Akammal after which the 12-year-old broke down.

Muthu and his wife used to make a living by picking up waste items and Muthu's niece used to look after Yasika when the couple went out for work.

During interrogation, the minor accused revealed that after the birth of Yasika, she felt that the love and affection of Muthu and Akammal had shifted to their newborn.

Yusuf, another neighbour said, "I could make out from her face that 12-year-old has committed the crime. Moreover, on Monday, the minor accused said when Yasika went missing, she was out to attend the nature's call. When the girl was asked how long she took to return, she said 10 minutes. After she quoted such a long time, I was sure that she committed the crime."

Indian Railways In Sound Financial Condition, Covid Losses Recovered: Ashwini Vaishnaw

Indian Railways' financials are in good condition with continuous improvement efforts underway, Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw informed the Rajya Sabha on Monday.

During a debate on the working of the Railways Ministry, Mr Vaishnaw noted that the national transporter has overcome Covid-related challenges and recovered the losses, with passengers returning to train travel and both passenger and cargo traffic showing growth.

During 2023-24, Indian Railways reported a revenue of approximately Rs 2.78 lakh crore against expenses of Rs 2.75 lakh crore. Major expenditure components include staff costs (Rs 1.16 lakh crore), pension payments (Rs 66,000 crore), energy expenses (Rs 32,000 crore), and financing costs (Rs 25,000 crore).

"Railways is fulfilling its expenses from its own income because of good performance. ...Overall, the financial condition is good and we are trying to improve it on constant basis," Mr Vaishnaw stated.

The minister highlighted that Railways subsidises passenger fares while generating revenue from cargo and freight operations.

While the actual cost per kilometer stands at Rs 1.38, passengers are charged only 73 paise, resulting in a total passenger subsidy of approximately Rs 57,000 crore for 2023-24.

Mr Vaishnaw emphasised that Indian train fares remain the lowest compared to neighbouring countries.

"If you look at a journey of 350 km, Rs 121 is the fare of general class in India, Rs 400 in Pakistan, Rs 413 in Sri Lanka. This is the same in almost all categories," he noted, adding that fares have remained unchanged since 2020.

In spite of the rise in fuel prices, wage costs due to implementation of Seventh Pay commission, we have not hiked the fares since 2020 and have tried to offset it with cargo income, he said.

"The financial condition of Railways is more or less recovered since the COVID-19 slump," Mr Vaishnaw said.

Energy costs have "stabilized" at Rs 30,000-32,000 crore, with the railways financially benefiting from electrification initiatives implemented after 2019.

The minister also outlined several achievements, including increased passenger and cargo traffic.

By March 31 this year, Indian Railways is projected to rank among the world's top three countries in cargo carrying capacity at 1.6 billion tonnes, behind only China and the United States.

Other notable accomplishments include replacement of about 50,000 km of tracks, construction of more than 12,000 underpasses and flyovers, rebuilding of 14,000 bridges, and manufacturing of 41,000 Linke-Hofmann-Busch coaches (LHC).

"In the third term, Integral Coach Factory (ICF) coaches will be replaced with LHC coaches," Mr Vaishnaw added.

The minister said that this year 1,400 locomotives are being produced in India, which is more than the combined production of America and Europe. This is a big achievement. Also, about 2 lakh new wagons have been added to the entire fleet of Indian Railways.

Indian railway passenger coaches are being sent to Mozambique, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, while locomotives are being exported to Mozambique, Senegal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Bangladesh.

Today, the under-frame of the bogie is being exported to the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, France, Australia and other countries. The important part of the power train, propulsion, is being exported to France, Mexico, Germany, Spain, Romania and Italy.

Mr Vaishnaw said there is a laser-sharp focus on railway safety. Many technical changes have been made. Longer rails, electronic interlocking, level-crossing gates, fog safety devices and 'Kavach' are being rolled out rapidly. Now more work is being done than ever before and the results of which are visible.

In 2025, the railway will also achieve Scope 1 Net Zero. The target of Scope 2 is by 2030, he said, adding that the amount of carbon dioxide emitted and the work done by the railway to benefit the environment will be completely offset.
