12 Delhi Cops Injured While Trying To Control Mob Assaulting Extortionist

At least 12 police personnel were injured while trying to control a mob that was allegedly assaulting a suspected extortionist in west Delhi's Khayala area on Wednesday, police said.

Balram, who is facing more than 12 criminal cases, is accused of threatening vendors at Raghubir Nagar market in Khayala for "protection money", they said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Vichitra Veer said two separate FIRs have been registered in connection with the violence and the alleged extortion.

Early on Wednesday, when Balram had gone to collect "protection money" from vendors, he was confined by some people and thrashed, another police officer said.

When information about the assault reached the local police station, a team was rushed to the spot.

When personnel in the police team tried to rescue Balram, the mob pelted them with stones, the officer said.

The mob also torched Balram's car that was parked in the market and tried to beat up Pramod, his associate. Balram was rescued safely, he added.

Twelve police personnel suffered minor injures and were discharged from hospital after first aid. Balram is admitted to Safdarjung Hospital and his condition is stable, the officer said.

Teams have been formed to investigate both the cases, he added.

Zelensky Says 31,000 Ukrainian Soldiers Killed In 2 Years Of War With Russia

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Sunday his country's victory "depends" on Western support and that he was "sure" the United States would approve a critical package of military aid.

He also said 31,000 Ukrainian soldiers had been killed in two years of war with Russia, in a rare admission of military losses.

"Whether Ukraine will lose, whether it will be very difficult for us and whether there will be a large number of casualties depends on you, on our partners, on the Western world," Zelensky said.

He spoke at a press conference in Kyiv dedicated to the second anniversary of Russia's invasion at a time when Ukraine has been weakened by a shortage of ammunition and the blocking of US aid in Congress.

"There is hope for Congress, and I am sure that it is going to be positive, otherwise I do not understand the world we will start to live in," Zelensky said.

The aid has been blocked amid resistance from Republicans.

For the first time, Zelensky put a number on Ukraine's military losses in two years of brutal fighting with Russia, saying "31,000 Ukrainian soldiers died in this war."

"Not 300,000 or 150,000, or whatever (Russian President Vladimir) Putin and his lying circle are saying. But each of these losses is a great loss for us," he added.

Both sides are believed to minimise deaths of troops.

Asked if he would talk to Putin, Zelensky said: "Can you talk to a deaf person? Can you talk to a man who kills his opponents?"

Putin's main opponent Alexei Navalny died in an Arctic prison this month.

"He sees himself (in power) by 2030, we would like to finish with him sooner," Zelensky added, mocking an upcoming presidential election in Russia that is likely to extend Putin's long rule until 2030.

US Opposes Israel's "Reoccupation" Of Gaza

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Friday reaffirmed Washington's opposition to any reoccupation of the Gaza Strip by Israel as well as any reduction of the Palestinian territory's size.

Blinken's remarks were in response to a plan for post-war Gaza put forward by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in which his country's army would have "indefinite freedom" to operate throughout the Gaza Strip once Hamas is defeated.

"Gaza... cannot be a platform for terrorism. There should be no Israeli reoccupation of Gaza. The size of Gaza territory should not be reduced," Blinken said in Buenos Aires, after attending a G20 meeting of foreign ministers in Brazil.

Blinken reaffirmed Washington's support for Israel's right to "self-defense" after a Thursday attack near a Jewish settlement in the West Bank, in which three Palestinians fired on vehicles, killing one and wounding eight.

Palestinians have complained of worsening Israeli-imposed restrictions in the West Bank since the outbreak of the war in the Gaza Strip between Israel and Hamas.

Israel's far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich called for a "firm security response... and colonization" by building thousands of new housing units in settlements like Maale Adumim and across the West Bank.

Blinken said that "new settlements are counterproductive to reaching enduring peace, and also inconsistent with international law."

"Our administration maintains firm opposition to settlement expansion. In our judgment, this only weakens, it doesn't strengthen, Israel's security."

"I Wrote The Book Because...": S Jaishankar On His 'Why Bharat Matters'

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, while speaking on his book "Why Bharat Matters", said that whether you're an Indian national or someone living abroad, it is important to understand 'Why Bharat Matters', because it will be bigger in the coming decade and in the century.

While speaking at the Raisina Dialogue 2024, Mr Jaishankar said on Friday, "I wrote the book because I was really convinced it was important to present an argument today why, whether you are a national of this country or whether you are someone living abroad, it's important to understand, why Bharat matters, that we will be bigger in everybody's lives in the coming decade and the coming century."

He further explained that the book is about the state of the world, globalization, technology and digital.

"I think it's obviously about the state of the world, the longer trend of rebalancing, but the shocks that I've referred to, it's about globalization, the advances of globalization, but also the shortcomings, and problems created by globalization. It's about technology and digital and how, again, they hold such great promise, but they have made us in many ways so vulnerable," he added.

Moreover, he emphasised that his book "Why Bharat Matters" is about why foreign policy matters to everyone.

"It's about telling people not involved in foreign policy why foreign policy matters to you. Because for many years, certainly in my country...a lot of people said, that's not our problem. Somebody is taking care of it," he said.

He further said that he travels around the country, "telling people, look, something happened. There was COVID; you heard about it. You saw it on social media, you heard about it on TV, and when it came to your homes, it took over your lives. Or what we saw as a consequence of the conflict in Ukraine, the energy hikes, the price hikes, and the food shortages in many parts of the world."

Moving further to his second book, "The India Way," EAM Jaishankar highlighted that his first book was about the way, and the second is about India's significance in people's lives.

"The first one was about the way, the second is about India's significance in people's lives."

He further said that he used the word Bharat in the second book, "Why Bharat Matters" as opposed to "The India Way" because "I'm trying to capture, a kind of transformation that has taken place in our society, in our polity, in our mindset, in our approach to the world."

Moreover, he said, "If we look at the thought processes that are driving us today, they are much more authentic. They are much more deeply rooted in our culture, in our traditions, in our heritage."

European Union Strikes 50 Billion Euros Ukraine Aid Deal

EU leaders on Thursday struck a deal with Viktor Orban to get 50 billion euros in financial aid to Ukraine, overcoming the Hungarian prime minister's veto with surprising speed at a crunch summit in Brussels.

As doubts swirl over future support from Ukraine's other major ally the United States, the Eeuropean Union deal is a huge boost for Kyiv as Russia's war nears the start of its third year.

"All 27 leaders agreed on an additional €50 billion support package for Ukraine within the EU budget," European Council president Charles Michel, who chairs the summit, wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

"This locks in steadfast, long-term, predictable funding for Ukraine."

The abrupt about-face from Orban on the vital four-year funding package for Kyiv came after EU leaders offered a possible review of the spending in two years -- if called for by consensus among member states.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky hailed the deal in a video address to the EU leaders as "a clear signal that Ukraine will withstand and that Europe will withstand".

European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen hailed a "good day for Europe."

The money will plug holes in the Ukrainian government's budget to allow it to pay salaries and services, as its outgunned soldiers battle to hold back Moscow's forces.

Orban -- Russia's closest ally in the EU -- sparked fury from his 26 counterparts in the bloc by thwarting a December deal on the aid.

Thursday's talks were expected again to see hours of protracted political arm-wrestling but a deal was swiftly announced after Orban met first with the leaders of Germany, France, Italy and the EU institutions.

"He gave some ground," said one European diplomat. "He saw that people were growing irritated, that there was a line not to cross."

The Hungarian nationalist had been accused of holding Ukraine's future hostage in a bid to blackmail Brussels into releasing billions of euros in frozen EU funds for Budapest.

While there was no suggestion of a direct quid-pro-quo, Orban did win assurances that Brussels would handle the question of Budapest's blocked funds worth 20 billion euros with impartiality, the diplomat said.

"What Orban wants is not to be put in a corner," said another European diplomat. "It was a case of give and take. This was not about strong-arming, or threats. Everyone behaved constructively."

'Orban fatigue'

A number of EU leaders had piled into Orban for once-again disrupting the bloc.

Warning of growing "Orban fatigue" in Brussels, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said it was time for the Hungarian leader "to decide if he is a part of our community."

Other leaders had said if Orban did not drop his opposition, they would club together as 26 to keep aid flowing for Ukraine's government.

But with Kyiv facing possible budget shortfalls by spring, that option would have taken more time.

The latest EU showdown took place against the backdrop of swelling protests by European farmers, who clogged roads around the summit with 1,300 tractors in a show of strength, lighting fires and pulling down a city statue.

While the focus in the room was Orban, outside the nearby European Parliament angry farmers burnt tyres as they did their best to make sure their grievances were heard.

"We need to be able to discuss in the council on this topic because the concerns that they have are partly legitimate," said Belgium's Prime Minister Alexander De Croo.

Once the Ukraine aid was agreed, leaders turned more to the question of the future of EU military support for Kyiv.

Accusations have been levelled that key EU nations such as France, Italy and Spain are not pulling their weight on arming Ukraine.

Scholz, whose country is the largest European donor to Ukraine, has called for others to lay out their military support and do more to help Kyiv.

Video: Ukraine Destroys Russia's Ivanovets Missile Boat In Black Sea

Ukrainian forces say they have destroyed the Russian missile boat from the Black Sea Fleet in a targeted operation near Russian-occupied Crimea. The military intelligence says that the Ivanovets, a small warship, received "direct hits to the hull" overnight, after which it sank.

Ukrainian forces have also released video footage that purports to show the moment of the impact, followed by a massive explosion.

Russian authorities have not commented on the incident, BBC reported. Meanwhile, a Russian military blogger, "Voenkor Kotenok," wrote on Telegram that the boat sank after being struck three times by naval drones.

The Ukrainian video displays several identifiable features on the vessel that align with those of the Tarantul, also known as Project 12411-a missile boat class utilized by the Russian and other navies, to which the Ivanovets belong.

These features encompass the arrangement of the mast and sensors atop the primary superstructure, along with a sizable radar dome situated on the bridge.

According to Ukraine's Main Intelligence Directorate, the boat was eliminated by members of its special unit, "Group 13," in Lake Donuzlav. This saltwater bay is located on the western side of the Crimean peninsula and houses a naval base.

"As a result of a series of direct hits to the hull, the Russian ship suffered damage incompatible with further movement - the Ivanovets listed to the stern and sank," it said on its Telegram channel.

BBC report said that a Russian search and rescue operation in the are was unsuccessful. It said that the ship was worth in the region of $60-70 million.

Foreign Ministry official Olexander Scherba described the attack as "impressive".

"At 03:45 [01:45 GMT] there was the first hit and at 04:00 the whole crew was evacuated already. So there was no chance at all that this vessel would be saved," he told the BBC.

Ukraine has experienced a string of victories in the conflict in and around the Black Sea, inflicting damage or destruction on Russian warships despite lacking a naval fleet of its own.

"Bandh Karo": Passengers Protest At Delhi Airport After IndiGo Cancels Flight

Scores of passengers at the Delhi airport were on Wednesday seen shouting slogans against domestic carrier IndiGo after their flight was allegedly cancelled.

In a video posted by the news agency ANI, the passengers can be heard shouting "bandh karo, bandh karo" (stop it) after their flight from Delhi to Jharkhand's Deoghar was cancelled.

According to the flight tracking website Flightradar24, over 10 flights were cancelled and more than 50 flights were delayed at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport on Wednesday morning due to dense fog and bad weather.

Earlier in the day, IndiGo issued an advisory and said that flight operations in Delhi, Srinagar and Chandigarh are likely to be impacted due to inclement weather.

"Please keep a check on your flight status before leaving for the airport," IndiGo said.

IndiGo fined Rs 1.2 crore for five violations

IndiGo was fined Rs 1.2 crore for five violations earlier this month after its passengers were seen eating on the tarmac as they waited for their flight to take off.

Calling it a "violation of apron discipline", the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said, "It came to the notice of the DGCA through social media that on January 15, passengers of two IndiGo flights were on the apron for a considerable period at the CSMI Airport, Mumbai (MIAL). This violates Para 5 of DGCA Air Safety circular 04 of 2007 which directs all agencies working at the airport not to permit walking on an active apron. The presence of passengers on the apron for a considerable period violates apron discipline as it jeopardised the safety of the passengers and the aircraft."

IndiGo was asked to pay the penalty - the highest imposed on airlines in recent times - within 30 days.
