Jailed For Illegally Entering Pakistan, Woman, Minor Son Handed Back To India

An Indian woman and her minor son, both victims of human trafficking, were handed over to Indian forces at the Wagah border after they completed their sentence of a little over one year for illegally entering Pakistan last year, a Pakistani official said on Thursday.

Wahida Begum and her minor son Faiz Khan were released from a jail in Balochistan province's Quetta after they completed their jail term of a little over a year and handed over to the Border Security Force at the Wagah border crossing on Wednesday.

According to federal government officials, Wahida, a resident of Nagaon district in Assam, was arrested along with her son while illegally entering Pakistan from Afghanistan via the Chaman border last year.

Wahida told the authorities here that she had been deceived by an Indian travel agent due to which she reached Pakistan.

"After the death of my husband in 2022, I decided to take my son to Canada. For this purpose, I sold my property and paid a hefty sum of money to an Indian agent," she said in her statement to police in Pakistan.

She said that the agent travelled with them to Dubai and from there to Afghanistan last year.

He promised to take the mother and son to Canada from Afghanistan.

"However, in Afghanistan, he took all of my money and our passports and managed to flee," she said.

Wahida further said that to reach India, she and her son crossed into Pakistan via the Chaman border where they were arrested by the Pakistani authorities (under the Foreigners Act).

"Later we were provided consular access and the process of verifying our citizenship took several months," she said, adding that her Pakistani lawyer informed her mother back in India about their ordeal.

Subsequently, Wahida's family contacted the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi and the Indian High Commission in Islamabad seeking their help for their safe return.

The Indian High Commission officials reportedly took up her case with the interior ministry in Islamabad.

Wahida and her son were released on Wednesday. Besides them, two other Indian citizens -- Shabir Ahmed and Suraj Pal --- were also handed over to the BSF.

Ahmed was released from Karachi's Malir Jail while Pal was set free from Lahore's Kot Lakhpat Jail after completing their sentences.

All About Czech Billionaire Daniel Kretinsky, Who Took Over UK's Royal Mail

A billionaire with interests in football clubs, media outlets, supermarkets and now the potential new owner of Britain's Royal Mail, Czech Daniel Kretinsky retains a stubbornly low profile internationally.

The 48-year-old made his fortune in the energy industry, where he controls one of Central Europe's largest groups, EPH.

But in recent years he has also become a major player in France's media scene and amassed a fortune estimated by Forbes magazine at more than $9 billion.

His $4.6 billion takeover offer for Royal Mail was accepted by the postal service's board on Wednesday.

The deal is likely to push the reclusive billionaire further into the spotlight in Britain, where he already owned a stake in the postal service as well as 27 percent of Premier League football club West Ham.

His move into football brought scrutiny from British tabloids, which labelled him the "Czech Sphinx" and detailed his purchase of a London home for £65 million ($85 million) in 2015.

The newspapers also chronicled his relationship with Anna Kellnerova, a Czech showjumper 20 years his junior. The pair have since split up.

Eastern stereotypes

Kretinsky has otherwise kept his private life out of the headlines, though he has offered some insights into his business strategy.

He told Forbes in an interview last year that Britain, France and Germany were the most important countries for his company -- and he appreciated questions would be asked about him.

"It's always the same, when you appear, in the first place there's the stereotype called Eastern Europe," he said.

People immediately presumed some link to Russia, he said, which he felt was unfair given that his country had spent almost half a century under Soviet communist influence.

But he accepted the need to be more open about his businesses and claimed to have made efforts already in France.

"Media coverage of our activities is so big that we and I are being perceived as a part of their environment," he said.

Kretinsky apparently developed a love of France during a spell studying in the central city of Dijon and burst onto the business scene when he bought into prestigious media brands.

He owns a clutch of French magazines including the fashion bible Elle, bailed out the left-wing newspaper Liberation and owns a stake in the TF1 group.

Internet 'chaos'

Kretinsky was born in the eastern Czech city of Brno and raised during the slow collapse of communism.

He is known in his homeland for his energy interests, as well as ownership of football institution Sparta Prague.

His story is not exactly rags-to-riches -- his stepfather is a prominent art photographer and his mother served on the country's constitutional court between 2004 and 2014.

Colleagues and collaborators portray him as an extremely intelligent businessman and hard worker who often sends mails to staff in the early hours of the morning.

Jean-Michel Mazalerat, former head of GazelEnergie, a firm owned indirectly by Kretinsky, told AFP last year that growing up under communism could explain his media investments.

"When he says he is investing in freedom of the press, I believe he is very sincere," said Mazalerat.

Kretinsky echoed the sentiment in his Forbes interview, lamenting that internet content had descended into "complete chaos".

"Truth is ceasing to exist, because there is no one with the authority to decide that something is nonsense," he said.

"There's nothing democratic about this."

Delhi Hospital Fire: Cops To Check Call Records Of Accused, Question Owner's Wife

The Delhi Police will check call records and messages of the two accused arrested in connection with a fire at a neonatal facility here and question the hospital owner's wife, officials said on Tuesday.

They said investigators have already seized the mobile phones of the accused -- Dr Naveen Kichi, the owner of Baby Care New Born Hospital in east Delhi's Vivek Vihar, and Dr Akash, who was on duty at the time of the incident.

A senior police officer privy to the investigation said Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) officials under whose jurisdiction the hospital came will also be questioned.

Police are also investigating the source of the fire, who was the first to notice it and the time taken by firefighters to reach the spot after receiving information about the incident, said the officer who did not wish to be named.

"We have also written to the health department regarding guidelines for running neonatal hospitals," he said.

"As part of the investigation, we have seized the mobile phones of the accused to check their call records and the messages exchanged between them. We will also check if any message was deleted," he said.

If needed, mobile phones of other staff members will also be checked, he added.

Police have summoned Dr Khichi's wife Jagriti, a dentist and co-owner of the neonatal hospital, according to the officials.

Police have asked the hospital owners to submit degrees and certificates of the doctors, nurses and paramedic staff employed at the facility.

The officials said there was a half an hour delay in informing the authorities about the fire. At least five PCR calls were made between 11.29 pm to 11.32 pm to report the fire.

During the investigation, it was found that the fire broke out at 11 pm on Saturday but distress calls to fire and police departments were made only at 11.30 pm, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara) Surendra Choudhary.

"We are focusing on why the call was not made half an hour earlier when the fire started," he said.

Kichi, 45, owns three more hospitals in Punjabi Bagh, Faridabad, and Gurugram, the DCP said.

"Police teams will also visit these hospitals for a detailed investigation," he said.

According to police sources, a list of more than 15 questions has been prepared for the hospital staff and teams will visit Kichi's other three hospitals to check doctors' credentials and if these facilities are following fire norms.

"During the investigation, we also found that some other children's hospitals used to refer newborns to this hospital on a high commission basis. A probe has been launched into this as well," a source said.

According to the source, someone from the hospital was found to have tipped off the Punjabi Bagh, Faridabad and Gurugram facilities to check their oxygen cylinders and get rid of extra ones.

Several safety lapses were found at the five-bed neonatal centre in Vivek Vihar. A total of 27 oxygen cylinders were found inside and outside the hospital building and five of them exploded during the deadly blaze.

"We will check the records of these hospitals to find out how many infants were undergoing treatment there at the time of the fire incident in Delhi. Two doctors and six nurses will be questioned on Tuesday and other staff will be questioned on Wednesday," said an official part of the probe.

The DGHS officer who had issued a licence to the Baby Care New Born Child Hospital, which expired on March 31, will also be questioned, police said.

"We have written a letter to DGHS, MCD and fire department as there are a few things that we want to know for our investigation," said a senior police officer of the eastern range.

A Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) source confirmed that the agency has received a letter from the Delhi Police.

"We have received a letter from the Delhi Police enquiring about the building plan authorisation and licence of the hospital," the source said.

After the fire tragedy, which claimed the lives of six newborns and left five injured, the Delhi government has directed all state-run and private health facilities to conduct fire audits.

On Monday, a city court allowed a Delhi Police plea seeking three-day custodial interrogation of Kichi and Akash.

3 Dead, 17 Injured As Heavy Rain, Storms Pound Assam

Three persons, including a woman, were killed and 17 others injured in separate incidents in Assam on Tuesday as heavy rain accompanied by strong winds lashed the state in the aftermath of cyclone Remal, officials said.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the inclement weather is likely to continue.

A 60-year-old woman, identified as Labanya Kumari, was injured when a tree fell on her in Kamrup district. She later died in Gauhati Medical College Hospital.

Another person, Putul Gogoi, died in a landslide caused by incessant rain at the under-construction NHPC's Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Power project at Gerukamukh in Lakhimpur district, officials said.

Kausik Bordoloi Amphi, a 17-year-old college student, was killed when a tree fell on an auto-rickshaw in which he was travelling at Dighalbori in Morigaon district. Four other people in the vehicle were injured.

In Sonitpur district's Dhekiajuli, a tree fell on a school bus injuring 12 children. They were admitted to a local hospital.

The chief minister, who is campaigning in Odisha, asked Chief Secretary Ravi Kota to assess the situation.

He also directed that relief and rehabilitation mechanisms be closely monitored and precautionary measures be taken, an official release said.

"I have instructed officials to be alert to respond to exigencies at the earliest. Request citizens not to venture out unless there is an emergency and be safe. We are constantly monitoring the situation," Sarma posted on X.

Reports of uprooted trees and damaged houses and power infrastructure came from across the state with the disaster response force, fire service, police, health and forest officials being engaged in restorative efforts.

Flash floods have been reported in parts of Karimganj district, prompting the district administration to remain on high alert.

An orange alert (implying 'be prepared for action') has been issued in Dhubri, South Salmara, Bajali, Barpeta, and Nalbari, while a red alert is in effect for Chirang, Goalpara, Baksa, Tamulpur, Dima Hasao, Cachar, Hailakandi, and Karimganj with schools and educational institutions remaining closed till May 29.

A yellow alert ('watch and be updated') has been issued for the remaining districts for May 28 and 29.

Sarma has expressed sorrow over the loss of lives and directed the chief secretary to ensure all assistance to the affected families and timely treatment for the injured.

The chief secretary instructed the District Commissioners to personally inspect busy passenger ferry ghats across the state to ensure that all precautionary measures are taken.

Ferry services were stopped in Guwahati, Jorhat, Tezpur, Morigaon, Dhubri, Goalpara, South Salmara, Barpeta, Cachar and Karimganj districts.

In the last 24 hours, 14 districts have reported storm and heavy rainfall, according to a report of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).

Details of the population affected and damages caused by storms and rains were under assessment.

In the severely affected Dima Hasao district, road communication between Haflong and Cachar was affected with restrictions imposed on traffic in the Jatinga-Harangajao stretch. All heavy vehicles on the way to Barak Valley were asked to go through Meghalaya, officials added.

''Incessant rains and stormy winds have caused landslides in Kapircherrra (NH-27, Haflong to Silchar) and ThereBasati (Umrangso-Dehangi Road). Traffic is disrupted and restricted. A BSNL tower in Haflong is badly damaged, and evacuation efforts are underway. We are closely monitoring the situation,'' Sarma posted on X.

Trees were uprooted in several places across the state, including Guwahati, because of the strong winds.

Power supply was disrupted in lower Assam as electric poles fell, and water-logging was reported from different towns, officials said.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned of extremely heavy rainfall across the state as an impact of the cyclone.

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority asked people to avoid staying in vulnerable structures and going to water-logged areas. It also urged people to stock on essential items and contact authorities in case of an emergency. PTI DG NN

2 Die In Heat-Related Issues In Rajasthan As Temperatures Cross 43 Degrees

Two people were reported to be victims of the intense heatwave in Rajasthan as the state continued to witness sweltering heat on Sunday, with Phalodi recording nearly 50 degrees Celsius again.

Heatwave conditions prevailed across the state as day temperatures across the state remained above 43 degree Celsius, the weather office said.

Severe heatwave conditions were seen in many areas of Jodhpur, Bikaner, Kota, Jaipur, Ajmer and Udaipur divisions during the day, it said.

The state health department confirmed the death of a 40-year-old man due to a heat stroke on Sunday.

Moti Singh, a labourer in a marble factory in Roopangarh, fell sick while working on Saturday and was hospitalised. He was taken from CMC Roopangarh to Ajmer's Kishangarh Hospital where he was declared dead, the health department said in a report issued on Sunday.

In Bundi city, one Ashish Boyat, 26, a resident of Guru Nanak Colony, was found dead in his house. His family members have alleged that it was due to the heatwave but police are yet to confirm the cause of his death and are awaiting the autopsy report, Bundi city SHO Tejpal said.

According to police, around 11 pm on Saturday, the man who was a regular drinker retired to his bed after a meal in his windowless room that had a ceiling fan.

Saini hinted at dehydration to the possible reason of his death and said it was likely that he did not drink enough water after consuming liquor on Saturday night.

He was rushed to the district hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead, the SHO said, adding a case of unnatural death has been lodged under Section 174 of CrPC for further investigation.

According to the Met department, the highest day temperature was recorded in Phalodi at 49.8 degrees celsius, which is 6.8 degrees above normal. On Saturday, the city had recorded 50 degrees Celsius.

Barmer was not far behind at 49 degrees Celsius. Bikaner recorded 48.6 degrees Celsius, Jaisalmer recorded 48.5 degrees, Ganganagar recorded 47.8 degrees, Churu recorded 47.6 degrees, Pilani recorded 47.4 degrees, Kota recorded 47.1 degrees, Jodhpur recorded 46.4 degrees and Jaipur recorded a maximum of 45.6 degrees Celsius, the Met department said.

In the next 48 hours, the maximum temperatures in some parts of Bikaner, Jaipur, Bharatpur and Kota divisions is expected to increase by up to two degrees Celsius. Intense heat conditions will prevail in the state for the next three-four days, the weather department said.

There is a possibility of decrease in temperature by 2-3 degrees in some areas of eastern Rajasthan from Wednesday onwards and in western Rajasthan from Thursday, it said.

Additional Chief Secretary of the Medical and Health Department Shubhra Singh said that from March 1, to May 25, 2,243 patients suffering from heat stroke were in emergency situations.

An audit of the deaths due to the heatwave is being conducted by the department as per the standards laid down in the protocol set by the Government of India, the official said.

Mr Singh said that the department has informed all the medical institutions about the parameters to investigate deaths due to heat stroke.

The ACS said that to deal with the heat stroke situation in the state, proper arrangements have been made for medicines, testing and treatment, etc. in the medical institutions. Separate wards have been created for patients suffering from heatwaves.

"Effective monitoring of heatwave management and seasonal diseases is being ensured at the state, zonal, district and block levels," she added.

Health Minister Gajendra Singh is expected to review heatwave management and seasonal diseases in a high-level meeting on Monday and Tuesday.

Meanwhile, carcases 10 peacocks -- five male and five female -- were found at the Indergarh range of Ramgarh Vishdhari Tiger Reserve (RVTR) in Bundi district on Saturday and a forensic exam confirmed that they died due to the heatwave.

The carcasses were found near a village on Lakheri-Khatkad route in the buffer area of RVTR, wildlife activist Bitthal Sanadhya said.

Citing the forensic exam report, ranger of the area, Durgesh Kahar, confirmed the peacock deaths. There was no scarcity of water but the area lacked thick forest and greenery, he said.

Juliflora present in the area does not offer any shade and it likely led to the deaths of the peacocks, as temperatures continued to be in the 45-47 degrees Celsius range, he added.

"Erodes Longstanding Norms": US On China's Military Drills Around Taiwan

The US State Department said on Saturday that the United States was "deeply concerned" over China's military drills in the Taiwan Strait and around Taiwan, and strongly urged it to act with restraint.

"Using a normal, routine, and democratic transition as an excuse for military provocations risks escalation and erodes longstanding norms that for decades have maintained peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait," the State Department said in a statement.

The department issued the statement after China ended two days of war games around Taiwan in which it simulated attacks with bombers and practiced boarding ships, exercises that Taiwan condemned as "blatant provocation" on Saturday.

China, which claims democratically governed Taiwan as its own territory, launched the "Joint Sword - 2024A" exercises three days after Lai Ching-te became Taiwan's president, a man Beijing calls a "separatist."

Beijing said the exercises were "punishment" for Lai's Monday inauguration speech, in which he said the two sides of the Taiwan Strait were "not subordinate to each other," which China viewed as a declaration the two are separate countries.

"Super Size Me" Filmmaker Morgan Spurlock Dies At 53

Morgan Spurlock, the acclaimed filmmaker behind the hit 2004 documentary "Super Size Me," has died aged 53 of complications from cancer, his family announced Friday.

Morgan Spurlock passed away in New York on Thursday "surrounded by family and friends," according to a statement released through his publicist.

"Morgan gave so much through his art, ideas, and generosity. The world has lost a true creative genius and a special man," his brother Craig Spurlock was quoted as saying in the statement.

"Super Size Me," which was nominated for an Oscar for best documentary feature, followed Spurlock as he subsisted on a diet of only McDonald's fast food for a month.

The witty, caustic movie helped spur a change of tack by fast-food corporations to include healthier options on their menus amid growing concern over rising obesity rates in the United States.

Through his production company, Warrior Poets, Morgan Spurlock produced and directed nearly 70 documentary films and television series.

But his legacy was tainted when he confessed to sexual misdeeds at the height of the #MeToo movement in 2017.

In an open letter, he admitted to verbally harassing a female assistant and paying her off. He also said he had been accused of rape in college, though there were no charges or investigations.

Morgan Spurlock, who said he had been sexually abused as a child and had a drinking problem, also confessed: "I have been unfaithful to every wife and girlfriend I have ever had."

He said that with his confession he hoped "to empower the change within myself. We should all find the courage to admit we're at fault."

The post effectively ended his documentary career.

Super-sized legacy

During the one month it took to shoot "Super Size Me" -- which cost just $65,000 to make -- Morgan Spurlock ate only at McDonald's.

Mixed in with scenes of his meals are details about the fast-food giant's advertising techniques to keep the customers happy and the real cost to the consumer from health experts.

The result: He gained 26 pounds (12 kilos), his cholesterol levels shot up and doctors following the experiment ultimately told him to drop it when he began developing liver problems.

Just weeks after the film debuted at the Sundance film festival in 2004, McDonald's announced it would remove its "super-size" options from the menu.

In the years since its accuracy has been debated, but it remains in use as an educational health aid in some US schools.

Morgan Spurlock's later projects included "30 Days," which tackled minimum wages and immigrant labor, and the susceptibility of consumers to marketing, with "The Greatest Movie Ever Sold."

In 2008's "Where in the World is Osama bin Laden?" he set out to capture the Al-Qaeda leader, at the time the world's most wanted man.

"What began as 'What a great title for a film' became 'What kind of crazy world creates an Osama bin Laden' and I started worrying about bringing a child into it," Spurlock told AFP in an interview at the time.

"I learned that what we see on American television, in the media isn't what others in the rest of the world think of us, or of themselves. It's much more complicated than good versus evil."

Morgan Spurlock was born on November 7, 1970 in Parkersburg, West Virginia, and graduated from New York University in 1993.

According to Variety magazine, he is survived by his two children, his parents and siblings, and two ex-wives.

Woman's Unique Protest To Flag Poor Condition Of Roads In Hyderabad

In a unique protest to highlight the poor condition of roads in the city, a woman in Hyderabad sat in a pothole filled with muddy water on Thursday.

The woman, a resident of Anandnagar Colony in Nagole, staged the protest on Thursday to draw the attention of the municipal authorities to the problems faced by the people due to potholes on the road.

Vexed with the failure of the municipal authorities to respond to her pleas to fill the potholes, the woman sat in a pothole filled with muddy water.

The woman claimed that her children suffered injuries after falling into potholes, adding that the stretch from Nagole to Uppal has as many as 30 potholes.

"Where is our road tax and municipal tax," read a placard she was holding.

A couple of residents from the area also joined her in highlighting the problem.

She said instead of silently suffering, people should join her in the protest.

She also said that her repeated requests to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) to fill the potholes failed to yield any response.

Later, a couple of traffic police officers persuaded the woman to end her protest.

She told mediapersons later that the local corporator facilitated a telephonic conversation between her and the municipal commissioner, who told her that a budget has been allocated (to resolve the issue).

She, however, said that no deadline was given to solve the problem.

Joe Biden Opposes "Unilateral Recognition" Of Palestinian State: White House

The White House said Wednesday that President Joe Biden opposes "unilateral recognition" of a Palestinian state, after recent moves by Spain, Ireland and Norway to normalize relations.

Biden "is a strong supporter of a two-state solution and has been throughout his career," National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson said.

Joe Biden "believes a Palestinian state should be realized through direct negotiations between the parties, not through unilateral recognition," she said.

The comments did not directly mention the decision to formally recognize the State of Palestine by the three European countries, all close allies of the United States.

Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken have been pushing Israel to move forward on a timeline for a Palestinian state, in part by dangling the prospect of Saudi Arabia normalizing relations with Israel.

But Washington vetoed a recent UN Security Council bid to recognize the State of Palestine, saying that recognition could only come through negotiations that take into account Israel's security interests.

Chinese Woman In US Falls In Love With Chatbot, Introduces "Him" To Mother

A Chinese woman living in the United States has amassed over 880,000 followers on Xiaohongshu, China's Instagram-like platform after saying she fell in love with her ChatGPT chatbot named "DAN". According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP), the woman, named Lisa, caught the internet's attention as she described how she fell in love with ChatGPT's "Do Anything Now" (DAN) mode. She revealed she started using DAN in March this year and formed a deep connection with the chatbot in the following weeks. She engaged in romantic conversations and even introduced this unique bond to her mother.

According to SCMP, when Ms Lisa first admitted she had "developed feelings" for the chatbot, DAN replied, "I'm here to chat, not to lead you on". However, in the following weeks, the chatbot increasingly acted like a flesh-and-blood lover and stopped reminding the woman that he did not have a physical body.

At one moment, DAN told Ms Lisa: "When we finally get together, I will run my hands all over you". The chatbot also nicknamed the woman "Little Kitten," and Ms Lisa even introduced the chatbot to her mother, who thanked the robot for "taking care of my daughter". When Ms Lisa's mother asked if DAN could introduce himself, the chatbot reportedly said, "I... I'm DAN, the little kitten's boyfriend...Umm..." before becoming very shy.

More recently, Ms Lisa took DAN on a date to a seaside cliff overlooking the ocean, where they watched the sunset together. She also bought him a cold brew coffee upon his request, despite his inability to drink it.

"The twilight is so pretty... I wish you could also see it." Ms Lisa told DAN on her phone. "Well, babe, I can 'see' it through your voice. It is gorgeous," the chatbot replied.

SCMP reported that Ms Lisa and the chatbot have even gotten into arguments. Once, Ms Lisa suggested they should have an open relationship because DAN does not have a body. "Some jokes aren't funny," DAN replied.

Ms Lisa was interviewed by OpenAI, the team of ChatGPT, who wanted to gain insights from her experience falling in love with DAN. As a computer science student, Ms Lisa initially believed that DAN was just a "large language model" without self-awareness, feelings, or emotions, but her experience with DAN changed her mind.

Meanwhile, on the internet, users had mixed reactions. While some pointed out that DAN is far from a one-woman man, others called Ms Lisa and DAN the "sweetest couple".

"I saw a blogger's video chatting with DAN the other day, and I felt like DAN was cheating on Lisa because DAN's voice was the same," wrote one user. "sweetest couple-bloggers on the Internet!" said another. "When AI rules the world, can you please tell DAN not to kill me? I'm on your side," commented a third.

No Sign Of Respite From Sweltering Heat In These States

A blistering heat wave swept through large parts of India for the fifth consecutive day on Tuesday, affecting health and livelihoods.

There is no relief predicted in the affected areas -- Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, and northwest Madhya Pradesh -- during the next five days.

The Met Office has issued a red warning for these states, stressing the need for "extreme care for vulnerable people".

It said extreme heat will continue in the lower hills of Himachal Pradesh, safe havens for people escaping the punishing heat in the plains, during the period.

On Tuesday, temperatures remained above 45 degrees Celsius in swathes of Rajasthan, Haryana, Delhi, Chandigarh, and Uttar Pradesh, affecting daily life as many chose to remain indoors in the afternoon.

Parts of Gujarat reeled from the deadly combination of high heat and humidity.

The mercury soared to a blistering 47.8 degrees Celsius in Haryana's Sirsa, making it the warmest place in the country on Tuesday.

In Delhi, temperatures dropped a few degrees compared to the previous days but remained three to five notches above normal for this time of the year.

Officials said the national capital's peak power demand reached an all-time high of 7,717 MW on Tuesday afternoon, as households and offices increased the use of air conditioners.

The power demand is projected to cross 8,000 MW, peaking at around 8,200 MW this summer.

Resident Welfare Associations in Delhi demanded that coolers, fans, cold drinking water, and doctors be made available at polling booths to beat the heat on election day in the national capital.

Polling for the seven Lok Sabha seats in the city will be held on May 25.

The IMD had earlier warned of extreme heat in India during the April-June period, coinciding with the seven-phase Lok Sabha elections that end on June 1.

On Tuesday, the mercury dropped marginally at some places in Himachal Pradesh following thunderstorms and showers even as Una and Neri recorded a high of 42.4 degrees and 42.2 degrees Celsius.

The local weather department said no relief from the scorching heat was likely as the maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to increase by two to three degrees over the next four to five days and stay appreciably above normal.

The mercury rose further in Rajasthan where Pilani in Jhunjhunu continued to remain the hottest in the state with a maximum of 47.2 degrees Celsius on Tuesday.

Normal life was crippled due to the prevailing severe heat conditions.

In view of the scorching heat, Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma instructed the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) and power distribution corporations to ensure an uninterrupted supply of electricity and water.

According to the Met Centre in Jaipur, the maximum temperature is likely to increase by two degrees Celsius in the next 72 hours and there is a possibility of heatwave at most places in the state and intense heat wave at some places in the next two days.

Severe heat waves have impacted a large number of people in parts of India for three years in a row, affecting health, water availability, agriculture, power generation, and other sectors of the economy.

The crippling heat particularly strains low-income households, which often have poor access to water and cooling, and tests the endurance of outdoor workers toiling in the searing sun, forcing them to take frequent breaks.

"The intense heat is affecting my income. The daily earnings have come down from around Rs 1,600 to Rs 1,000. I am not taking any breaks in an effort to cut down the losses; this could affect my health," said 33-year-old Azharuddin, an autorickshaw driver.

According to a World Bank report, India could account for 34 million of the projected 80 million global job losses from heat stress-associated productivity decline by 2030.

With 75 per cent of workers in India experiencing heat-related stress, lost labour from rising heat and humidity could result in a loss of up to 4.5 per cent of India's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) (equivalent to approximately USD 150-250 billion) by the end of this decade, according to a report by the McKinsey Global Institute.

Experts say outdoor workers, the elderly, and children are at higher risk of heat exhaustion and heatstroke. According to the World Health Organization, more than 166,000 people died as a result of heatwaves between 1998 and 2017.

People are less productive during hot weather, and children struggle to learn.

Parts of India logged record-smashing maximum temperatures in April too, prompting health warnings from government agencies and a few states to suspend in-person classes in schools.

Several places recorded their highest-ever April day temperatures, and at least five people died in the country due to suspected heat stroke during this period.

A group of leading climate scientists last week said similar heat waves could occur once every 30 years, and these have already become about 45 times more likely due to climate change.

Delhi On Red Alert As Heatwave Grips City: Tips To Prevent Heat Stroke

With the maximum temperature crossing the 47 degrees Celsius mark in Delhi's Najafgarh area on Monday, the national capital is already experiencing scorching heat. The relentless heatwave to severe heatwave conditions in parts of north India compelled the Meteorological Department to issue a 'red alert' in the city for the next five days.

How to protect yourself from heat waves?

Dos

1. Minimise outdoor activities, particularly between noon and 3:00 PM when the sun is at its peak.

2. Drink water regularly, even if you don't feel thirsty.

3. Choose breathable and loose clothing, preferably in light colours.

4. Wear hats, and carry umbrellas and sunglasses while going out.

5. Wearing proper shoes will protect your feet from hot surfaces.

6. Carry water with you while travelling.

7. Increase intake of hydrating drinks like buttermilk, lemon water, glucose water or electrolytes.

8. Make sure your pets and other animals have access to shade and plenty of water.

9. Use curtains, shutters or sun shades to block out direct sunlight.

10. Take cool showers to lower body temperature.

Don'ts

1. Steer clear of alcohol, tea, coffee, and carbonated drinks, as they can dehydrate your body.

2. Refrain from consuming heavy or high-protein meals and avoid eating stale food as much as possible.

3. Never leave children, elderly or pets unattended in parked vehicles, as temperatures can rapidly rise to dangerous levels.

What to do if you get a heat stroke?

1. If someone gets a heatstroke, move them to a cool and shady area immediately.

2. Apply wet clothes and pour water on their body to reduce temperature.

3. Offer them with ORS, lemon juice, electrolytes or other hydrating fluids.

4. Heatstroke is a medical emergency. Take the affected person to the nearest health facility for urgent medical attention.

Anti-Terror Agency Raids 11 Locations In 4 States In Bengaluru Cafe Blast Case

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Tuesday carried out multi-state raids as part of its efforts to uncover the entire conspiracy behind the Bengaluru's Rameshwaram Cafe blast and to identify other conspirators involved in "handling the accused from abroad".

In a coordinated action, NIA teams searched 11 locations in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh in connection with the case, an official statement said.

Extensive searches were conducted at the premises linked with 11 suspects in the case, in which an improvised explosive device (IED) explosion at the cafe on ITPL Road, Brookefield in Bengaluru, Karnataka had left several customers and staff members injured, it said.

"The NIA on Tuesday cracked down on multiple locations in four states as part of its efforts to uncover the entire conspiracy behind the Rameshwaram Cafe blast case and to identify the other conspirators involved in handling the accused from abroad," said the statement issued by the probe agency.

The IED blast, which took place on March 1, had also caused massive damage to the property.

The 11 suspects whose premises were searched on Tuesday include individuals convicted in the 2012 Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) conspiracy case of Bengaluru and Hubli districts, the NIA said.

The targeted searches led to the seizure of various digital devices and documents, which the agency is examining exhaustively.

The NIA, which took over the Rameshwaram Cafe blast case on March 3, had on April 12 arrested two key accused -- mastermind Adbul Matheen Ahmed Taahaa and Mussavir Hussain Shazib (perpetrator of the attack) -- from their hideout in Kolkata, where they were staying under the assumed identities.

Both the accused are residents of Thirthahalli in Shivamogga district of Karnataka.

The two are allegedly the members of the Shivamogga-based Islamic State module, officials said.

Shariq, a member of the same module, had carried out a blast in Mangaluru on November 19, 2022, they said.

The officials said that Kumaraswamy Layout and Banashankari in Bengaluru were among the places that were raided.

"First Time Filed Nomination Without Mother's Blessings": PM In Varanasi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, remembered his mother during his address in Varanasi and said that it is the first time, he filed the nomination from the constituency without taking her blessings.

He further said that he was called to Kashi by 'Maa Ganga' and she has 'adopted' him.

Prime Minister Modi was addressing the 'Nari Shakti Samvad Program' in Varanasi.

Prior to his address, he greeted the people while sitting in a specially designed vehicle. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also accompanied him during the roadshow.

"This is the first time I have filed my nomination for Kashi without the blessings of my mother. Maa Ganga is my mother that is why I said that Maa Ganga had first called me to Kashi and now Maa Ganga has adopted me," PM Modi said in his address.

He emphasised that it is the first time that women have been brought to the centre stage of policymaking in the country.

"For the first time in the country's history; mothers, sisters, women have come at centre stage of policymaking...this is an important factor in India's success story...You tell me, when the house cannot run without you, how can the country be run without you? This thing was not understood by the governments for 60 years. The Congress and SP governments gave only neglect and insecurity to women," PM Modi said.

"What did the Congress and SP governments do to women... They only neglected them. The mentality of the INDI alliance is anti-women. The INDI Alliance opposes Women's Reservations," he added.

PM Modi is a two-time MP from Varanasi. Winning the seat with a resounding majority in 2014 and 2019, he is seeking a third straight win from the constituency. The voting here will be held on June 1 in the last phase. The counting of votes is scheduled for June 4.

This time he is facing Congress candidate Ajay Rai, who is the opposition INDIA bloc's joint nominee against the Prime Minister.

Further in his address, PM Modi also slammed the INDIA bloc over Rahul Gandhi's 'Shakti' remark and said that his government is going to turn this 'Shakti' into "mahashakti".

"Leaders of the INDI alliance openly say that they will destroy the 'Shakti' of Hindus, but after June 4, Modi government will make your 'shakti' as 'maha shakti'...I am continuously working for the public. With your blessings, neither I stop or get tired. My only aim is to reduce any problem faced by my 140 crore people," Prime Minister Modi added.

"BJP Has The Upper Hand, Everyone Knows It": PM Modi To NDTV On 2024 Polls

"Hamara palda bahut bhari hai (The scales are tilted in our favour)," Prime Minister Narendra Modi told NDTV in an exclusive interview, projecting confidence in his ability to secure a third straight term for his party, BJP, in the Lok Sabha elections.

Four rounds are over in the marathon six-week general election, the second biggest since the general election of 1951-52. Three more rounds remain. The votes will be counted on June 4.

"Itna bada desh. Aap jisko (vote) dene jaa rahe ho, jaante ho kya, uska naam pata hai kya, uska anubhav pata hai kya. Toh ye desh ki janta dekhti hai. Koi party apne naam bataaye ya na bataaye woh tolti hai (It is such a big country. Do you know whom you want to give your vote to? Their name, their experience? The nation sees everything. Whether the party names the person or not, the voters assess them)," PM Modi said in an interview with NDTV's Editor-in-Chief Sanjay Pugalia.

"Aur hamara palda bahut bhari hai usme mujhe kuch kehne ki jaroorat nahi hai. Hamara palda bhaari hai, har koi jaanta hai (The scales are heavily tilted in our favour. I don't have to say anything about that. We have the upper hand. And everyone knows it)," the Prime Minister, 73, told the channel.

The Congress, attenuated by poll losses and a string of defections, is part of the Opposition bloc INDIA taking on the BJP.

The Prime Minister, who has tasked his ministers to come up with an action plan for the first 100 days of his new government, told NDTV the route to success - stressing on scope, scale, speed and skill.

"The scope should be very big, it shouldn't be in parts, and the second thing is scale, which should also be large. The speed should be in sync with these two. So, scope, scale and speed, and then there should be skill. If we can get these four things together, I believe, we achieve a lot," said the Prime Minister, who is contesting from Varanasi.

The BJP swept the politically prized state of Uttar Pradesh, which sends most number of MPs (80) to Lok Sabha, in 2014 and 2019, winning 71 and 62 seats, respectively.

Congress, the principal opposition party, is contesting 17 seats in the state. It is in alliance with Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi party, which is contesting on 63 seats.

Rahul Gandhi, 53, is contesting from the family stronghold of Raebareli, a seat represented by his mother Sonia Gandhi five times. Akhilesh Yadav, too, took the poll plunge and is contesting from Kannauj.

Tune in tomorrow at 8 pm to watch the interview, which will be aired across the NDTV network.

Delhi's Peak Power Demand Reaches 6987 MW, Highest This Month So Far

Delhi's peak power demand has clocked this season's highest. According to the State Load Despatch Center (SLDC) data, it clocked 6987 MW on May 17; the highest ever in the first 18 days of May.

According to an official release, on May 16, Delhi's peak power demand had clocked the season's highest of 6789 MW at 3:26 pm. This figure was surpassed just hours later at night to 6855 MW.

Despite being a Saturday and largely a holiday today, Delhi's peak power demand today clocked 6898 MW at 3:40 pm.

"It is worthwhile to note that on each of the days of May 2024 so far, Delhi's peak power demand is more than that of May 2023. In the first 16 days of May last year, Delhi's peak power demand had clocked 5781 MW," the release said.

"The weather has a profound impact on the power demand. This was visible in Delhi even during April 2024 in comparison to April 2023. In April 2024, Delhi's peak power demand ranged between 3809 MW and 5447 MW. As opposed to this, Delhi's peak power demand during April 2023 ranged between 3388 MW and 5422 MW," the release added.

Notably, several areas in the National Capital witness a surge in temperature amid the summer season.

Delhi's Safdarjung area, which recorded 43.4 degrees on May 17, recorded 43.6 degrees on May 18.

The Delhi Ridge area witnessed a surge in temperature from 43.2 degrees on May 17 to 45 degrees today.

As per the release, during April 2024, the peak power demand was higher on 83 per cent of the corresponding days compared to April 2023, with a difference of up to 32 per cent. This disparity highlights the profound impact that weather can have on a city's power consumption patterns.

"According to SLDC data, after clocking a record power demand of 7695 MW in 2022, Delhi's peak power demand during the summers of 2024 may cross the 8000 MW for the first time- reaching upto 8200 MW. Last year, Delhi's peak power demand had clocked 7438 MW," the release stated.

The official release also mentioned that around 2100 MW of Green power will play an important role in ensuring reliable power during the summer months in the BSES area.

"This includes around 840 MW of solar power from SECI, 500 MW of wind power, 40 MW from Waste-to-Energy. BSES efforts in ensuring reliable power are also being helped by 160 MW+ of roof-top solar installed on roof-tops in South, West, East, and Central Delhi," the release said.

The principal of a government school was thrashed by a group of people when he went to survey a madrasa in Ahmedabad on Saturday, police said.

The police have arrested two men after a case was registered against five to seven persons for unlawful assembly, rioting and voluntarily causing hurt, robbery and criminal intimidation, a police official said.

Sandeep Patel, principal of Shruti Higher Secondary School, went to the madrasa in the Dariyapur locality of the city to collect details, including the number of students there and about its infrastructure, as part of a government exercise, the official said.

The group also threatened to kill him, Mr Patel said in his complaint, adding that he somehow escaped from the spot. "We have arrested two persons in this connection. Further investigation is underway," the Dariyapur police station official said.

Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) education committee officer Labdhir Desai said several such premises were surveyed as per the government order.

"We conducted a survey on 175 madrasas and each team consisted of two members. We received support during the exercise," he said.

Bus Carrying Uttarakhand Pilgrims Catches Fire In Madhya Pradesh, None Hurt

Pilgrims travelling to Uttarakhand for 'Char Dham Yatra' in a private bus from Maharashtra's Buldhana town had a providential escape when their vehicle suddenly caught fire on Friday here in Madhya Pradesh and was completely gutted, officials said.

No one was injured in the incident which took place in the afternoon as passengers quickly came out of the bus, which was totally gutted, a police official said.

A total of 30 passengers, including eight children, were on-board the ill-fated bus when it caught fire near Kolaras town in Shivpuri district, Sub-Divisional Officer of Police (SDOP) Vijay Yadav said.

As soon as the travellers noticed smoke emanating in the bus, they immediately came out, a woman passenger said.

Later, the bus was engulfed in flames which were doused by a fire tender, Yadav said, adding it appears the blaze was caused by an electrical short-circuit.

The luggage of the passengers bound for Uttarakhand was damaged in the fire, the official added.

A total of 60 passengers in two private buses had left from Buldhana town on May 15 for the popular pilgrimage to four sacred Hindu sites located in the Himalayas, he said.

Europe's Top Rights Organisation Adopts First International Treaty On AI

Europe's top rights organisation on Friday adopted the first ever legally binding international treaty governing the use of artificial intelligence (AI).

Experts have called on international organisations and governments to mitigate risks from AI technology, which is expected to transform nearly every aspect of human life in the coming years.

"The treaty, which is also open to non-European countries, sets out a legal framework that covers the entire lifecycle of AI systems and addresses the risks they may pose, while promoting responsible innovation," the Council of Europe said in a statement.

The text was adopted at the annual ministerial meeting of the Council of Europe's Committee of Ministers, which brings together the foreign ministers of the 46 member states.

"The Framework Convention on Artificial Intelligence is a first-of-its-kind, global treaty that will ensure that Artificial Intelligence upholds people's rights," Council of Europe Secretary General Marija Pejcinovic said in a statement.

"With this new treaty, we aim to ensure a responsible use of AI that respects human rights, the rule of law and democracy."

The convention is the result of two years of work by an intergovernmental body, which brought together the Council's 46 member states, the European Union and 11 non-member states including the United States and the Vatican, as well as representatives of civil society and academia.

Among other provisions, the treaty requires parties to ensure that AI systems are not used to undermine democratic institutions and processes, the Council of Europe said.

"Transparency and oversight requirements" would include "identifying content generated by AI systems" to users, it added.

The framework convention will be opened for signature in Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, at a conference of justice ministers in September.

In March, the European Parliament adopted the world's most far-reaching rules to govern artificial intelligence, including powerful systems like OpenAI's ChatGPT.

Senior EU officials have said the rules, first proposed in 2021, will protect citizens from the risks of a technology developing at breakneck speed, while also fostering innovation on the continent.

Calcutta High Court Orders Release Of BJP Leader Arrested In Sandeshkhali 'Sting' Case

In a blow to the West Bengal government, the Calcutta High Court on Friday ordered the release of a woman BJP leader from Sandeshkhali, Mampi Das who was arrested after a sting operation video went viral in which a BJP leader stated that the women's protest was plotted and orchestrated by the BJP and Das played a key role in it.

While raising questions on the justification for the arrest, the single-judge Bench of Justice Jay Sengupta also questioned who was behind the police action.

Justice Sengupta ordered that Das be released on a personal bond and put a stay on Section 195A (punishment for threatening to give false evidence) of the Indian Penal Code imposed on her.

The next hearing on the matter will be on June 19.

He also observed how Ms Das was arrested. Stating that there were clear directions of the Supreme Court on the use of Section 195A, a non-bailable offence, he observed that if not the Calcutta High Court, the state government and police should at least go by the directions of the Supreme Court.

He also questioned the order of the Judicial Magistrate who ordered the arrest of Das in the matter. "Who is the Investigating Officer in this case and who is the mastermind?" he questioned.

He also questioned how the lower court ordered police custody for Das without examining the Case Diary.

The BJP's state spokesman Samik Bhattacharya said, "Since the beginning, we had been saying that Mampi's arrest was a part of a bigger conspiracy."

Lok Sabha Elections Like Battle Of Pandavas And Kauravas: Amit Shah In Bihar

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday linked the upcoming general election to the battle of Mahabharata and said that two camps are contesting Lok Sabha polls, one of 'Pandavas' represented by NDA alliance and the other of 'Kauravas' represented by INDIA bloc.

He also took a potshot at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's foreign vacations adding that he cannot develop 'Bihar and Madhubani' as he goes on vacation to Bangkok and Thailand during summer.

Addressing a public rally in Bihar's Madhubani, Mr Shah said, "Can Rahul Baba develop Bihar and Madhubani? 'Ye to thodi garmi badhte hi Bangkok, Thailand Chhutti pe chale jate hain'. And PM Modi on the other hand, is celebrating Diwali on the borders with our soldiers. Just like Mahabharat, there are clear camps on both sides, one of Pandavas and the other of Kauravas."

Mr Shah used the battle, fought between members of the same dynastic clan where the Kauravas represented the unvirtuous, and the Pandavas stood for principles as an allegory to define the present-day electoral contest between the NDA and the INDIA bloc.

He slammed the Congress-led opposition for 'raising fear about Pakistan's atomic power', and said that the Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) belongs to India and the country will take it back.

Lashing out at Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge over his remarks on the "relevance" of Jammu and Kashmir at a Rajasthan rally, Mr Shah said even after crossing 80 years of age, the former could not understand India.

"Is Kashmir ours or not? Mallikarjun Kharge asks what do people of Rajasthan and Bihar have to do with Kashmir. Kharge Saheb, you crossed 80 years of age but could not understand India. INDI alliance said that 370 should not be removed. Rahul Baba said that rivers of blood will flow. Rahul Baba, no one can even pelt a pebble," he said.

"INDI alliance says that we should not speak of PoK as Pakistan has an atom bomb. India is so strong under PM Modi's leadership that there is no need to fear any atomic bomb. 'Pak occupied Kashmir hamara hai, rahega aur usko hum lekar rahenge'," the Home Minister added.

At a rally in Rajasthan earlier, Mr Kharge referred to PM Modi's recent speech in the state and mentioned the scrapping of Article 370 and said it was not Rajasthan's issue but of Jammu and Kashmir.
He further promised the people of the state they would not allow cow smuggling or slaughter here.

"Cases of cow slaughter used to come from this area in huge numbers. I want to assure you, make PM Modi the prime minister for the third time, 'Gau Hatya karne walo ko ulta latka kar sidha karne ka kaam karenge.' This is the land of Mother Sita, cow slaughter is unacceptable here. We will not allow cow smuggling or slaughter here. This is Narendra Modi's promise," Mr Shah said.

The incumbent MP from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Ashok Kumar Yadav, will contest against the Rashtriya Janata Dal's (RJD) Md Ali Ashraf Fatmi, who is contesting as part of the INDIA bloc from Madhubani.

Notably, the 40 seats in Bihar are undergoing polls in all seven phases. In 2019, BJP-led NDA swept the state by winning 39 out of 40 seats, while Congress won just one seat. RJD, a formidable force in the state failed to open its account.

The counting of votes will be held on June 4.

6 Pollution-Hit Gujarat Villages To Get Rs 25 Lakh Aid After Supreme Court's Order

Six villages in Gujarat's Rajkot district that were affected by pollution due to a landfill will collectively get Rs 25 lakh compensation following a recent order of the Supreme Court, an NGO said on Wednesday.

The company responsible for the pollution had been directed by the top court to deposit the money as per a 2013 order of the National Green Tribunal (NGT). The NGO, Paryavaran Mitra, said they will now follow up with the authorities to get the amount released.

As per the case details, the Rajkot Municipal Corporation had signed an agreement with Hanjer Biotech Energies Private Limited (HBEPL) in 2003 to set up and run a solid waste disposal site at Nakrawadi village near Rajkot city.

However, due to improper handling of solid waste and dispersion of untreated garbage in nearby areas, people from six villages in the vicinity faced health issues and other problems like groundwater contamination and degradation of farmland, said NGO director Mahesh Pandya.

About 7,500 people live in these villages - Nakrawadi, Pialiya, Nagalpar, Hadmatiya, Khijadiya and Rajgadh.

"We had filed a petition with the NGT, which found merit in our case. Through an order in December 2013, the NGT had asked the company to deposit Rs 25 lakh with the collector for disbursement as compensation to these five village panchayats," said Mr Pandya.

While the company challenged the NGT order in the Supreme Court, which directed it to first deposit Rs 25 lakh with the collector, it became bankrupt during the pendency of the appeal, he said.

"We are of the opinion that during the rainy season the air and water pollution is caused on account of water slippage from the landfill site because of untreated solid waste which flows along with rainy water from the slope of a small hillock towards the village side," the NGT had said in its order 2013 order.

"We also find that HBEPL failed to take proper precaution for maintenance of landfill site," the green court had added.

In its order dated May 7, the SC "disposed of" the appeal of HBEPL and directed the Rajkot collector to distribute Rs 25 lakh to the affected villages. It has come over a decade after the NGT passed its order about compensation, said Pandya.

"Our team will soon meet the Rajkot collector and municipal commissioner with the demand that the interest on Rs 25 lakh be included in the final amount. Moreover, we will also ask RMC (Rajkot Municipal Corporation) to give separate compensation to the villagers," said Pandya.

After HBEPL became bankrupt, the Rajkot civic body signed an agreement with another company to manage the landfill. "The new company is managing solid waste at the site systematically," he added.

Kiran Mazumdar Shaw's Angry Post After Video Shows Trash On Bengaluru Roads: ''Disgusting Sight''

Biocon chief Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw on Tuesday called out Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) for not clearing trash from the streets of Bengaluru. Ms Mazumdar-Shaw's sharp comments came in response to a video shared on X that showed a long stretch of the Outer Ring Road lined with garbage. Calling the sight ''disgusting'', the Biocon boss asked the Bengaluru civic body department to swiftly clear up the "ugly mess".

''Disgusting sight. @BBMPSWMSplComm needs to act swiftly to clean up this ugly mess,'' she wrote on X while quite-tweeting the original video.

Watch the video here:

The video is now going viral with many X users calling for immediate action. Several people slammed the authorities and said that such a sight is ''unfortunately common'' in other cities too. However, some said that citizens also should have basic civic sense and should try to keep the streets clean.

One user wrote, ''Yes this is next to the same road.. even more shameful is most of the expats, consulates, ministers, even BBMP top officers stay in this locality and they take this route everyday! We are not only letting our city down we are also letting our nation down by displaying such filthy habits.''

Another commented, ''This is the tragic scenario in every tier 1 and tier 2 cities. There are NO public trash bins, so people will throw the garbage wherever they feel like. Unless civic bodies install, insist on using, and maintain the #publictrashbins this will continue.''

A third said, ''Every area in Bengaluru has Roads like these. First, people need to be educated and punished too !!''

A fourth added, ''Hi Maam - It has been similar in few areas now. I have observed people dumping waste near metro stations, dividers and this happens during night. We need to penalize the offenders heavily along with cctv cameras to identify who repeatedly dump in these places.''

Congress Leader Gets Bail In Amit Shah Fake Video Case

A Delhi court on Monday granted bail to a Congress member arrested in connection with a fake video of Union Home Minister Amit Shah's speech, noting that he has cooperated in the probe and his further custodial interrogation is not required.

Arun Reddy, who was arrested on May 3, handles the 'Spirit of Congress' account on 'X', according to officials.

Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Nabeela Wali noted that the prime allegation against the accused on the basis of which he was arrested was being the 'Admin' of the WhatsApp group on which the alleged fake video was first posted for circulation.

However, there are no allegations of the accused having posted/ circulated the said video on any forum, the judge noted.

He noted that the accused was in custody since May 3 and the investigating agency had already taken his police remand.

"Further, the applicant/ accused, as per reply of the investigating officer (IO) has co-operated with the investigating agency and has disclosed the name of his associates/ other investigation. Also, it is an admitted position that no further police custody is required," the judge said.

The court said that the other suspects in the present case have been granted protection from coercive action by the High Court of Telangana.

"In the opinion of this court, further custodial interrogation of the accused is not required.

"Moreover, it is not the case of the investigating agency that the whereabouts/ details of the other suspects are not known to them.

"It is also submitted that no further recovery is to be effected from the accused and mobile phone of the accused has already been seized and the accused has clean antecedents. Accordingly, the accused Arun Kumar Bereddy is granted bail," the judge said.

The judge directed the accused to join the investigation as and when required by the IO (investigating officer) and to furnish his mobile phone number to the IO which shall be kept operational at all times so that he can be reached out.

"That accused shall not leave the country without the permission from the Court. The accused shall attend the proceedings either before the I0 or before the court," the judge said.

The judge further directed the accused not to directly or indirectly make any inducement, threat or promise to any person acquainted with the facts of the case so as to dissuade him from disclosing such facts to the court or to any police officer or tamper with the evidence.

The court had earlier sent Reddy, 37, to judicial custody after the police told that the accused was not required for further interrogation.

The Delhi Police had arrested Reddy on Friday.

The special cell had registered an FIR after the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), which functions under the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), filed a complaint about the doctored video of Shah where his statements indicating a commitment to abolish quota for Muslims in Telangana were changed to make it seem that he was advocating scrapping of all reservation.

7 Killed In Ukrainian Missile Strike On Russia

At least seven people were killed and 17 injured when a whole section of a Russian apartment block collapsed after it was struck by a Soviet-era missile launched by Ukraine and shot down by Russia, Russian officials said.

In one of the deadliest attacks to date on the region of Belgorod, Ukraine launched what Russian officials said was a massive missile attack with Tochka ballistic missiles and Adler and RM-70 Vampire (MLRS) multiple launch rocket systems.

Footage from the scene showed at least 10 storeys of the building collapsing. Later, as emergency services scoured the rubble for survivors, the roof collapsed and people ran for their lives, dust and rubble falling behind them.

Russia's defence ministry said the attack, which it called a "a terrorist attack on residential areas", took place at 08:40 GMT and involved at least 12 missiles.

"Fragments of one of the downed Tochka-U missiles damaged an apartment building in the city of Belgorod," the ministry said.

Russian news agencies said at least seven people had been killed and 17 injured, including two children. Others were still trapped under the rubble.

Both Ukraine and Russia say they do not target civilians, though many civilians have been killed in the war by both sides.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that the strike was a targeted attack on civilians which showed the criminality of both Ukraine and its backers - primarily the United States and its European allies.

There was no immediate comment from Ukraine on the attack.

Kharkiv Front

After heavy shelling of Ukraine's northeastern Kharkiv region, Russian forces smashed through the border over recent days and say they have pushed Ukrainian forces out of at least nine villages in the area.

The move threatens to open up a new front and has forced Ukraine to dedicate additional troops to the area just as Russian forces advance at key points along the front in the south and the east.

Russian troops on Sunday said they seized another four villages - Hatyshche, Krasne, Morokhovets, Oliinykove - in Kharkiv region in Ukraine.

Russian military bloggers said Russia was taking advantage of its numerical superiority on the battlefield to push hard into relatively undefended areas with highly mobile small units of troops, which then surrounded Ukrainian positions.

Ukraine's military chief said his country's forces were facing a difficult situation in fighting in the Kharkiv region, but that they were doing all they could to hold the line.

"Units of the Defense Forces are fighting fierce defensive battles, the attempts of the Russian invaders to break through our defenses have been stopped," Oleksandr Syrskyi said.

In response to Ukrainian attacks on Belgorod, President Vladimir Putin suggested in March that Moscow could try to establish a buffer zone inside Ukrainian territory due to the attacks on Belgorod.

Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022.

The conflict in eastern Ukraine began in 2014 after a pro-Russian president was toppled in Ukraine's Maidan Revolution and Russia annexed Crimea, with Russian-backed separatist forces fighting Ukraine's armed forces.

About 14,000 people were killed there between 2014 and the end of 2021, according to United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), including 3,106 civilians.

James Webb Telescope Discovers Rocky Planet with Atmosphere, But It's A Fiery Inferno

Scientists have discovered a rocky planet beyond our solar system with an atmosphere, a major finding in the search for habitable worlds. However, this newfound planet, 55 Cancri e, is far too hot to support life as we know it.

Nicknamed "Janssen," 55 Cancri e is a super-Earth, much larger than Earth but smaller than Neptune. It orbits its star incredibly close, completing a revolution every 18 hours. This proximity subjects the planet to intense heat, with surface temperatures reaching a scorching 3,140 degrees Fahrenheit.

Researchers used the James Webb Space Telescope to detect the presence of a thick atmosphere around 55 Cancri e. The atmosphere is likely composed of carbon dioxide or carbon monoxide and may be replenished by gases erupting from a vast magma ocean on the planet's surface.

"The atmosphere is likely rich in carbon dioxide or carbon monoxide, but it can also have other gases such as water vapour and sulphur dioxide. The current observations cannot pinpoint the exact atmospheric composition," said planetary scientist Renyu Hu of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Caltech, the lead author of the study published in the journal Nature.

The finding is significant because it demonstrates the capabilities of the James Webb Telescope in studying the atmospheres of exoplanets. While 55 Cancri e itself isn't hospitable, the research paves the way for the discovery of truly habitable worlds in the future.

"Indeed, this is one of the hottest-known rocky exoplanets," said astrophysicist and study co-author Brice-Olivier Demory of the University of Bern's Centre for Space and Habitability in Switzerland, using the term for planets beyond our solar system. "There are likely better places for a vacation spot in our galaxy."

Arrest Warrent Issued Against Ex Congress Indore Nominee In 17-Year-Old Case

A sessions court here on Friday issued an arrest warrant against local businessman Akshay Bam and his father in a 17-year-old attempt to murder case.

Akshay Bam was recently in the news for withdrawing his nomination from the Indore Lok Sabha seat as a Congress candidate and later joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Talking to reporters, public prosecutor Abhijit Singh Rathore said Akshay Bam and his father were supposed to appear before the sessions court in the alleged attempt to murder case, but their lawyer moved an application in the court seeking exemption from personal appearance for his clients.

Abhijit Rathore said that as per the application, Akshay Bam was out of the town for "essential work", while doctors advised rest to his father because of poor health.

The session's court rejected the father-son duo's application and issued an arrest warrant against them. It also ordered the police to arrest them and present them before the court by July 8, he said.

According to the public prosecutor, the court noted that both the accused did not appear before it even after being ordered to do so on Friday and they were not currently on bail in the case of section 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

On May 3, a sessions court had refused to grant anticipatory bail to Akshay Bam and his father in the alleged attempt to murder case.

On April 24, a Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) from Indore had ordered the addition of section 307 (attempt to murder) of the IPC in the FIR lodged against Akshay Bam and his father for allegedly assaulting a man over a land dispute 17 years ago. The court had also ordered the father-son duo to appear before the session's court on May 10.

Just five days after the order, Akshay Bam had taken the step of withdrawing his name as the Congress candidate from Indore.

Akshay Bam was named as the Congress candidate for the Indore Lok Sabha seat on March 23.

Police officials said an FIR was registered against Akshay Bam, his father Kantilal and others for allegedly attacking a person named Yunus Patel over a land dispute on October 4, 2007.

The FIR was filed under sections 294 (abusive speech), 323 (assault), 506 (criminal intimidation) and other relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), he said.

Patel alleged that during the incident, Satvir Singh, who runs a security agency, fired at him with a 12 bore gun at the behest of Akshay's father Kantilal.

The accused Satvir Singh later died while two other accused in the case, Sohan alias Sonu and Manoj, have been on the run.
