Ukraine Air Force Commander Dismissed Day After F-16 Jet Crash

President Volodymyr Zelensky dismissed Ukraine's Air Force Commander Mykola Oleshchuk on Friday, according to a presidential decree.

The dismissal was announced just a day after the Ukrainian military reported that an F-16 jet crashed and its pilot died while repelling a major Russian strike on Monday.

"I have decided to replace the commander of the Air Forces... I am eternally grateful to all our military pilots," President Volodymyr Zelensky said in his evening address.

He did not give a reason for dismissal but mentioned that personnel must be protected, and that there was a need to strengthen the command level.

Ukraine's General Staff said that General Lieutenant Anatoliy Kryvonozhka would temporarily perform the duties of commander.

The Ukrainian military did not provide a reason for Monday's crash but said the jet came down while it was approaching a Russian target. Oleshchuk said on Monday partners from the US were helping to investigate the incident.

A US defense official told Reuters that the crash did not appear to be the result of Russian fire, and possible causes from pilot error to mechanical failure were still being investigated.

The arrival of the first F-16 jets was a milestone for Ukraine in the fight against the full-scale invasion Russia launched 2-1/2 years ago.

"Stand Up, Be A Man": Shobhaa De Asks Malayalam Producer Mohanlal To Act On Kerala Film Industry #MeToo

Author and columnist Shobhaa De has strongly criticised the "silence" in Bollywood and the disappearing act of Malayalam cinema director Mohanlal after a massive #MeToo movement hit Kerala's film industry.

Over a dozen Malayalam cinema actors, directors and producers face rape and sex harassment charges after the Justice K Hema Committee report, which looked into issues faced by women in Kerala's film industry, made it to the public.

Shobhaa De singled out Mohanlal for his 'cowardice' in resigning as chief of the Association of Malayalam Movie Actors (AMMA), instead of staying where he is and ensuring the survivors get justice. All members of the film body's executive committee had also quit. "Stand up, be a man, tell your other team members to take responsibility and help those who are at the receiving end," she said.

"The tragedy in this particular case is that for nearly five years the Justice Hemareport had been lying there, nothing had been done. There was a breakaway group started by some women in the Malayalam film industry who were completely disheartened by the pathetic working conditions, and it was a cosy men's club controlled by 15-20 men, who had absolutely power over their working and personal life," Shobhaa De told NDTV.

"In 2017 there was an abduction and rape case. What we are seeing today is a very strong and overdue reaction to the general rot in the Malayalam film industry. But it's not unique to Malayalam cinema. It's widespread. It's happening in Bollywood, in Bengal, I'm sure in the film industry in Karnataka as well," she said.

A special investigation team (SIT) will look into rape allegations against Malayalam actor Siddique

Shobhaa De pointed at the "patriarchal system" that has taken hold of the film industry as a huge factor behind the #MeToo cases.

"The way this industry works is it's a patriarchal system in its nastiest, most toxic form. Women seem to be completely voiceless and powerless. So things must be changed. I'm extremely, in a way, disheartened, shocked that the all-powerful executive committee could do headed by Mohanlal was to resign en masse. How does it help?

"Good leadership is about saying they are going to stay right where they are and ensure some kind of action against the perpetrators of violence against women, sexual favours being exchanged, even something as basic as toilets (on the sets) being denied to women in the film industry. This is not only inhuman, but callous, it's cold-blooded, it's well-calculated. It's not as if people were not aware of this pathetic condition. No one spoke up. Worse, no one did anything about it.

"I'm equally shocked that not a single strong, male voice has emerged out of Bollywood. Not a single male actor of any worth has spoken against what they are seeing in the industry. They are all colleagues. You stand by your colleagues when they need you and speak up when needed to speak up, whether men or women," Shobhaa De told NDTV.

She said it seems to be a complicit agreement, that men across the board in the industry "not to damn each other and not to draw too much focus into what has been going on."

Add image caption here

Actor Mohanlal resigned as president of Association of Malayalam Movie Actors, or AMMA

"I don't accept there's apathy. This is a tipping point. This kind of conversation we didn't hear for the last five years. This thing (report) that has been tabled is not something new... Bollywood hasn't spared its women, and yet how many women do you hear speaking up? How many women are you hearing from the Bengal film industry?

"Where are the big stars from Bollywood? They didn't even as much as say 'we stand by the victims, we stand in solidarity with the victims of these atrocities which have been going on unchecked, unabated because of the men in the industry who call all the shots.

"Till that equation changes, I don't see anything much changing because the money is controlled by the men, they decide who is in, who is out, who gets the job, who gets a role, which technician is cooperative, which women is willing to go to bed with a director, producer, a cameraperson.

"If not, if she is seen as a troublemaker, if she's seen as a woman who stands up for her self-respect, she is out. Which means we are rendering a group of women who may be completely qualified to do the job, but would be discriminated against because they are not willing to trade their bodies for a job. You are impacting the work environment in a way that you're leaving out women from earning their livelihood," the top author and columnist told NDTV.

"This is unforgivable, unless action is taken. Action should be taken at a tribunal level. The perpetrators must be punished. It is time for action. This should not be some noise only to disappear," she said.

Cheers Or Tears? How Beer And Cider Could Trigger Gout, Says New Research

A recent study has found that certain alcoholic beverages may increase the risk of developing gout, a painful form of arthritis. The research, conducted by a team from China, analyzed the drinking habits of over 400,000 people in the UK.

According to the study, men who consume alcohol at least five times a week have twice the risk of developing gout compared to those who drink less than once a week. For women, the study indicates that more frequent alcohol consumption is associated with a moderately elevated risk of gout. The findings were published on Wednesday in the medical journal JAMA Network Open.

According to the study, higher consumption of several specific alcoholic beverages was associated with a higher risk of gout among both sexes. The sex-specific associations for total alcohol consumption may be associated with differences between men and women in the types of alcohol consumed.

"There are quite a few risk factors for gout. Some risk factors are genetic. There are some people who have high uric acid, and despite whatever they do, they have a higher risk for gout," Dr. Diane Horowitz, director of the Northwell Health Rheumatoid Arthritis Center, explained to The New York Post.

"Men have a higher risk for gout than women do. Women who are postmenopausal have a higher risk than women who are premenopausal," added Horowitz, who was not involved in the new research. "Certain dietary factors and alcohol consumption and genetics and gender are all associated with gout."

What is Gout?

According to NIH, Gout is a type of inflammatory arthritis that causes pain and swelling in your joints, usually as flares that last for a week or two, and then resolve. Gout flares often begin in your big toe or a lower limb. Gout happens when high levels of urate build up in your body over a long period of time, which can then form needle-shaped crystals in and around the joint. This leads to inflammation and arthritis of the joint. When the body makes too much urate, or removes too little, urate levels build up in the body. However, many people with high levels of serum urate will not develop gout.

UK PM Keir Starmer Signals Tax Hikes In October Budget To Rebuild Finances

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer warned Tuesday that his new government's first budget in just over two months will be "painful", asking the country to "accept short-term pain for long-term good".

Starmer, whose Labour Party won a landslide parliamentary majority on July 4, used his first major speech since then to lay the ground for the much-anticipated fiscal event on October 30.

He also used the address, from the Downing Street garden, to attack the ousted Conservatives, reiterating claims they had left a £22-billion ($29-billion) "black hole" in the public finances.

"There is a budget coming in October, and it's going to be painful," Starmer said.

"Those with the broadest shoulders should bear the heavier burden," he added, hinting at tax rises for some after October 30.

Labour has pledged not to hike taxes on "working people", which would appear to rule out raising income tax, other social security and VAT rates.

But there is growing speculation that other taxes, like capital gains, could be targeted.

Starmer insisted the UK must look beyond tinkering with taxes and that growing the economy remained the "number one mission".

But he also cautioned that his government's fiscal inheritance would not be "easily fixed".

"We're going to have to take tough decisions, I did not cater for a £22-billion black hole," he added.

Political opponents have argued that the government was aware of the country's perilous financial plight months ago and is preparing the ground for unpopular announcements.

Labour has insisted the Tories misled the public and others on the issue, including the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR).

The independent fiscal watchdog has said it is investigating the last government's spending forecasts in light of Labour's black hole claims.

In his speech, Starmer also addressed the recent anti-immigration riots sparked by the deadly Southport knife attack.

Officials have blamed far-right elements for helping to stir up the disorder, which targeted mosques and hotels housing asylum-seekers as well as police officers and other properties.

Attempting to link the disturbances to the Conservatives' legacy, the UK leader said they "didn't happen in a vacuum" and had "exposed the state of our country".

They "revealed a deeply unhealthy society... weakened by a decade of division and decline, infected by a spiral of populism which fed off cycles of failure of the last government".

"Every time they faced a difficult problem, they failed to be honest, they offered the snake oil of populism, which led to more failure," Starmer argued.

Telegram Boss To Stay In French Custody As Russia Alleges US Interference

Telegram boss Pavel Durov could be held in police custody until Wednesday after French prosecutors said they had granted extra time for questioning, while a senior ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin alleged Washington was behind his arrest.

Durov, a Russian-born billionaire, was arrested in France over the weekend as part of an investigation into crimes related to images of child sex abuse, drug trafficking and fraudulent transactions on the platform, French prosecutors said on Monday.

On Tuesday, a spokesperson for the public prosecutor said Durov's detention had been extended by up to 48 hours late on Monday.

The messaging platform, which analysts have described as a virtual battlefield, has been heavily used by both sides of the war in Ukraine and war-related news and propaganda channels around the globe.

Without providing evidence, Vyacheslav Volodin, the chairman of Russia's State Duma, the lower house of parliament, said the United States, through France, was attempting to exert control over Telegram.

"Telegram is one of the few and at the same time the largest Internet platform over which the United States has no influence," Volodin said in a post.

"On the eve of the U.S. presidential election, it is important for (President Joe) Biden to take Telegram under control."

The White House did not immediately comment on Durov's arrest.

With nearly 1 billion users, Telegram, which presents itself as a haven for free speech and political dissidents, is particularly prominent in Russia, Ukraine and the republics of the former Soviet Union.

While millions of ordinary users like the app for its easy use and range of functions, it is also widely used by far-right, anti-vax and conspiracist movements.

French President Emmanuel Macron, who is known to be an avid user of the app, has said that the arrest was "in no way a political decision".

After Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Telegram has become the main source of unfiltered - and sometimes graphic and misleading - content from both sides about the war and the politics surrounding the conflict.

But we did not know that the movie will touch 400 crores in just a week or we will get so much love from the people. It is such a happy vibe. I really pinch myself to believe this is where we have reached with the film. We knew we will do good numbers but this is unprecedented numbers."

Meanwhile, on Day 12, the horror comedy amassed ₹17 crore at the ticket window, reported Sacnilk. With this, Stree 2's total box office collection stands at ₹ 401.55 crore. It is now inching towards the ₹450-crore club. On its second Monday (August 26), the film witnessed a "29.02 percent Hindi occupancy" at the theaters, the report added. Stree 2 is the sequel to the 2018 Shraddha Kapoor-Rajkummar Rao-starrer Stree. Aparshakti Khurrana, Abhishek Banerjee, Pankaj Tripathi and Vijay Raaz also play key roles in the film.

Urban centres are performing exceptionally well, but it's the mass pockets that are truly in a league of their own. Why Trump Is Threatening To Pull Out Of Debate With Kamala Harris

The campaigns of Donald Trump and Kamala Harris clashed on Monday over next month's U.S. presidential debate, with the vice president's team seeking a return to open microphones while her Republican rival threatened to pull out entirely, suggesting the previously agreed-upon ABC network was biased.

"Why would I do the Debate against Kamala Harris on that network?" Trump, who is making his third bid for the White House, wrote in a social media post late Sunday night that also accused the network of bias. "Stay tuned!!!"

Harris spokesperson Brian Fallon said on Monday the vice president's campaign wanted the broadcaster to keep the candidates' microphones on throughout the event, not muted when their opponent was speaking as in the last presidential debate. So-called "hot mics" can help or hurt political candidates, catching off-hand comments that sometimes were not meant for the public.

"The Vice President is ready to deal with Trump's constant lies and interruptions in real-time. Trump should stop hiding behind the mute button," Fallon said in a statement.

Trump campaign senior adviser Jason Miller said in a statement they had already agreed to the same terms as CNN's June debate, which had muted microphones, adding: "We said no changes to the agreed-upon rules."

But Trump later told reporters that he preferred to have his microphone kept on, adding that he did not like it muted last time and that he was not preparing much for the face-off against his new rival.

"Doesn't matter to me. I'd rather have it, probably, on. But the agreement was that it would be the same as it was last time," Trump said.

"I'm not spending a lot of time on it. I think my whole life I've been preparing for a debate," Trump added. "You can't cram knowledge into your head, for you know, 30 years of knowledge in one week. So, you know, there's a little debate prep, but I've always done it more or less the same way."

Representatives for ABC did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Harris secured the Democratic nomination after President Joe Biden stepped aside last month, and had said they would do the Sept. 10 debate hosted by ABC News previously agreed to by Biden and Trump.

Biden had pushed for earlier debates, hoping to boost his campaign and cast a brighter light on Trump. But his own halting performance at the June 27 face-off triggered alarm within his party, with him ending his reelection bid weeks later.

Trump had floated another debate hosted by Fox News on Sept. 4, which he later said would be a televised town hall with just himself and host Sean Hannity. The Harris campaign said no.

The vice presidential candidates, Republican U.S. Senator JD Vance and Democratic Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, are scheduled to debate Oct. 1 on CBS News.

Bihar Woman Kills Daughter, Throws Body In Backyard. She Was Inspired By TV Show

Bihar Police on Monday arrested a woman on the charge of murder of her three-year-old daughter Muzaffarpur.

Police identified the accused as Kajal Kumari, who allegedly committed the crime inspired by a TV serial "Crime Patrol."

Muzaffarpur Superintendent of Police (SP) Awadesh Saroj Dixit said that the accused was involved in an illicit relationship with another person, adding that the accused desired to live with this person and she had already made up her mind to leave her husband.

"This individual had reportedly placed a condition which required Kajal Kumari to leave her daughter. It seems that illicit relationship influenced her actions related to the crime," SP Dixit said.

He said that the accused hatched a plan and slit the throat of her three-year-old daughter on August 23 and packed her dead body in a suitcase and threw it in the backyard of the house.

"We received information about an abandoned suitcase at Janki Ballabh Shastri lane in Rambagh locality under the jurisdiction of Mithanpur police station. When we opened the suitcase, we found the dead body of a three-year-old toddler. Accordingly, an FIR has been registered against unidentified persons in Mithanpur police station initially and the investigation was started," Dixit said.

He said that the district police interrogated the mother of the girl and her initial statements were not satisfactory, adding that under strict questioning, she eventually broke down and disclosed the entire sequence of events leading to the crime.

"As per her confession, the accused stabbed her daughter on the night of August 23, packed the dead body in the suitcase and threw it in the backyard of her house. She also tried to destroy the evidence including blood stains on the rooftop of the house. We have also seized the weapon used in the commission of the crime," the officer said.

"Embarrassment": Omar Abdullah's Jibe At BJP Over Seat-Sharing Fumble

National Conference chief Omar Abdullah, shortly after thrashing out what he called a "tough" seat-sharing deal with ally Congress, said he was surprised that the BJP, which prides itself on its discipline, failed to announce its candidates without a hitch.

"For them to have furniture broken in their office and almost a riot like situation was extremely unusual. But then, I'm not surprised. When you suddenly change all your senior leaders, you are going to have a problem," Mr Abdullah said.

The BJP had released a list of 44 candidates for the three-phase election to 90 assembly seats in Jammu and Kashmir, but deleted it and released a list with 15 names -- the candidates for the first phase.

The change followed a massive display of resentment from the local leaders. The list which was deleted, contained names of leaders who had switched over from the Congress, National Conference, PDP and Panthers Party.

"When you reward turncoats, you reward those who have left other parties and come and join you... Look at the embarrassment. I have never seen a situation where the party has had to withdraw its list within 10 minutes and then put out a truncated list," Mr Abdullah said.

About the challenges faced by the INDIA alliance - Congress had to fly in two central leaders, KC Venugopal and Salman Khurshid, at the eleventh hour - Mr Abdullah said both parties were new to it.

Seat sharing, for any party, is not easy, Mr Abdullah said. But for the current National Conference leaders, including himself, a pre-poll seat sharing was a first, he said, pointing out that the last time it happened was in the 1980s.

"This is the first time I have had any negotiations for a seat sharing arrangement, coupled with the fact that we haven't had assembly elections in J&K for 10 years," Mr Abdullah said. "This was never going to be easy, but all credit to the negotiators of the Congress and the National Conference, we reached where we are,' he added.

The two parties cracked the deal late in the evening - hours before the deadline for nominations of the first phase.

The National Conference will contest 51 of the 90 assembly seats, the Congress will contest 32. The parties will have a friendly contest on the five seats they disagreed on, and two seats will be left for the CPM and the Panthers Party.

Jammu and Kashmir, where elections are being held after a decade, is headed for a triangular contest between the BJP, Mehbooba Mufti's People's Democratic Party and the National Conference-Congress alliance.

In 2014, the BJP formed a ruling alliance with the PDP after the election results presented a hung house. But the alliance of the two ideologically mismatched parties was short-lived and Jammu and Kashmir came under President's Rule in 2018.

The big surprise of this election is the participation of the candidates of the banned Jamaat-e-Islami, who are contesting as Independents.

"I think it's an important development," Mr Abdullah said. "An organisation that spent the last 30-plus years telling the people of Kashmir that elections are 'haram', that they should not participate in elections, was talking about Jammu and Kashmir not being a part of India, today is willing to take the same oath on the Constitution of India that mainstream political parties have taken. This is a huge development," he said.

About his own decision to contest the assembly elections, the former Chief Minister said, "I am not getting into the powers of the chief minister and all that... Ultimately, if I believe I am a leader of the National Conference, then I must lead".

From the point of view of the assembly, he said it would be "hypocritical" or "seen as hypocritical" if he were to tell people that "I don't believe in this assembly, but you must vote".

"Whatever the flaws of this assembly, it is still better than what we have now. This assembly may not be the assembly that it was in 2018, but it is still an assembly that will speak for them that will fight for their rights. And also this is an assembly that will bring back the statehood of Jammu and Kashmir. We'll make a start from there," he added.

The 54-year-old will contest from Ganderbal.

Minor's Rapist, Now Survivor's Husband, Sentenced To 20-Year Jail

A POCSO court in Bundi on Friday convicted a man for raping a minor although he married her when she attained adulthood.

The couple now has a one-year-old child. The court also slapped a fine of Rs 80,000 and ordered the convict to pay Rs 4 lakh for the survivor's livelihood for the time he stays in jail and completes his term.

POCSO Court I of Bundi city convicted Shetan Meena (24), a resident of Mal Ki Jhopndiyan in Lakheri police station in Bundi district, to 20 years imprisonment for kidnapping and raping a 17-year-old girl in June 2022, public prosecutor at POCSO Court I, Rakesh Thakur, said.

The father of the minor survivor lodged a missing report in Lakheri police station on June 2, 2022. He suspected Shetan to be the accused in the matter.

Following this, the police carried out a search operation and rescued the minor girl after around a month. They arrested Shetan who was later released on bail, the public prosecutor said.

Shetan married the survivor in Gurugram a year after the crime in 2023 when she became an adult. The couple now has a child.

However, the court took note of the under-aged status of the girl and held Shetan guilty of abduction and repeated rape under the relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) Act, 2012.

The court awarded 20 years of imprisonment to Shetan. It also imposed a fine of Rs 80,000 upon the convict and ordered him to pay Rs 4 lakh to the survivor for her livelihood for the time his term completes in jail, he added.

Statements of 12 witnesses were recorded during the trial and 29 documents were produced before the court, Mr Thakur added.

Top Employee Of This Bank Accused Of Sexual Harassment, Court Issues Notice

The Delhi High Court on Thursday issued a notice regarding a public interest litigation (PIL) challenging the appointment of Pankaj Dwivedi as the Executive Director of Union Bank of India.

The PIL, filed by a woman who has accused Pankaj Dwivedi of sexual harassment, questions his appointment, which was made on March 27 for a three-year term.

The notice was issued by a division bench consisting of Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela.

Advocate Prashant Bhushan, representing the woman, argued that Pankaj Dwivedi's appointment as Executive Director of Union Bank of India violated regulations due to the lack of vigilance clearance.

He emphasised that this contravenes the appointment norms for public sector undertakings like banks. Mr Bhushan also noted that a chargesheet had been filed against Pankaj Dwivedi in a sexual harassment case.

It was also argued by the petitioner that Pankaj Dwivedi was previously a General Manager at Punjab & Sind Bank before joining Union Bank of India. In 2020, the Supreme Court annulled the transfer of the woman who filed the plea against Pankaj Dwivedi. She had reported irregularities and corruption involving Pankaj Dwivedi at her branch and alleged that he sexually harassed her in 2018.

The woman had raised concerns about account maintenance for liquor contractors and corruption allegations against Pankaj Dwivedi.

"Wasn't Aware Until...": Principal Of School Where 6 Students Were Harassed

Following the arrest of a teacher for the alleged harassment of students in Akola, the Principal of the school, Ravindra Samdur on Wednesday said that they were not aware of the incident until the teachers met the students after a programme of the school was over.

He said that four to five girls said they were harassed. The development comes just days after Badlapur sexual abuse case.

"There was a program in the school yesterday...After the program was over the teacher went to meet the students of class 7-8. Some 4-5 girls said that they were harassed, then we came to know about this, until then we were not aware of any such thing," the Principal of the school said.

Earlier today the police said that a school teacher was arrested in Maharashtra's Akola district on charges of harassment following complaints from six school girls.

The incident came to light after schoolgirls filed a complaint about the teacher who has been identified as Pramod Manohar Sardar. Police have recorded the statements of the victim girls.

The accused was arrested on Tuesday evening.

Superintendent of Police Akolka Bachchan Singh told ANI, "Akola Police received a complaint of molestation of six school girls by Pramod Manohar Sardar, a teacher of the Zilla Parishad School in Kajikhed. Police immediately arrested the accused teacher and recorded the statements of the victim girls."

"Cases under sections 74 and 75 of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita and POCSO Act were registered," SP Singh added.

Further investigation into the case is underway, he said.

The incident comes amid nationwide protests over the murder and alleged sexual assault of a female trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in West Bengal City of Kolkata on August 9.

In a similar incident but at Maharashtra's Badlapur, two minor girls were allegedly sexually assaulted at a school, sparking violent protests and subsequent reported police action on the protesters who had gathered on the streets demanding justice for the victims.

Maharashtra Police has arrested more than 40 people and registered an FIR against 300 people following the massive protest over the incident that led to stone-pelting, disruption of train services and lathi- -charges on Tuesday.

Indian Man Visits Harvard, Finds 'Made in Pakistan' Jacket Worth Rs 12,000

An Indian man has shared his surprise after discovering “Made in Pakistan” merchandise at Harvard University in the USA. Content creator Ishan Sharma, who has been documenting his trip to the United States on social media, mentioned that he visited the Ivy League institution to purchase some merchandise.

Upon arriving at The Harvard Shop, the official student-run merchandise store at Harvard, Sharma was first taken aback by the price and then by the label indicating where the clothing was manufactured.

The Indian YouTuber posted photos of himself wearing a Harvard jacket in the school's signature crimson and black colours. One photo clearly shows the label on the jacket, which reads "Made in Pakistan."

"Came to Harvard to buy merch. This one's Rs. 12,000! But Made in Pakistan?!" Mr Sharma wrote on X.

See the post here:

As Sharma's post gained attention on social media, many users advised him against buying the product, arguing that it wasn't worth the price. A user wrote, "Quality is really bad. I picked a few last year and 2-3 washes and they all are now good to mop the floor. Official merch."

Another user wrote, "Don't buy that stuff, it's worst. I got one with the same stuff and same design, it got lint on it after wearing the first time."

Some X users also pointed out that the Rs 12,000 was the brand price, not the manufacturing cost.

"Why do we always want to convert everything into INR. It's just around 145$. When you get hired in the US you'll demand like $100,000 a year, at that moment you won't convert it to INR. Btw! iPhone is around 150-200$ and made in China. You're paying brand value, not manufacturing price," a user wrote.

In a separate post, Mr Sharma described his visit to Harvard University as "epic." "I visited the libraries, the John Harvard statue, the Harvard Shop, the Harvard Yard and Square, and even interacted with a few students there. Love the vibe of the whole place. It's like a little town of all red buildings!" he said, adding that it was a dream college for him as a 17-year-old watching documentaries and films such as The Social Network.

Senior Bank Staffer Falls Prey To Sextortion, Loses Rs 2.5 Lakh: Cops

A 26-year-old senior executive of a private bank, who is also the son of a police personnel, coughed up Rs 2.5 lakh after he was caught in sextortion, police said on Monday.

The complainant lost the money in the early hours of Thursday (August 15) when he was at his home in Mumbai's Prabhadevi area.

In his complaint, the bank executive said he received a friend request from a woman, who identified herself as Kriti Sharma, on Instagram around 1 am. He accepted the request and the two started chatting, said an official citing the FIR.

The complainant shared his mobile number with the woman, who then made a WhatsApp video call to him. The woman on the other side was naked and she urged him to take off his clothes, as per the FIR.

The bank executive told police he later learnt that the woman had recorded the video call without his knowledge.

Around 1.20 am, he received his video from the same number, with the woman threatening to share it with his Instagram contacts and on social media if he didn't pay her money.

The woman promised to delete the video if the complainant paid Rs 1 lakh. After he complied, she made more demands, eventually extracting Rs 2.5 lakh through five UPI transactions, the official said.

Realising that he was trapped and duped, the bank executive approached the Dadar police and filed a complaint, the official said.

Police have registered a case under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology Act, the official said, adding that a probe is underway.
