Pharmacist Kills Wife With Help Of 2 Girlfriends In Bhubaneswar: Police

A 24-year-old pharmacist along with his two girlfriends allegedly killed his wife by forceful anaesthesia in Bhubaneswar, police said on Wednesday.

The incident happened on October 28, but came to light only after the post-mortem examination revealed foul play, they said.

Pradmunya Kumar, the pharmacist, and his two girlfriends -- Roji Patra and Ejita Bhuyan, both nurses -- have been arrested, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Pinak Mishra said.

Pradmunya married Subhashree in 2020 after dating for years, and since then he has been torturing her. For the last six months, Subhashree had been living with her parents in Khurda as a result, police said.

Amid his problems with Subhashree, Pradyumna met Ejita last year and got close to her. He met Roji in March this year, and the three got along well.

They allegedly conspired to kill Subhashree and at about 2 pm on October 27, Pradyumna brought his wife to Roji's house in Sampur area where she was overdosed with drugs meant for anaesthesia, police said.

An unconscious Subhashree was taken to the Capital Hospital on October 28 where Pradyumna told doctors that she tried to die by suicide. She was eventually declared brought dead.

The post-mortem examination revealed high dose of anaesthesia drugs was the reason behind her death, which prompted the police to further investigate the case, Mr Mishra said.

"After discussing with the medical officer, who conducted the post-mortem examination, we got the clue that it was not just an unnatural death and there was some foul play involved. We interrogated the accused, who confessed that they had forcefully injected anaesthesia drugs into the deceased," he said.

A special team has been formed to conduct a detailed investigation into the sensational case, the DCP said.

"If required, we will take the prime accused on remand and recreate the crime scene," he said.

Eknath Shinde Fields MP Milind Deora Against Aaditya Thackeray In Worli

The Shiv Sena led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Sunday nominated Rajya Sabha member Milind Deora against ex-CM Uddhav Thackeray's son and Shiv Sena (UBT) nominee Aaditya Thackeray from Mumbai's Worli in the upcoming assembly polls.

Mr Deora, a former Congress leader and Union minister of state, joined the Sena before the Lok Sabha polls this year and was subsequently elected to the Rajya Sabha.

Mr Shinde's decision to pit Mr Deora against incumbent MLA and former state minister Aaditya Thackeray will make Worli a high-voltage contest.

The Shiv Sena on Sunday announced its candidates for 20 seats.

It also fielded BJP Lok Sabha member Narayan Rane's son Nilesh Rane from the Kudal constituency. His younger brother and sitting MLA Nitesh Rane has been renominated by the BJP from Kankavali in Sindhudurg district.

The party has picked Member of Legislative Council and former MP Bhawana Gawali from Risod in Washim district, while another MLC, Amshya Padvi, will contest on a Sena ticket from the Akkalkuva constituency in Dhule district.

Former Lok Sabha member Sanjay Nirupam will contest from Dindoshi seat in Mumbai. Sena has also nominated former BJP leader Murji Patel for the Andheri East seat in the state capital.

BJP ex-MP Rajendra Gavit, who joined the Sena in 2019 and won the Palghar Lok Sabha seat then, has been fielded from the Palghar assembly constituency.

Elections to the 288-member Maharashtra assembly will be held on November 20 and votes will be counted on November 23.

"Unleash CBI After Us": Prashant Kishor After Minister's Bribing Charge

Jan Suraaj founder Prashant Kishor on Saturday lashed out at Union minister Jitan Ram Manjhi for charging the newly formed political party with bribing voters in by-elections to four assembly seats of Bihar.

Mr Manjhi, who is also a former Chief Minister of Bihar, had made the allegation on Friday evening, at a rally in Imamganj which has fallen vacant upon his election to Lok Sabha and from where his daughter-in-law Deepa is trying her luck as the candidate of his Hindustani Awam Morcha.

"The Jan Suraaj people are making people sign forms pledging support for the party in the by-polls. The voters have been promised cash reward of Rs one lakh each in the event of Jan Suraaj candidate's victory", Mr Manjhi had said.

When asked about the charge, Prashant Kishor, who was on the campaign trail in Tarari, shot back "Does Manjhi realise what he is saying? In almost every assembly segment, there are about two lakh voters. If we are promising to give Rs one lakh to each of them, you can do the math and figure out the total sum involved".

Prashant Kishor added "if Manjhi is convinced that we are sitting on such a huge pile of money, then, being a Union minister, he should get the ED and the CBI unleashed after us. He should also draw the attention of the Election Commission".

The political strategist turned activist claimed the 80 years old had suffered "a loss of mental balance" on account of the realisation that "the real fight in Imamganj is between RJD and Jan Suraaj".

"For Manjhi, politics has been all about his family. But in the very constituency which he believes to be his stronghold, his own daughter-in-law is struggling to be one of the main contenders", claimed Prashant Kishor.

The IPAC founder, who claims to have given up on political consultancy for good, floated the new party earlier this month, vowing to win the Bihar assembly polls next year on its own steam.

The party is also contesting the by-polls to all four assembly seats - Imamganj, Tarari, Belaganj and Ramgarh - which have been necessitated by election of respective MLAs to Lok Sabha.

"In A Society Governed By Dharma, There's No Room For Inequities": Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar

Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Saturday said dharma is the most fundamental concept of Indian culture, guiding all aspects of life and that inequities have no place in a society governed by dharma.

Dharma represents both the path, the passage as also the destination and the goal, applying to all spheres of existence including divine beings and serves as a practical rather than utopian ideal for righteous living, he said.

"Sanatana stands for empathy, sympathy, compassion, tolerance, non-violence, virtuosity, sublimity, religiosity and all these converge in one word, inclusivity," he added.

Addressing the gathering at the 'Namah Shivaya' Parayan organised by Sringeri Sri Sharada Peetham as part of their Suvarna Bharati Mahotsava here, Mr Dhankhar described "Mantra Cosmopolis" as a rare and spectacular event that resonates deeply, engaging the mind, heart, and soul, with everyone in harmony.

He emphasised that Vedic chanting, one of humanity's most ancient and continuous oral traditions, serves as a living link to our ancestor's profound spiritual wisdom. The precise rhythms, intonations, and vibrations of these sacred mantras create a powerful resonance that brings mental peace and environmental harmony.

"The systematic structure of Vedic verses and the intricate recitation rules reflect the scientific sophistication of ancient scholars. This tradition, preserved without written records, demonstrates the remarkable capacity of Indian culture to transmit knowledge orally across generations, with each syllable meticulously articulated in mathematical harmony," he stated.

He emphasised that Indian culture's defining feature is its unity in diversity, created through the blending of various traditions over time. This journey has instilled values of humility and non-violence. India stands unparalleled in its inclusiveness, representing all of humanity with a sense of unity.

"The divine essence of Indian culture lies in its universal compassion, encapsulated in the philosophy of "VasudhaivaKutumbakam," he said.

Referring to attempts made by "bigotry minds" in the past, the Vice-President said, "All kinds of efforts were made to run down our culture, taint and tarnish our heritage and destroy our moral fabric by some bigoted minds. The nation has survived because our culture is indestructible."

Recognising Adi Shankaracharya's role in unifying and strengthening Indian culture through his easily comprehensible teachings, Mr Dhankhar said, "We owe a great debt to Adi Shankaracharya Ji for revival of timeless traditions of Indian spirituality and philosophy." Noting that pursuit of wealth should not be reckless or self-centered, he said if creation of wealth is harmonised with human welfare, it purifies the conscience and gives happiness.

He also stressed that business ethics must be aligned with spiritual principles, keeping in mind that Dharma is wedded to fairness to all, equitable behaviour to all, equality for all.

"In a society governed by dharma, there is no room for inequities," he added.

Nvidia Overtakes Apple As World's Most Valuable Company

Nvidia dethroned Apple as the world's most valuable company on Friday, following a record-setting rally in the stock powered by an insatiable demand for its new supercomputing AI chips.

Nvidia's stock market value briefly touched $3.53 trillion, while that of Apple was $3.52 trillion, according to data from LSEG.

In June, Nvidia briefly became the world's most valuable company, before it was overtaken by Microsoft and Apple. The tech trio's market capitalizations have been neck-and-neck for several months. Microsoft's market value stood at $3.20 trillion.

Nvidia's stock has risen about 18% so far in October, with a string of gains coming after OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, announced a funding round of $6.6 billion. Nvidia provides chips used to train so-called foundation models such as OpenAI's GPT-4.

"More companies are now embracing artificial intelligence in their everyday tasks and demand remains strong for Nvidia chips," said Russ Mould, investment director at AJ Bell.

"It is certainly in a sweet spot and so long as we avoid a big economic downturn in the United States, there is a feeling that companies will continue to invest heavily in AI capabilities, creating a healthy tailwind for Nvidia."

Nvidia's shares hit a record high on Tuesday, building on a rally from last week when TSMC, the world's largest contract chipmaker, posted a forecast-beating 54% jump in quarterly profit driven by soaring demand for chips used in AI.

The next big test will be when Nvidia reports third-quarter results in November. Nvidia in August forecast third-quarter revenue of $32.5 billion, plus or minus 2%, compared with the current average analyst expectation of $32.90 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG.

Morgan Stanley analyst Joseph Moore said in a note dated Oct. 10 that he remains "very bullish" about the company longer term, but the recent rally "raises the bar for earnings somewhat".

After a meeting with Nvidia's CEO Jensen Huang, Moore noted the ramp up in production of its next-generation Blackwell chips appeared to be "quite strong" and are booked out for 12 months. The stock came under pressure in August after Nvidia confirmed reports that the production of Blackwell chips was delayed until the fourth quarter.

Shares of Nvidia, Apple and Microsoft have an outsized influence on the richly valued technology sector as well as the broader U.S. stock market, with the trio accounting for about a fifth of the S&P 500 index's weightage.

Frenzy around the prospects of AI, expectations that the U.S. Federal Reserve will considerably bring down interest rates, and most recently, an upbeat start to the earnings season, have pushed the benchmark S&P 500 to an all-time high last week.

Nvidia's massive gains have helped boost the stock's appeal for option traders and the company's options are among the most traded on any given day in recent months, according to data from options analytics provider Trade Alert.

The stock has surged nearly 190% so far this year as a boom in generative AI prompted the company to issue a series of blowout forecasts.

"The question is whether the revenue stream will last for a long time and will be driven by the emotion of investors rather than by any ability to prove or disprove the thesis that AI is overdone," said Rick Meckler, partner at Cherry Lane Investments, a family investment office in New Vernon, New Jersey.

"I think Nvidia knows that near term, their numbers are likely to be quite remarkable."

Pay Up If You Want To See Notre-Dame, French Minister Wants To Tell Tourists

France should charge visitors a small fee to see the Notre-Dame cathedral to help the country keep its world-famous churches and cathedrals in shape, the culture minister said.

Rachida Dati told newspaper Le Figaro in an interview published late on Wednesday that by charging only 5 euros per visitor Notre-Dame could raise 75 million euros ($81 million) a year.

In France, where secularism is part of the national identity, the state is in charge of maintaining the country's religious sites, including 15,000 classified as historic monuments, which are usually free of charge.

Notre-Dame has been undergoing reconstruction after a fire severely damaged its roof and spire. President Emmanuel Macron had pledged to rebuild Notre-Dame within five years, drawing massive private-sector financial support.

Dati, a former Paris district mayor, also said tourists from outside the European Union should pay more to visit non-religious landmarks.

"Is it normal that a French visitor pays the same entrance fee to the Louvre as a Brazilian or Chinese visitor?", Dati said, adding:

"I want visitors from outside the EU to pay more for their entrance ticket and for this supplement to go towards financing the renovation of our national heritage."

The minister said many of the country's famous buildings attracting millions of tourists per year were in a degraded state and that new funding sources were needed to address mounting preservation challenges, especially in the capital.

She said the ministry was working on implementing a new pricing policy, which is likely to require coordination with various public and private entities, from January 2026.

"A country that gives up on carrying out major cultural projects gives up on being a great nation," Dati said.

"Could Make Countries Vulnerable To Coercion": US On China's AI Use

The US government is concerned about China's use of artificial intelligence to repress its population, spread misinformation and undermine the security of the United States and its allies, White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan said on Thursday.

Sullivan told an event at the National Defense University that a new US directive on AI was intended in part to help address those concerns, and to help offer alternatives to developing economies and other partners around the world.

"We know that China is building its own technological ecosystem with digital infrastructure that won't protect sensitive data, that can enable mass surveillance and censorship, that can spread misinformation and that can make countries vulnerable to coercion," he said.

Archaeology Body Explains Stand On Jama Masjid As Protected Monument

The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) on Wednesday told the Delhi High Court that declaring the historic Jama Masjid a "protected monument" would have a "substantial Impact" and no steps have been taken in this regard so far.

In an affidavit filed in response to PILs on the issue, the ASI said once a monument is declared a protected monument, certain regulations and prohibitions in the area around it come into force.

It further said that although the Mughal-era Jama Masjid is currently under the protection and guardianship of the Delhi Waqf Board, the ASI has been undertaking conservation and preservation work there.

A bench headed by Justice Prathiba M Singh orally said it was not inclined to declare Jama Masjid a "protected monument" in view of the stand of the ASI and ordered the petitioners to file their notes with respect to the steps that should be taken for the protection of the historic structure.

"They (ASI) are saying there is a hesitation. There is an impact of declaring it a protected monument," the court observed while dealing with PILs seeking directions to authorities to declare the Jama Masjid a protected monument and remove all encroachments in and around it.

The bench, also comprising Justice Amit Sharma, nonetheless added that it would look into the issue of streamlining the administration of the mosque and asked the Delhi Waqf Board to inform it about the status of the 9-member managing committee that was earlier appointed for the Jama Masjid.

"One thing is clear, even if it is not treated as a protected monument, its revenue cannot exclusively go to any private individual," the court said, while suggesting that some reimbursement could be given to ASI for the preservation work undertaken by it.

The ASI, represented by central government standing counsel Manish Mohan, stated in its affidavit that it has spent over 60 lakh on the conservation works carried out at the Jama Masjid since 2007.

The affidavit by ASI further said that since the Jama Masjid was not a "protected monument", it had no information about the generation and utilisation of its revenue.

"There is a substantial impact of declaring Jama Masjid as a protected monument. The provision of prohibited area will be applicable to the Jama Masjid, which is a 100-metre zone from a protected monument in which new construction is prohibited. Further, in regulated areas (200 metre zone beyond prohibited area) all construction-related activities are regulated and require prior permission from the Competent Authority and National Monuments Authority," the document said.

The authorities, also represented by the Centre's standing counsel Anil Soni, also said the "original file", containing the decision of the then prime minister Manmohan Singh that the Jama Masjid should not be declared a protected monument, could not be traced.

The court had sought production of the file before it on August 28.

During the hearing, senior advocate DP Singh, appearing for one of the petitioners, raised concerns with respect to the utilisation of the revenue generated by the Jama Masjid.

He said the Jama Masjid in Pakistan is a world heritage site.

Another petitioner objected to the use of the title "Shahi Imam" by the religious head in the Jama Masjid.

The bench, however, said it was not concerned with the title but actual benefit to the people.

"This happens in a lot of temples also. We are not concerned with the title but the actual benefit to the people," it said.

Listing the matter for hearing in December, the court said the Centre was free to place on record its views with respect to the streamlining of the revenue utilisation as well as the managing committee appointed by the Waqf board.

It also asked the ASI to carry out a survey of the mosque and place it a sketch along with photographs of its premises.

The PILs, filed by Suhail Ahmed Khan and Ajay Gautam in 2014, have objected to the use of the title 'Shahi Imam' by Jama Masjid's Imam Maulana Syed Ahmed Bukhari and the appointment of his son as the Naib (deputy) Imam.   The pleas have also questioned why Jama Masjid was not under the ASI.

The ASI had in August 2015 told the court that former prime minister Singh had assured the Shahi Imam that the Jama Masjid would not be declared a protected monument.

Russia Hosts 16th BRICS Summit: What Is It? History, Members...

Russian President Vladimir Putin is hosting the 16th BRICS Summit this week in Kazan and meeting with over 20 heads of state, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. The Kremlin described the gathering as one of the largest foreign policy events ever held in Russia, adding attempts to isolate the country on the global stage had failed.

PM Modi on Tuesday met Mr Putin on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit. The Prime Minister will meet Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday, following the breakthrough in negotiations for patrolling points along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

What is BRICS?

BRICS is an association of five major emerging national economies - Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. The BRICS nations are characterised by their large, rapidly growing economies, significant influence on regional and global affairs, diverse economies with complementary strengths and emerging markets with increasing global significance. Established to improve cooperation and collaboration among its members, BRICS focuses on promoting peace, security and development in a multipolar world.

BRICS: History

The concept of BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China) was first introduced in 2001 by Jim O'Neill, former Chief Economist of Goldman Sachs. He argued these four emerging economies would play a significant role in global economic growth over the coming decades. The BRIC nations held their first formal summit in Yekaterinburg, Russia, in June 2009.

South Africa joined in 2010, expanding the group to BRICS.

BRICS: Members

For a long time, BRICS comprised the five original members - Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

At the 2023 BRICS summit, six nations - Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the UAE - were invited to join the alliance. While all accepted the invitation, Argentina later withdrew, with newly elected President Javier Milei choosing a pro-Western stance and saying that Argentina would not "ally with communists." Saudi Arabia confirmed its intention to join but has delayed its official membership, with no further explanations.

Why Expansion

The expansion of BRICS initially sparked discussions within the group. China and Russia were keen on adding new members, while Brazil and India were more cautious, worried it would dilute their influence.

Egypt and Ethiopia joined to amplify African voices and attract investment. Saudi Arabia and the UAE, major oil producers and key US allies, brought significant economic weight.

The new members also raised questions about their relations with the West. Iran and Russia opposed US influence, while China competed with the United States.

BRICS: Statistics

BRICS nations account for 45 per cent of the global population (3.2 billion people) and 28 per cent of the global economy ($28.5 trillion), reports BBC. They also represent 16 per cent of global trade.

The gathering marks the first BRICS Summit since the group's expansion in Johannesburg last year.

NDTV World Summit 2024: Why Switch To Electric Vehicles 'Makes Sense'? Charge Zone CEO Kartikey Hariyani Explains

Kartikey Hariyani, the founder and CEO of Electric vehicle (EV) charging network Charge Zone, while speaking at NDTV World Summit 2024, explained why switching to EV makes Sense.

"In India, the purpose of an EV or a car is for personal mobility. 80 percent of the mobility requirement of an Indian consumer is less than 51 k a day. So, with this stat, EV becomes a natural choice for adoption but it also (poses) a question whether the cost makes sense. Then as an individual consumer, you will say I don't need an EV or the payback is not really attractive," he said.

Mr Hariyani, however, insisted that "there is good news around".

"Two developments have happened in the industry so far. In the last two quarters, the cost of the battery has come down by half. The second good news is some of the OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) have initiated battery as a service which means battery and charging will effectively becomes your fuelling system. So, what you are going to buy will be a car without the battery cost, it means (it would be) equivalent to the cost of a petrol car," he said.

Mr Hariyani stressed that one has to think through carefully in terms of how the recharging networks will be planned.

"For each of the EV segments, the industry players have started investing into this. Six years ago, standards got built into this. Later on, local ecosystem played a big part. Localisation did happen in terms of semiconductors as well as power electronics. Today we are ready with the chargers, localised both for three wheelers and four wheelers," he said.

He also said that even though fast-charging is a key for adoption of EVs but it's not just about cars but also buses and trucks.

"For a charging company like us, when we started off in 2019, there were green sprouts around electric cars coming into the market, then electric buses started coming. And today we see the launch of electric trucks. As a priority, I will enable inter-city mobility. In other words, charging infra on highways is our priority number one. We have electrified 33,000 kms of highways in India. Fast-charging is a cornerstone. But, if I invest into fast-charging only for cars, I won't be able to make money even in my whole life time. Inter-city buses and inter-city trucks are going to be the biggest enablers," he added.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasised the importance of clean energy for a better future, stating that "clean energy is the need of the hour".

At COP26, India committed to reducing projected carbon emissions by 1 billion tonnes by 2030 and achieving net-zero emissions by 2070. These commitments necessitate a rapid transition to renewables.

Elon Musk's Daily $1 Million Payouts At Trump Rally Draw Legal Scrutiny

Billionaire Elon Musk promised on Saturday to give away $1 million each day until November's election to someone who signs his online petition, with the first prize awarded at a PAC event supporting Republican Donald Trump, raising questions about the legality of the payments.

Musk gave a $1 million check to an attendee of his America PAC event in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, aimed at rallying supporters behind presidential candidate Trump. The winner was a man named John Dreher, according to event staff.

"By the way, John had no idea. So anyway, you're welcome," the Tesla founder said as he handed Dreher the check.

The money is the latest example of Musk using his extraordinary wealth to influence the tightly-contested presidential race between Trump and his Democratic rival Vice President Kamala Harris.

Musk started America PAC, a political action organization he founded in support of Trump's presidential campaign. The group is helping mobilize and register voters in battleground states, but there are signs it is having trouble meeting its goals.

'DEEPLY CONCERNING'

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro said on Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press" that Musk's plan to give money to registered voters in Pennsylvania is "deeply concerning" and "it's something that law enforcement could take a look at."

Questions about the legality of these cash payments abounded on Saturday night, as election law experts pointed to various provisions in federal law that prohibited making cash payments to voters.

It is a federal crime to pay people with the intention of inducing or rewarding them to cast a vote or to get registered, an offense punishable by prison time. The prohibition covers not only monetary expenditures, but also anything of monetary value like liquor or lottery chances, a Justice Department election-crimes manual says.

The Harrisburg event was the third in as many days in Pennsylvania, where Musk is painting November's election in stark terms and encouraging supporters to vote early and get others to do the same.

He said on Saturday that if Harris wins, it will be "the last election."

He also said the two assassination attempts against Trump prove he is ruffling feathers and upending the status quo.

The petition Musk is asking people to sign reads: "The First and Second Amendments guarantee freedom of speech and the right to bear arms. By signing below, I am pledging my support for the First and Second Amendments."

Attendees of Saturday's event had to sign the petition, which allows America PAC to garner contact details for more potential voters that it can work to get to the polls for Trump.

Musk, ranked by Forbes as the world's richest person, so far has supplied at least $75 million to America PAC, according to federal disclosures, making the group a crucial part of Trump's bid to regain the White House.

The entrepreneur behind carmaker Tesla and rocket and satellite venture SpaceX has increasingly supported Republican causes and this year became an outspoken Trump supporter.

Trump in turn has said if elected he would appoint Musk to head a government efficiency commission.

The incident occurred near Badvel town of Kadapa district. Accused Vignesh and the victim had been friends since childhood.

According to police, the accused had recently married another girl but wanted to maintain a relationship with her too. On Saturday, he called her and wanted to meet her. He told her that if she did not meet him, he would end his life. The victim agreed to meet and boarded an autorickshaw from her college. After she travelled some distance, Vignesh also joined her.

They reached a place near Century Plywood factory, about 10 km from Budvel. It was not known what transpired between the two but after some time the accused poured petrol on her and set her afire.

Hearing her cries, farmers working in the nearby fields rushed to her rescue and doused the fire while the accused fled from there. The locals informed the police, who admitted the victim to a hospital in Badvel. Later, she was shifted to Kadapa and admitted to the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Science (RIMS).

The victim suffered 80 per cent burn injuries and was battling for her life. The district judge recorded her statement at RIMS.

Kadapa Superintendent of Police Harshvardhan said four teams have been constituted to nab the accused. He said preliminary investigations revealed that both the girl and youth were residents of the same area in Badvel town and had known each other since childhood.

Meanwhile, taking serious note of the incident, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu directed police officials to immediately arrest the accused. He spoke to officials over the phone and enquired about the girl's condition. He asked them to ensure the best possible treatment for the victim.

Senior ISIS Leader, 3 Others Killed In Iraqi Strike: US Military

Iraqi air strikes killed a senior Islamic State group leader and three other terrorists, the US military announced Friday, saying the strikes were enabled by intelligence from the international anti-jihadist coalition.

"Iraqi security forces (ISF) conducted precision airstrikes in northeastern Iraq on October 14 that killed four members of the terrorist organization ISIS, including a senior leader," the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a statement on social media, using an acronym for the Islamic State group.

"The Iraqi-led strikes were conducted to disrupt and degrade ISIS attack networks in Iraq and were enabled by technical support and intelligence from coalition forces," CENTCOM said.

It said the leader who got killed was the group's most senior official in northern Iraq, identifying him as Shahadhah Allawi Salih Ulaywi al-Bajjari and saying he was also known as Abu Issa.

Iraq's Joint Operations Command had previously said in a statement that F-16 warplanes carried out strikes on October 14 in Kirkuk province that killed four terrorists, "one of them an important leader."

The strikes came after US and Iraqi forces conducted a joint operation in late August that CENTCOM said killed 14 Islamic State group members, among them four leaders.

The United States has about 2,500 troops in Iraq and 900 in Syria as part of the coalition, which Washington and Baghdad announced last month will end its decade-long military mission in Iraq within a year.

The announcement followed months of talks between the United States and Iraq on the future of the coalition, which was established in 2014 to help local forces retake swathes of territory seized by the jihadists there and in neighboring Syria.

The coalition will continue its military operation in Syria, with international troops permitted to support anti-jihadist operations there from Iraq until September 2026.

IS was defeated in Iraq in 2017 and in Syria in 2019, but jihadist fighters continue to operate in remote desert areas although they no longer control territory.

CBI Files Chargesheet Congress MP, Others In Chinese Workers' Visa Corruption Case

The CBI has filed a charge sheet against Congress MP Karti Chidambaram and others in connection with alleged bribery in facilitating visas of Chinese nationals for a power company in 2011 when his father P Chidambaram was the Union home minister, officials said on Thursday.

In its charge sheet submitted before a special court here, the CBI has named Karti Chidambaram, the Lok Sabha MP from Sivaganga, his alleged close associate S Bhaskararaman, company Talawandi Sabo Power Ltd (TSPL), a subsidiary of Vedanta and Mumbai-based Bell Tools, through which bribes were allegedly routed, they said.

The agency has invoked charges of criminal conspiracy, cheating, and forgery under the Indian Penal Code and provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act, they said.

Other charge-sheeted accused include Viral Mehta, Anup Agarwal, Mansoor Siddiqui and Chetan Shrivastava, they said.

The CBI has filed the charge sheet after two years of probe into its FIR registered in 2022 where it had alleged that the Punjab-based TSPL was setting up a 1980 MW thermal power plant and the work was outsourced to a Chinese company Shandong Electric Power Construction Corp (SEPCO).

The project was running behind its schedule and the company was allegedly facing prospects of penalty.

"In order to avoid penal actions for the delay, the said private company (TSPL) of Mansa was trying to bring more and more Chinese persons and professionals for their site at district Mansa (Punjab) and needed project visas over and above the ceiling imposed by the Ministry of Home Affairs," the CBI said in a statement in 2022.

The CBI FIR, which contained findings of the investigating officer who probed the preliminary enquiry, alleged that an executive of TSPL approached Karti Chidambaram through his "close associate/front man" Bhaskararaman.

"They devised a back-door way to defeat the purpose of the ceiling (maximum of project visas permissible to the company's plant) by granting permission to re-use 263 project visas allotted to the said Chinese company's officials," the agency had said after the registration of FIR and searches.

Project visas were a special type of visa introduced in 2010 for the power and steel sector for which detailed guidelines were issued during Chidambaram's tenure as home minister but there was no provision for the re-issue of project visas, the FIR had alleged.

"As per prevalent guidelines, deviation in rare and exceptional cases could be considered and granted only with the approval of the Home Secretary. However, in view of the above circumstances, the deviation in terms of re-use of project visas is likely to be approved by the then Home Minister...," it had alleged.

A TSPL executive allegedly submitted a letter to the home ministry on July 30, 2011, seeking approval to reuse the project visas allotted to his company, which was approved within a month and permission was issued, the FIR had alleged.

"On August 17, 2011, the executive, on being directed by Bhaskararaman, sent a copy of the above a letter dated July 30, 2011 to him through e-mail which was forwarded to Karti... Bhakaskararaman after discussion with P Chidambaram, the then home minister, demanded an illegal gratification of Rs 50 lakh for ensuring the approval," the FIR had alleged.

The FIR had alleged that the payment of said bribe was routed from TSP to Karti Chidambaram and Bhaskararaman through Mumbai-based Bell Tools Ltd with payments camouflaged under two invoices raised for consultancy and out-of-pocket expenses for Chinese visas-related works, the CBI FIR said, adding that the TSPL executive had later thanked Karti Chidambaram and Bhaskararaman on email.

Payment against the invoices was made by TSPL to Bell Tools Limited through cheque and then the said amount was paid in cash to Bhaskararaman, it had alleged.

"... Whereas the private company based at Mumbai was never in any kind of work relating to visas rather it was in an entirely different business of industrial knives," the agency had said in a statement.

"Information exists that Chidambaram had been on the board of Vedanta Group whereas his son Karti had taken financial favour from Sterlite Optical Technologies Limited, Mumbai (a Vedanta Group Company), which had lent Rs 1.5 crore in November 2003 to his company namely Meltraack India Limited, Chennai and the interest thereupon was waived off in August 2004 (when...P Chidambaram sworn as the Finance Minister,...)," the FIR had alleged.

It has been alleged that Karti Chidambaram and his frontman Bhaskararaman indulged in the collection of undue payments for settling the issues pending with the offices under the influence of P Chidambaram as minister in various ministries.

Stage Set For Omar Abdullah To Take Oath As Jammu And Kashmir Chief Minister

The stage is set for Omar Abdullah to take oath as the first chief minister of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir following the victory of his National Conference in the maiden assembly election after the abrogation of Article 370.

Preparations have been put in place for the oath ceremony of the chief minister and his council of ministers at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC) on Wednesday, officials said.

The chief minister and his ministers will be administered the oath of office and secrecy by J-K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha at 11:30 am.

Security has been tightened around the venue of the swearing-in ceremony, the officials said.

"The security has been increased especially as a lot of VVIPs will be attending the event. We will ensure the smooth conduct of the event," the officials added.

Invitations to attend the oath ceremony have been sent to the constituents of the INDIA bloc.

National Conference (NC) Kashmir provincial president Nasir Aslam Wani said it was not clear yet who will be attending the ceremony.

"We will get to know about the VVIP attendees later this evening after receiving their confirmation," Wani said.

Sinha on Monday invited the NC vice president to take oath as the J&K chief minister.

The invitation came a day after the Centre revoked the President's rule in the Union Territory.

In a letter to Abdullah, Mr Sinha said, "I have received a letter of 11th October 2024 from Dr. Farooq Abdullah, President, Jammu and Kashmir National Conference, wherein it has been informed that you have been unanimously elected as Leader of the Legislature Party."

He said he has also received a letter from Jammu and Kashmir Congress chief Tariq Hameed Karra, CPI(M) secretary G N Malik, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national secretary Pankaj Kumar Gupta and Independent MLAs-elect Payare Lal Sharma, Satish Sharma, Mohammad Akram, Rameshwar Singh and Muzafar Iqbal Khan extending their support to the NC.

"I am pleased to invite you to form and lead the Government of Jammu and Kashmir. As separately settled, I shall administer Oath of Office and Secrecy to you, and to those recommended by you for induction as members of your Council of Ministers, at SKICC, Srinagar on 16th October 2024 at 11:30 a.m," Sinha said in his letter.

The LG's emissary had handed over the letter to Abdullah and informed him about the date and time of the swearing-in ceremony.

Abdullah was unanimously elected the leader of the NC Legislature Party on Thursday, setting the stage for his second term as chief minister. His first term, from 2009 to 2014 when Jammu and Kashmir was a full-fledged state, was also under an NC-Congress coalition government.

The NC won 42 out of the 90 seats which went to poll in the recent elections, while the Congress won six. Together, the two pre-poll allies hold a majority in the 95-member assembly -- five members are to be nominated by the LG.

Their strength is further bolstered by the support from five Independent MLAs-elect and a lone AAP MLA-elect.

Climate Change Could Reduce Amazon's Methane Absorbtion By 70%: Study

Extreme temperatures and humidity driven by climate change could reduce the Amazon rainforest's capacity to absorb the greenhouse gas methane by 70 per cent, a study has found. Researchers said that under a warmer climate, the extreme rainfall and droughts projected for South America's Amazon could impact its net greenhouse gas emissions.

Often referred to as the 'lungs of the planet', the tropical rainforest lies majorly in Brazil, with parts in Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, among others, and is known to be a crucial 'greenhouse gas sink' that absorbs these gases from the air.

However, 20 per cent of the Amazon region, which remains flooded for nearly half a year, releases methane, countering its ability to absorb other greenhouse gases, the researchers at the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil said. Their study is published in the journal Environmental Microbiome.

Previous studies have shown that the flooded areas of Amazon contribute up to almost 30 per cent of methane emissions from wetlands globally.

"Although it's already been shown that factors such as air temperature and seasonal flooding can influence the composition of microbial communities affecting the flow of methane in these environments. But what should we expect in the context of climate change and the projected extreme weather?" Lead author Julia Gontijo, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of California, Davis, US, said.

For this study, researchers took soil samples from two flooded regions of the Amazon and one from elevated forests known to absorb methane. These samples were subjected to extreme temperatures -- 27 degrees Celsius and 30 degrees Celsius -- and humidity.

They found that in the soil sample from the elevated forest methane absorbtion dropped by 70 per cent in hot and dry conditions, while methane production surged in heavy rainfall, as the soil was not used to dealing with extreme humidity.

"Within this (elevated) forest soil, an average decrease of 70 per cent in (methane) consumption potential was observed with temperature increase in dry conditions," the authors wrote.

It means that the floodplain microbiome can adapt to climate change but the upland forest microbiome is sensitive to its effects, which could cause a shift in the balance of greenhouse gas emissions in the Amazon in future, Gontijo said.

"In view of the Amazon Rainforest biome's importance in proportion to global levels, this could represent a very serious problem," she said.

She further said that in both (the) floodplains, although there were no observation of significant changes in methane emission patterns, the number of methane-producing microorganisms increased that can be a future problem.

The results could be used in framing public policies, the author added

When Baba Siddique Helped End SRK-Salman Khan Feud

Former Maharashtra minister Baba Siddique was shot dead in Mumbai's Bandra today. A political veteran in Maharashtra, Mr Siddique left Congress, after nearly five decades of association with the party, and joined the ruling BJP's ally Nationalist Congress Party in February this year.

He had served as a minister when the Congress and the Sharad Pawar-led NCP coalition government was in power.

Mr Siddique was known not just for his political connections across party lines but also for hosting lavish parties. In one such party in 2013, Mr Siddique inadvertently played a role in uniting two of Bollywood's megastars, Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan.

Despite occasional conflicts and publicised disagreements, the two actors have maintained a bond over the years. One significant moment in their relationship unfolded at Baba Siddique's Iftaar party in 2013, bringing an end to a five-year-long cold war.

The Iftaar party hosted by Mr Siddique became the backdrop for the much-anticipated reconciliation between the Khans. Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan, who had previously avoided each other following a heated argument at Katrina Kaif's birthday party in 2008, finally came face to face. The tension that had overshadowed their relationship dissipated as they warmly greeted each other and shared a heartfelt hug. A photo capturing that moment went viral across social media and news channels alike.

India "Concerned" As Israel Hits UN Facility In Lebanon, IDF Puts Out Map

India has expressed grave "concern" over the abysmal conflict situation in West Asia as Israel intensifies its resolve targeting Hezbollah hideouts. New Delhi issued a statement today after UN peacekeepers stationed in south Lebanon came under fire from Israeli forces.

Among the UN peacekeepers stationed in Lebanon, there are approximately 900 Indian soldiers. It is important to note that they were not at the United Nations Interim Force In Lebanon or UNIFIL headquarters at the time it was attacked by Israeli forces. Besides the soldiers, there are around 25 staff officers, including medical experts deployed there.

"We are concerned at the deteriorating security situation along the Blue Line," the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement, adding that "We continue to monitor the situation very closely."

New Delhi underscored the importance it attaches to United Nations' peacekeeping initiatives saying UN premises cannot be allowed to be targeted, and respecting its sanctity is a mandate.

"Inviolability of UN premises must be respected by all, and appropriate measures taken to ensure the safety of UN peacekeepers and the sanctity of their mandate," the foreign ministry said.

Israel however, has defended its actions, with the Israeli Defense Forces or IDF claiming that "Since the beginning of the war, Hezbollah has fired more than 130 rockets in close proximity" to 26 United Nations facilities."

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

The IDF also put out a map in which it has identified these places as being "less than 300 meters" from the UN facilities.

WHAT THE UNITED NATIONS SAID - UNIFIL STATEMENT

The UN has said, "Recent escalation along the Blue Line is causing widespread destruction of towns and villages in south Lebanon, while rockets continue to be launched towards Israel, including civilian areas. In the past days we have seen incursions from Israel into Lebanon in Naqoura and other areas. Israel Defense Forces (IDF) soldiers have clashed with Hizbullah elements on the ground in Lebanon."

It further said that "UNIFIL's Naqoura headquarters and nearby positions have been repeatedly hit," adding that on Thursday "two peacekeepers were injured after an IDF Merkava tank fired its weapon toward an observation tower at UNIFIL's headquarters in Naqoura, directly hitting it and causing them to fall. The injuries are fortunately, this time, not serious, but they remain in hospital."

Speaking about the Israeli offensive, the UN statement asserted that "IDF soldiers also fired on UN position (UNP) 1-31 in Labbouneh, hitting the entrance to the bunker where peacekeepers were sheltering, and damaging vehicles and a communications system. An IDF drone was observed flying inside the UN position up to the bunker entrance."

It further highlighted that on Wednesday "IDF (Israeli) soldiers deliberately fired at and disabled the position's perimeter-monitoring cameras. They also deliberately fired on UNP 1-32A in Ras Naqoura, where regular Tripartite meetings were held before the conflict began, damaging lighting and a relay station."

Reminding Israeli forces that its attacks on UN facilities is a grave violation of international humanitarian law as well as UN Security Council resolution 1701, the UN said, "We remind the IDF and all actors of their obligations to ensure the safety and security of UN personnel and property and to respect the inviolability of UN premises at all times. UNIFIL peacekeepers are present in south Lebanon to support a return to stability under Security Council mandate. Any deliberate attack on peacekeepers is a grave violation of international humanitarian law and of Security Council resolution 1701."

WHAT IS UN SECURITY COUNCIL RESOLUTION 1701

United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701 is a resolution that was adopted with an intention to resolve the 2006 Lebanon War.

The resolution has been the linchpin of peace between Israel and Lebanon for almost two decades and the 10,000 UN peacekeepers who are tasked with implementing it on the ground.

Adopted unanimously by the UN Security Council in 2006, the purpose of resolution 1701 continues to be about ending hostilities between Hezbollah and Israel, with the Council calling for a permanent ceasefire to be based on the creation of a buffer zone.

WHAT IS 'THE BLUE LINE'

The 'Blue Line' is a United Nations-recognised demarcation line to indicate that Israel had withdrawn its military from southern Lebanon. It separates Lebanon from Israel and the Golan Heights, but it is not an official international border.

Stretching for 120km along Lebanon's southern frontier and Israel's northern border, the so-called "Blue Line" is "a key to peace in the region" and one of the central elements of resolution 1701 since the war in 2006, with UNIFIL peacekeepers being its temporary custodian, according to UN Peacekeeping.

Based on various historical maps, some dating back almost a century, the Blue Line is not a border, but a temporary "line of withdrawal" set by the UN in 2000 for the practical purpose of confirming the withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon.

Whenever Israeli or Lebanese authorities wish to undertake any activities close to the Blue Line, UNIFIL requests that they provide advance notice, allowing the UN mission to keep authorities on all sides informed, to minimise any misunderstandings that could lead to increased tensions.

ISRAEL'S LETTER TO THE UNITED NATIONS

Israel's Minister of Foreign Affairs has written a letter to the United Nations clarifying its stance amid the ongoing and escalating crisis in the Middle East (West Asia), especially with regard to its operations in Lebanon.

In its letter, the minister wrote that "On Ictiber 8, 2023, Hezbollah, a terrorist, Iranian-backed organisation, launched an unprovoked attack on Israel, joining the war initiated by Hazas on October 7, 2023. Since then they have fired over 13,000 projectiles, 1500 anti-tank missiles and hundreds of explosive drones at Israeli communities, forcing more than 63,000 people to evacuate their homes."

The minister further said that "This war which was imposed on Israel has so far resulted in 51 casualties and over 372 injuries, besides causing severe damage ot Israeli towns and villages."

The minister said that as a result of Hezbollah's unilateral and unprovoked actions, "One year later, on October 1, 2024 the IDF initiated a targeted, limited raid operations in southern Lebanon aimed at Hezbollah military assets and infrastructure along the Blue Line, with a goal of dismantling them and neutralising the ongoing threat."

People Of Unrecognised Villages Can't Receive Government Benefits: Manipur

The Manipur Cabinet on Thursday decided that people living in unrecognised villages in the state can no longer receive government schemes such as MGNREGS, a senior minister said in Imphal.

The decision came two days after Chief Minister N Biren Singh said that several officials had given recognition to hill villages for the benefit of their community, without obtaining approval from the state government.

He had also said that residents of such villages would not get government facilities.

"Only the villages recognised by the government will be given government schemes. This will include MGNREGA. These (benefits) will not be given to the people living in unrecognised villages," Health Minister Sapam Ranjan told reporters after the Cabinet meeting.

One just cannot set up a village, give it a name and avail benefits of those schemes, said Ranjan, also the government spokesperson.

"We cannot have villages growing by leaps and bounds. So, it is important to follow rules" he said.

At the Cabinet meeting chaired by the chief minister, 51 listed agendas and some unlisted agendas were discussed, Ranjan said.

"The cabinet also reviewed the disturbed area status in the state," he said.

The government on Monday extended the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) by another six months in Manipur excluding 19 police station areas falling under the Imphal Valley and a region that shares its boundary with Assam.

On the dengue situation in the state, Ranjan said the health department is doing everything to contain the issue.

"Coordinated and responsible efforts with the public are required to reduce the source of dengue. We have to destroy the breeding grounds. I reiterate it once again, if we take dengue lightly, it will be serious for all of us," the health minister said.

He said that the number of dengue cases is lower now in comparison to that last year.

"Till yesterday, there have been 1195 cases with Imphal and Imphal West district together accounting for 1,070 cases. We have lost 3/4 precious lives to dengue," Ranjan said.

The spokesperson said the Cabinet also discussed recruitment of jobs on contract for different departments, appointments on compassionate grounds in the police department and getting land for the establishment of a police station in the Joujangtek area.

Heavy Rain Along With Thunderstorms Hit Mumbai, Festival Celebrations Hit

Heavy rains accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning lashed several parts of Mumbai late Thursday evening.

Due to the showers, waterlogging was reported from some low-lying areas in the metropolis.

The sudden downpour took many by surprise as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had only issued a 'yellow' alert for light to moderate rainfall in the financial capital.

The showers also hampered the ongoing Navratri festivities and spoiled 'garba' (a ritualistic and devotional dance associated with the nine-day festival) plans of many revellers.

Vistara Flight Lands Safely in Delhi After Fake Bomb Threat: Report

A Vistara plane carrying nearly 290 passengers from London to Delhi on Wednesday received a bomb threat, which turned out to be a hoax following a thorough inspection of the aircraft after it landed safely at the airport in the national capital, according to sources.

The sources said that a piece of paper with a message about a bomb onboard the plane was found in one of the lavatories, and the relevant authorities were immediately informed.

Delhi Police said standard security protocols were followed, and a thorough inspection was conducted.

"No suspicious items were found," it said in a statement.

The Airport Operations Control Centre (AOCC) at Delhi was informed about the bomb threat at 0845 hours and later the aircraft landed safely at the airport at 1145 hours.

"It was informed that a note was discovered in the lavatory of the flight with the message: 'BOMB THIS FLIGHT'," Delhi Police said, adding that all passengers disembarked without incident.

The sources said there were nearly 290 passengers in the Boeing 787 aircraft.

Soon after the paper with the threat message was discovered while the aircraft was in the air, the crew carried out a search but did not find anything suspicious. So, it was decided that there was no need for diversion, and the aircraft continued to fly to Delhi, they added.

An airline spokesperson said a security concern was noted by its staff operating the flight UK 018 while it was coming from London to Delhi.

In line with the protocol, the relevant authorities were immediately informed, and the aircraft was taken to the isolation bay for mandatory checks after landing safely at the Delhi airport.

"We fully cooperated with the relevant authorities in completing the necessary security checks," the spokesperson said in a statement.

Discoveries Made By Nobel Prize Laureates In Physics Explained

The Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to two scientists on Tuesday for discoveries that laid the groundwork for the artificial intelligence used by hugely popular tools such as ChatGPT.

British-Canadian Geoffrey Hinton, known as a "godfather of AI," and US physicist John Hopfield were given the prize for "discoveries and inventions that enable machine learning with artificial neural networks," the Nobel jury said.

But what are those, and what does this all mean? Here are some answers.

What are neural networks and machine learning?

Mark van der Wilk, an expert in machine learning at the University of Oxford, told AFP that an artificial neural network is a mathematical construct "loosely inspired" by the human brain.

Our brains have a network of cells called neurons, which respond to outside stimuli -- such as things our eyes have seen or ears have heard -- by sending signals to each other.

When we learn things, some connections between neurons get stronger, while others get weaker.

Unlike traditional computing, which works more like reading a recipe, artificial neural networks roughly mimic this process.

The biological neurons are replaced with simple calculations sometimes called "nodes" -- and the incoming stimuli they learn from is replaced by training data.

The idea is that this could allow the network to learn over time -- hence the term machine learning.

What did Hopfield discover?

But before machines would be able to learn, another human trait was necessary: memory.

Ever struggle to remember a word? Consider the goose. You might cycle through similar words -- goon, good, ghoul -- before striking upon goose.

"If you are given a pattern that's not exactly the thing that you need to remember, you need to fill in the blanks," van der Wilk said.

"That's how you remember a particular memory."

This was the idea behind the "Hopfield network" -- also called "associative memory" -- which the physicist developed back in the early 1980s.

Hopfield's contribution meant that when an artificial neural network is given something that is slightly wrong, it can cycle through previously stored patterns to find the closest match.

This proved a major step forward for AI.

What about Hinton?

In 1985, Hinton revealed his own contribution to the field -- or at least one of them -- called the Boltzmann machine.

Named after 19th century physicist Ludwig Boltzmann, the concept introduced an element of randomness.

This randomness was ultimately why today's AI-powered image generators can produce endless variations to the same prompt.

Hinton also showed that the more layers a network has, "the more complex its behaviour can be".

This in turn made it easier to "efficiently learn a desired behaviour," French machine learning researcher Francis Bach told AFP.

What is it used for?

Despite these ideas being in place, many scientists lost interest in the field in the 1990s.

Machine learning required enormously powerful computers capable of handling vast amounts of information. It takes millions of images of dogs for these algorithms to be able to tell a dog from a cat.

So it was not until the 2010s that a wave of breakthroughs "revolutionised everything related to image processing and natural language processing," Bach said.

From reading medical scans to directing self-driving cars, forecasting the weather to creating deepfakes, the uses of AI are now too numerous to count.

But is it really physics?

Hinton had already won the Turing award, which is considered the Nobel for computer science.

But several experts said his was a well-deserved Nobel win in the field of physics, which started science down the road that would lead to AI.

French researcher Damien Querlioz pointed out that these algorithms were originally "inspired by physics, by transposing the concept of energy onto the field of computing".

Van der Wilk said the first Nobel "for the methodological development of AI" acknowledged the contribution of the physics community, as well as the winners.

And while ChatGPT can sometimes make AI seem genuinely creative, it is important to remember the "machine" part of machine learning.

"There is no magic happening here," van der Wilk emphasised.

"Ultimately, everything in AI is multiplications and additions."

"Harassment": Congress Slams Probe Agency Summons To Manipur Unit Chief

The Congress on Monday claimed that its Manipur unit chief K Meghachandra has received summons from the Enforcement Directorate and slammed the development as politics of vendetta aimed at covering up the Union government's "colossal failures" in the state.

Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh said "those who are afraid intimidate" and asserted that the Congress will never be silenced.

"K Meghachandra Singh, MLA and President of the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee, has been speaking out fearlessly and aggressively against the non-biological PM, the Union Home Minister, the Chief Minister of Manipur, and the BJP, exposing the manner in which they have destroyed Manipur since May 2023," Jairam Ramesh said in a post on X.

"Today he has received summons from the ED. This is nothing but the politics of vendetta, vengeance, harassment, and revenge," he said.

Jairam Ramesh alleged that this action is to cover up the Union Government's "colossal failures in the state -- reflected in Mr. Narendra Modi's refusal to visit the state since it blew up 17 months back".

"Those who are afraid intimidate. The Congress will NEVER be silenced," the Congress general secretary asserted.

The Congress has been attacking the prime minister for not visiting Manipur since violence erupted last year.

Ethnic violence in Manipur erupted on May 3, 2023, following a tribal solidarity march in the hill districts to protest against the majority Meitei community's push for Scheduled Tribe status.

Since then, the violence has claimed the lives of more than 220 individuals, including members of both the Kuki and Meitei communities, as well as security personnel.

Body Of Former Karnataka MLA's Missing Brother Found In Phalguni River: Cops

The body of younger brother of former Karnataka MLA Mohideen Bava has been found in Phalguni river mouth on Monday after 12 hours of search, police said.

B M Mumtaz Ali (52) was reported missing since Sunday morning and his badly damaged car was found abandoned near the Kulur bridge, they said.

Ali, a prominent businessman and chairman of the Misbah Group of Educational Institutions, is a well-known figure in the local community.

According to police, he left his residence in his vehicle around 3 am on Sunday, roaming around the city before parking near the Kullur Bridge around 5 am.

Alarmed by his last communication, his daughter immediately contacted the local police.

His disappearance prompted a large-scale search operation, with family members, including Bawa, present at the scene, police said.

An FIR had already been registered at Kavoor police station against six accused, including a woman, who had allegedly threatened, blackmailed, and extorted lakhs of rupees from Ali, with demands for even more money.

Confirming the recovery of the body, Mangaluru Police Commissioner Anupam Agarwal told PTI that investigation was ongoing to ascertain the cause of his death.

"We deployed teams of NDRF (National Disaster Response Force), SDRF (State Disaster Response Force) and fire department. Around six teams were working continuously to trace the body... This morning, at 6 am, we resumed operation and we found the body around 10.15 am. The body was shifted to hospital for post-mortem and further examination," he told reporters here.

The victim's family alleged that he was subjected to blackmailing since last couple of months. People were threatening him to pay money or his videos would be released, he said.

"As per the information of the family members, there were some sex videos on the basis of which, he was being blackmailed. He paid some Rs 50 lakh in this process. He was further pressurised to pay more money," he said According to him, based on the complaint received by the family members, a case was registered under sections of extortion and other relevant sections. They have named six people, who were part of this gang and were blackmailing him.

"After recovering of body, we have added section of abetment to suicide in this case. We will be taking up further investigation. All the six people named in the FIR are currently on the run. Our teams are searching them and hopefully, we will nab them soon," Agarwal added.

The body was taken to the city's AJ Hospital for post-mortem, police said.

Delhi Court Orders Hospital To Release Dead Man's Sperm To Parents For Surrogacy

The Delhi High Court on Friday directed Sir Ganga Ram Hospital to release the frozen sperm of a dead man to his parents for the reproduction of a child.

The High Court said that there is no prohibition on posthumous reproduction in Indian law.

Justice Prathiba M Singh issued the direction while disposing of the petition moved by the father of the dead man who sought the release of preserved sperm from the Ganga Ram Hospital.

The High Court said, " As there is no prohibition on posthumous reproduction in Indian law, the sperm can be used for reproduction."

Justice Prathiba M. Singh directed the hospital to release the frozen sperm of his son to him.

She said that it is very common to bring up their grandchildren by the grandparents.

However, the High Court said that the sperm shall not be used for commercial purposes.

In November 2022, the High Court issued notice to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and sought its response to a plea seeking the release of a dead man's sperm from a hospital. The plea was moved by the parents of the man.

The petitioner sought direction for the release of the frozen sperm of their son kept in the in vitro fertilisation (IVF) lab in Delhi's Ganga Ram hospital.

Their son had died of cancer in September 2020. They had approached the hospital but it had refused to release it, stating that there were no instructions from the government. It can release the same in the direction of the court.

Earlier, the court had issued notice to the Delhi government and Ganga Ram Hospital. The hospital had filed a report stating that there are no Assisted Reproductive Technology (ATR) laws related to the release of frozen semen samples to his family.

It was also submitted that the related ICMR guidelines and the Surrogacy Act are also silent on this issue.

While issuing notice to the Centre, the High Court observed that the government's view is important on the matter as the decision of the court would have an impact on the ART (Regulations) Act.

Trinamool Leader Arrested In RG Kar Hospital Corruption Case: CBI

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday arrested a Trinamool Congress leader and a house-staff attached to R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital, Asish Pande, said to be a close confidant of Sandip Ghosh, in connection with the the financial irregularities case pertaining to state-run medical college and hospital that emerged in course of investigation into the rape-murder of a junior doctor.

Mr Pande was also once summoned to the CBI's Salt Lake office earlier and questioned in connection with the matter.

Mr Pande's name first surfaced in the second week of September, when the CBI officials found out that he had put up at a hotel in Salt Lake on the night of August 9, the day when the body of the junior woman doctor who was raped and murdered was discovered at the seminar hall within the R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital complex.

He is the fifth person to be arrested by the CBI in connection with the financial irregularities at R.G Kar. Earlier, in September, Ghosh and three others were arrested in the same case.

The other three arrests made in this connection are Afsar Ali, Suman Hazra and Biplab Sinha.

While Ali is the personal bodyguard of Ghosh, Sinha and Hazra are vendors who were looking into the supply of medical equipment to R.G. Kar when Sandip Ghosh was the principal there.

Besides the financial irregularities case, the CBI is also conducting a parallel investigation against Ghosh in the rape and murder case.

A polygraph test of Ghosh was also conducted.

The main charges in the financial irregularities case are tendering of different contracts to private and outsourced parties of his confidence without getting the necessary approval from the state health department and the college council and getting the infrastructure-related tasks of the hospital done by private outsourced entities or individuals instead of following the standard practice of getting them done by the state public works department (PWD).

Another serious charge against Sandip Ghosh is selling biomedical waste from the hospital which is illegal.

There had also been allegations against Ghosh of using the hospital business in earning money through businesses run in the name of others, which is also considered a serious offence on the part of a government official.

The most disturbing charge in the matter is selling organs of unidentified bodies that were brought to the hospital mortuary for post-mortem, at "lucrative prices" outside.

Siddaramaiah Must Step Down, Says HD Kumaraswamy, Calls For CBI Probe

Union minister HD Kumaraswamy today tweaked his party's low-key response to Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's alleged involvement in the MUDA scam, demanding not only a CBI inquiry into the matter but also his immediate resignation.

Speaking to NDTV in an exclusive interview, Mr Kumaraswamy said he was "not demanding resignation for the political issue", but was concerned about how the Chief Minister responded to events.

The ball was set in motion with the Governor's green light for the prosecution of the Chief Minister, which the government challenged in court. But the opposition BJP and Mr Kumaraswamy's Janata Dal Secular, have other allegations besides.

"As a Chief Minister... how he misled (people) misused his office for the protection of his all illegal activities" is what counts, Mr Kumaraswamy said.

This is also part of the reason why the JDS is calling for an investigation by a Central agency. The state officials, Mr Kumaraswamy said, are under the influence of the government and are working to "destroy all the documentary evidence".

Mr Siddaramaiah, he said, must resign. Else he would "close that issue by misusing his office".

A money laundering case was filed against Mr Siddaramaiah by the Enforcement Directorate yesterday, following which, his wife wrote to the Mysuru Urban Development Authority or MUDA,  offering to return the 14 tracts of land that are at the heart of the controversy.

The offer has been accepted and the MUDA said they would take legal advice for the next step.
There have been calls from other quarters for a CBI investigation, but that appears unlikely with the Karnataka government withdrawing the general consent for its operations in the state.

The announcement was made last week by Law Minister HK Patil.

The MUDA case involves allegations of illegalities in the allotment of Mysuru's 14 premium sites to Mr Siddaramaiah's wife, BM Parvathi.

It has been alleged that the compensatory sites allotted to her are far more valuable than the land MUDA acquired from her.

Mr Siddaramaiah had denied any wrongdoing and has refused to resign.

As Iran Fires Over 100 Rockets At Israel, Indian Embassy Issues Advisory

Amid escalating tensions in West Asia (Middle East), the Indian Embassy in Israel has cautioned all Indians to stay vigilant and follow safety protocols advised by local authorities. The advisory was issued within hours of Iran threatening an attack on Israel in the aftermath of Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah being killed in an Israeli missile attack.

Iran followed up on the threat by launching over a hundred rockets at Israel, Iran's state media confirmed. Israel's defence forces said that its nationals were already in bunkers, taking shelter from the attack.

The nearly year-long conflict between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza strip has intensified with Tel Aviv going after Hezbollah - an Iran-backed militant organisation which supports Hamas. Iran had vowed to avenge the killing of Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah, killed last week, and had warned Israel of an imminent ballistic missile attack against it.

"In view of the prevailing situation in the region, all Indian nationals in Israel are advised to stay vigilant and adhere to safety protocols as advised by the local authorities," The Indian Embassy in Tel Aviv said in its advisory.

"Please exercise caution, avoid unnecessary travel within the country and stay close to safety shelters," it added.

The Embassy also shared round-the-clock helpline numbers where Indian nationals can call in case of emergency. "The Embassy is closely monitoring the situation and remains in regular touch with Israeli authorities to ensure the safety of all our nationals," it said, adding, "In case of any emergency, please contact the 24x7 helpline of the Embassy - +972-547520711 and +972-543278392."

The Embassy also shared an e-mail ID - cons1.telaviv@mea.gov.in - for Indian nationals to reach out, urging those "who are yet to register with the Embassy" to please do so immediately. It attached the form along with the message.

56 Years After Air Force Plane Crash Over Rohtang Pass, 4 More Bodies Found

More than 56 years after an ill-fated AN-12 aircraft of the Indian Air Force crashed over the Rohtang Pass in Himachal Pradesh, the bodies of four more victims were recovered, marking a significant success in one of India's longest-running search operations.

Army officials said the bodies were found by a joint team comprising personnel from the Dogra Scouts of the Indian Army and Tiranga Mountain Rescue.

The twin-engine turboprop transport aircraft, carrying 102 people, had gone missing on February 7, 1968 while flying from Chandigarh to Leh.

"In an extraordinary development, the ongoing search and rescue mission to recover the remains of personnel from the AN-12 aircraft, which crashed on Rohtang Pass in 1968, has achieved significant breakthroughs," said an official.

For decades, the wreckage and remains of the victims remained lost in the icy terrain.

It was only in 2003 when mountaineers from the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering discovered the wreckage, sparking multiple expeditions over the years by the Indian Army, especially the Dogra Scouts.

The Dogra Scouts have been at the forefront of search missions in 2005, 2006, 2013, and 2019.

Only five bodies of the victims were recovered by 2019 in view of the treacherous conditions and unforgiving terrain of the crash site, according to officials.

The Chandra Bhaga Mountain Expedition has now recovered four more bodies, bringing renewed hope to the families of the victims and the nation, they said.

The three out of four bodies are of Malkhan Singh, Sepoy Narayan Singh and Craftsman Thomas Charan, the officials said.

The documents recovered from the remaining body have not conclusively identified the individual. However, the details of their relatives were found, the officials said.

Charan hailed from Elanthoor, Pathanamthitta district in Kerala. His mother Eleama, has been informed of the recovery, they said.

Malkhan Singh's identity was confirmed with the help of documents obtained from official records.

Sepoy Singh, who worked in the Army Medical Corps, was identified through official documents. Singh hailed from the village of Kolpadi, Chamoli Tehsil in Garhwal, Uttarakhand, the officials said.
