PM Modi On What Made Haj "Special" For Muslim Women This Year

In continuation of his outreach to the Muslim community, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday, while addressing the 103rd edition of his radio programme, 'Mann ki Baat', thanked the Saudi Arabia government for making changes in the Haj policy and said due to this change, over 4,000 Muslim women from India performed Haj without 'mehram' (male companion). He said many of them had written to them to express their joy and give their blessings.

"There are some letters that bring you a lot of joy and inspiration. The letters that my Muslim mothers and sisters have written to me, after returning from Haj, are like that. Their journey this year was very special in many ways. These are women who have been able to go to Haj without a male companion that was not allowed earlier. I want to thank the Saudi Arabia government for this change in policy," he said, calling the shift "transformative" as the number of women going for Haj from India without men accompanying them was not "50 or 100" but over 4,000.

Amid international scrutiny on human rights record and treatment of women, Saudi Arabia in 2019 had said that it would allow women to travel without the permission of a male relative.

Haj has been at the centre of political flashpoints in India. While the central government decided to do away with the discretionary Haj quota that was available with people in top constitutional posts and the minority affairs ministry, the Congress has been blaming the government for doing away with Haj subsidy that the centre has said was being misused.

Minority Affairs Minister Smriti Irani recently said a decision was taken to end discretionary quota in Haj under PM's resolve to end VIP culture. She also said her government made several changes in Haj yatra guidelines keeping in mind the interest of the people, including disallowing a VIP delegation that visits Saudi Arabia every year.

As many as 4,314 Indian women went for Haj without 'Mahram (male companion)' this year, the largest since the reform in 2018. The Minority Affairs Ministry had made comprehensive arrangements for the health of the Haj pilgrims with health desks at airports and medical screening by government doctors.

Each year, Saudi Arabia hosts around 25 lakh to 30 lakh pilgrims from across the globe to visit Mecca and India sends the third largest contingent of pilgrims in the world.

A quota of 1,75,025 Haj pilgrims was allotted to India. The annual pilgrimage took place in June-end.

Muslim women have been at the centre of the BJP's outreach towards the community, starting with the centre's move to criminalise Triple Talaq.

The PM's mention of Muslim women came a day after the BJP appointed former VC of Aligarh Muslim University Tariq Mansoor as one of its Vice presidents.

Mansoor has been working with the RSS on its efforts to promote teachings of Mughal prince Dara Shikoh on peaceful coexistence of Hindus and Muslims. As the VC of AMU during the anti CAA rights, his role was criticised by many students for being pro-government.

Mansoor is also a pasmanda Muslim, a non Ashraf Muslim - BJP has been trying to woo the Pasmanda Muslims for a while now.

The PM, specifically speaking in Bhopal recently, while making a pitch for the Uniform Civil Code had listed the names of the Muslim Pasmanda communities that were never given a voice by the opposition.

Apart from Mansoor, Abdulla Kutty is also a vice president with the BJP. He was appointed last year and also heads the Haj committee.

Formerly with the CPM and Congress, Abdulla Kutty has always been vocal in praising the PM's model of governance, and this works well for the BJP that has been trying to strengthen its position politically and ideologically in Kerala against the communist forces.

120 People Evacuated After Building's Pillars Develop Cracks Near Mumbai

Around 120 people were evacuated from an eight-storey building in Mumbra locality of Maharashtra's Thane city on Sunday after its pillars were found to have developed cracks, a civic official said.

The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) officials sealed all 45 flats in the building located in Almas Colony, chief of the civic body's Regional Disaster Management Cell Yasin Tadvi said.

"The building has 45 flats, of which 10 were already found locked. The residents from the other 35 flats were evacuated. They have made alternative arrangements for accommodation on their own," he said.

The building is 20 years old, he said, adding that the cracks in the pillars were noticed this morning.

The building did not figure in the list of 'dangerous' structures in the city, Tadvi said.

Power and water supply of the building has been snapped as a precautionary measure, he said.

"There are three towers of mobile service providers on top of the building, and the civic officials have asked the building office-bearers to remove them," he added.

The civic body will take a decision on the building soon as its condition has become dangerous, Tadvi said.

Ex Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya Still Critical

The health condition of former West Bengal chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya remained critical but stable on Sunday evening, a doctor of a city-based hospital where he is undergoing treatment said.

The 79-year-old politician remained on mechanical ventilation, he said.

"Bhattacharya's health condition remained critical but stable on Sunday evening. He is on mechanical ventilation. Relevant conservative medical management is being continued. Oxygen saturation in his blood, as well as blood pressure, has improved.

"He is responding to the treatment but still is not out of danger. Our doctors closely monitored him and there was no major deterioration,” the doctor told PTI.

A multidisciplinary medical team, after re-examining Mr Bhattacharya, decided to conduct a CT scan of his thorax, he said, adding that it would be done on Monday.

"Blood pressure has improved and he is responding to treatment. We are hopeful that he will come out of this crisis," Mr Bhattacharya's cousin Malavika Chatterjee said.

Several leaders of the CPI(M), including Biman Bose, visited Mr Bhattacharya in the hospital.

The former chief minister was diagnosed with a lower respiratory tract infection and Type 2 respiratory failure.

Besides being on invasive ventilation, doctors are administering antibiotics and other supportive management.

On Saturday night, he was shifted to invasive ventilation from non-invasive one after his health condition deteriorated.

Mr Bhattacharya, who was the chief minister from 2000 to 2011, has been suffering from COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) and other old age-related ailments for quite some time.

He has been away from public life for the past few years due to his health condition.

Mr Bhattacharya stepped down from the CPI(M)'s politburo and the central committee in 2015 and gave up membership in the party's state secretariat in 2018.

Special Probe Team Formed To Investigate Kerala 5-Year-Old's Rape-Murder

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted by the Deputy Superintendent of Police of Kerala's Aluva to investigate the alleged rape and murder of a 5-year-old girl, an official said.

Speaking to news agency ANI, Ernakulam Rural District Police Chief Vivek Kumar said that a team of around fourteen people has been formed for further probe into the case.

"Special investigation team has been formed under the leadership of Aluva DySP. ISHO Manjudas is the investigating officer. We have a team of around 14 people including SIs, ASIs, and Cyber experts," Mr Kumar said.

As per the doctor's statement, there were injuries to the private parts of the girl and the death was due to asphyxiation caused by strangulation, he added.

"The statement of the doctor, who conducted the autopsy of the child, said that there were injuries in the private parts and the death was due to asphyxiation caused by strangulation. The motive was the sexual gratification of the accused," he added.

The five-year-old girl, the daughter of migrant workers from Bihar, was kidnapped from near their house in Aluva in broad daylight on July 28.

She was later found murdered and sexually abused with several gruesome injuries at a dumping area at the Aluva market on Saturday.

The accused, who has been arrested, has been identified as Asafaq Alam (29), also from Bihar.

The Ernakulam Rural District Police chief, Vivek Kumar, said that the background check in the accused hometown in Bihar is underway.

"CCTV footage will be analysed in the coming days. There is no crime detail against the accused as of now. The background check in his native place is ongoing. After the proper official acknowledgement, we will get a proper reply from the Bihar Police," Vivek Kumar added.

The Kerala Police today posted an apology after facing criticism over their actions in the incident.

"Sorry daughter," the Kerala Police said in a tweet in Malayalam, adding, "Our efforts to bring her alive to her parents were unsuccessful. The suspect who kidnapped the child was arrested."

10 Cops Injured After Violence Erupted During Muharram Procession In Delhi

A section of people taking out Muharram processions clashed with police and pelted stones at them, injuring around 10 cops and damaging several vehicles, after they were stopped from changing the designated route in west Delhi's Nangloi on Saturday, officials said.

The police resorted to lathicharge to disperse the "unruly crowd", they said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer) Harendra Singh said, "Several 'tazia' processions were being carried out in Nagloi area and around eight to ten thousand people participated in them. One or two organisers became unruly and tried to divert their procession route which was earlier decided." "When police objected to it, they started pelting stones at police personnel. In order to control them, police resorted to a mild lathicharge and dispersed them from the area," Singh said.

According to the police, around 10 personnel received minor injuries and some police vehicles were damaged in the stone pelting.

The situation in the area is under control, the police said.

Some purported videos of the incident were circulated on social media.

In the videos, some people in the area are seen pelting stones causing damage to public vehicles, including buses, and private cars.

In one of the videos, police are seen resorting to lathicharge.

Muslims take out "tazia" processions on Muharram to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, a grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, in the battle of Karbala in 680 AD. "Tazia" is a miniature replica of the tomb of Imam Hussain.

Nothing Will Happen By Changing Name: Amit Shah Slams Opposition Front

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday slammed the Congress and its allies, including the DMK, saying nothing would happen by changing the name of their alliance to INDIA.

He was addressing a rally here, ahead of kick-starting Tamil Nadu BJP President K Annamalai's state-wide 'En Mann, En Makkal (My Land, My People)' padayatra.

"When Congress and its allies, including the DMK, go to the people seeking votes, the public would remember the corruption, including the 2G scam and CommonWealth Games scam during the UPA regime, " he said.

"Congress-DMK and allies opposed the removal of Art 370; is Kashmir ours or not," he asked.

Taking forward Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Tamil pitch, he said PM Modi honoured Tamil culture by installing the 'sengol' in the new parliament building.

The senior BJP leader hit out at the DMK regime, calling it the most corrupt in the nation and said the BJP's yatra is an attempt to usher in politics of development and good governance in Tamil Nadu.

Mr Shah named Congress and its allies one by one, including the DMK, Trinamool Congress and Shiv Sena (UBT), and accused them all of trying to empower their families and not the nation.

"Sonia Gandhi wants to make her son Rahul the Prime Minister, M K Stalin wants to make his son Udhayanidhi the Chief Minister."

The BJP top leader also criticised West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, RJD leader Lalu Prasad Yadav and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray as leaders who desired to see their heirs in leadership positions.

"However, PM Modi is the only leader who is working for the nation's development," he said.

Mr Shah also raised the issue of an accused person who is in jail continuing as a minister in Tamil Nadu. "Stalin should be ashamed of retaining V Senthil Balaji, arrested in an Enforcement Directorate case and in jail, in the cabinet," the union minister said.

"Can a person in jail continue as a minister," he asked. "Should Senthil Balaji not have resigned? Even if Senthil Balaji resigns, Stalin will not accept it because he is afraid that all secrets will be disclosed." Mr Shah said a single tweet of BJP state chief Annamalai has rattled the DMK regime, a reference to the state BJP leader's allegations of corruption vis-a-vis the 'DMK Files'.

"Imagine what will happen when Annamalai takes the yatra across the state," he asked.

Mr Shah later flagged off the 'En Mann, En Makkal' padayatra alongside state BJP president K Annamalai. The yatra, which will go on for six months, marks the start of BJP's poll campaign ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha election.

The yatra will cover all 234 assembly constituencies in the State.

Anti-Terror Squad Arrests Pune Man Who Gave Shelter To 2 Terror Suspects

The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) on Thursday said it has arrested a man in Pune for allegedly giving shelter to the two terror suspects held last week by the city police by subletting a flat where he was a tenant.

The ATS also said that it recovered black "explosive" powder, laptops, parts of drones, books written in Arabic, among other things from the two terror suspects, in addition to a tent that the duo had allegedly procured to stay in the forest areas in Pune's adjoining districts.

The ATS took over the probe into the case from the Pune police recently.

The two terror suspects, wanted by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for their alleged involvement in a terror-related case in Rajasthan, was arrested from the Kothrud area of Pune city in the early hours of July 18.

A court in Pune later remanded the duo - Mohammad Imran Mohammad Yunus Khan (23) and Mohammad Yunus Mohammad Yakub Saki (24) - in police custody till July 25, which was extended till August 5.

"A man identified as Abdul Qadir Dastgir Pathan was arrested on Wednesday for giving shelter to Khan and Saki in Pune," the ATS said.

On Thursday, he was produced in a special court, which remanded in the ATS custody till August 5.

Seeking the custody of Qadir, the ATS told the court that he had sublet his rented flat in Kondhwa to these two accused.

After hearing the arguments, the court remanded Qadir in the ATS custody till August 5, observing that the case was of serious nature.

The ATS also detained a man from coastal Ratnagiri district, but it was not clear whether he is the same person held for giving shelter to the terror suspects.

The two arrested terror suspects hail from Ratlam in Madhya Pradesh and are graphic designers. Both carried a bounty of Rs 5 lakh each, the police said.

They fled Ratlam after coming to know that their names cropped up in the investigation in the terror case in which some suspected members of the Al-Sufa outfit were arrested by the Rajasthan police from the Madhya Pradesh town, the police said.

They landed in Mumbai, where they stayed in the Bhendi Bazaar area for two to three days and then came to Pune's Kondhwa area. The duo took up jobs with the help of a local resident, the sources said.

They befriended a third person, a resident of Jharkhand, who managed to escape when the police arrested the duo, they said.

In Kondhwa, the accused duo happened to meet Qadir and told him that they have come to Pune in search of a job as their financial condition was weak, the sources said.

Qadir, who himself was involved in graphic designing work, provided them job and sublet the place, he had taken on rent, to them as an accommodation, they said.

The ATS said that they recovered a tent, which the two terror suspects had procured to live in the jungle areas.

Several items, such as laptops, tablets, weighing machines, parts of drones, maps, electric circuits, a soldering gun, black powder, and books written in Arabic, were also recovered from the duo, it said.

"During the analysis of the black powder, it came to light that it was an explosive substance," it said.

The ATS also added that they also recovered a tent, which they had procured to live in jungle areas.

Sources said that the two terror suspects were exploring possible hideouts in the jungle areas surrounding the Pune district in a bid to escape the eyes of the investigation agencies.

After taking over the investigation in the case, the ATS has slapped stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) against the suspects as the seized items suggest that the duo had received training on making bombs and posed a threat to the unity and security of the nation, they said.

The ATS also said in its statement that multiple teams were working to trace the third suspect, who managed to escape during the operation on July 18.

Video: Maharashtra Bus Seen Running With Half-Broken Rooftop, Probe Ordered

A video of a Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) bus running with a partially detached rooftop has surfaced online, prompting authorities to order a probe into the matter. According to a PTI report, the bus was plying in Gadchiroli district of the state.

The clip which has gone viral on social media shows the bus running with the outer covering of its rooftop getting detached from one side and fluttering in the air.

Voice of Mumbai posted the video on X, formerly Twitter, with a caption that read, "Shocking! Maharashtra State Road Transport Corp. (MSRTC) bus runs with a broken roof!"

Watch the video here:

When contacted, MSRTC vice chairman and managing director Shekhar Channe told PTI that the bus belongs to the Aheri depot in the Gadchiroli district. "A probe has been ordered into the incident. Action is being taken against the officer concerned," he said.

Another MSRTC official said an officer of the mechanical engineering department in Gadchiroli had been suspended for being responsible for the poor maintenance of the bus.

"The crew of the bus and passengers were unaware of the broken rooftop. After people from some other vehicle pointed it out to the bus crew members, the latter asked them to shoot a video," he said.

The video has sparked significant concerns regarding the safety of the public. One user wrote, ''First the driver and conductor for with the last depot manager should be sacked. Were they not aware of major accident to others with such condition of bus. Or if it's sudden then stop the bus and ask for new bus to take passengers.''

Another commented, ''Pathetic to see the condition of state transport... Not sure if these are audited on a regular basis... Also whom to blame, the maintenance team, transport department or the driver who accepted to run it....''

Notably, the MSRTC is one of the biggest public transport bodies in the country with more than 15,000 buses in its fleet. It ferries around 60 lakh passengers every day.

IIT-Hyderabad Student Dies By Suicide, Family Says Was Upset Over Backlogs

A 20-year-old student of IIT-Hyderabad died by suicide last week in Vishakhapatnam by drowning himself in the sea. The student, identified as Dhanavath Kartik, was allegedly struggling due to some backlogs in college because of which he took the extreme step, suspect the police.

Dhanavath Kartik, whose parents reside in Miryalguda town of Telangana, was reportedly missing from his IIT college hostel campus in Hyderabad from July 17. The hostel authorities filed a missing complaint on July 19 after his parents came looking for him after he did not answer his phone.

According to Kartik's uncle Ravindra, he would speak to his mother twice every day and had spoken to her even on the evening before the incident. However, when he did not answer his phone in the morning on July 19, his mother got worried.

The police said that Kartik made his last call to his mother from somewhere near Jodugullapalem Beach in Visakhapatnam but even then made her believe he was on the campus. According to CCTV footages, he was last seen in what was described as a danger zone near the beach in the early hours of July 19.

The police recovered a body on the beach on July 20 but suspected that it was of an old man because of the decomposition. However, after post-mortem, doctors said that the victim was a younger person.

Kartik's parents were called in and they identified the body as his.

The family says that Kartik was worried about some backlogs in college. According to Kartik's family, he stayed back at the hostel even during the holiday break in May and June, when everyone else, including his friends had left the hostel for their homes.

Kartik had come home only for a couple of weeks in May and returned for his parents marriage anniversary, and again for a couple of days the weekend before he went missing. His family did not suspect anything seriously wrong. They thought he was looking low-spirited and not in the best of health because of the pressure of the backlogs, his mother said.

Asked If He Was Faced With The Question Of Nepotism, Aditya Roy Kapur Said...

Bollywood actor Aditya Roy Kapur has been hogging all the limelight ever since his portrayal of Shaan Sengupta in the blockbuster web series The Night Manager. Now, in an interview with Filmfare, the actor has opened up about his initial days in the industry and on being faced with the question of nepotism. Talking to Filmfare, Aditya Roy Kapur said that he started in the industry by doing supporting roles hence nepotism didn't play a part in his journey as an actor.

He said, "I think people know that I have kind of made my way into the industry. I started with supporting roles in films my brothers weren't involved with. My journey has been a public one. People saw my career develop slowly. By the time I did my first leading role, I had already done three supporting parts. So I think that journey is clear for people to see."

On being asked about his auditioning experiences, Aditya Roy Kapur emphasised that rejection is a part of the auditioning process however, he noted that the process in itself was never scarring for him.

Talking to Filmfare, Aditya Roy Kapur said, "If you want to be an actor, I think rejection is part of the process. You better get used to it. The early days of auditioning were pretty much a lot of no. I used to audition for a lot of stuff but it's not like I knew for sure that I wanted to be an actor. I was an RJ and I was happy.  I was never really into films. For me, it happened by chance. I used to go to certain auditions because people used to call me now and then. And I would audition because you never know what opportunities would come. But I don't think those early years scarred me a lot."

Besides work, Aditya Roy Kapur is also trending big time with regard to his rumoured relationship with actress Ananya Panday. It so happened that, Ananya Panday watched Greta Gerwig's Barbie over the weekend and she was accompanied by the usual suspect - rumoured boyfriend Aditya Roy Kapur.

An Instagram user shared a video in which she can be seen clicking selfies with Ananya Panday and Aditya Roy Kapur from a movie hall that was screening the film. "Major fan girl moment during the Barbie movie with Ananya Panday and Aditya Roy Kapur," the fan captioned the post.

Bureaucrat's Father Arrested Over Casteist Remarks Against Haryana Officer

A bureaucrat's father was arrested today for allegedly making casteist remarks against the Deputy Commissioner of Haryana's Charkhi Dadri district, the police said.

Ashok Swami, the accused, made the remarks during a protest on Tuesday over waterlogging and poor drainage system in the Dadri market area.

Shops in the Dadri market remained shut on Tuesday, with owners later holding a meeting at the Ambedkar Chowk, during which Mr Swami allegedly made the casteist remarks against the deputy commissioner, the police said.

However, those present at the meeting objected to his comments.

Later, a video of the incident surfaced on social media.

An official of the agriculture department, posted as the Duty Magistrate during the traders' protest, complained to the police, based on which a case was filed against Mr Swami, the police said.

"Ashok Swami, the accused in the case, has been arrested. The charge is that the accused made casteist remarks against Charkhi Dadri's Deputy Commissioner," police officer Raj Kumar said.

"A case has been registered against the accused under provisions of the SC/ST Act," he said.

Mr Swami's son, an Indian Administrative Services officer, is posted in Rajasthan, Mr Kumar said. Mr Swami runs a sweets shop in Dadri.

The accused was produced before a court in Charkhi Dadri which sent him to jail for two weeks, the police said.

Gyanvapi Mosque Management Moves High Court Against Survey, Hearing Begins

The Allahabad High Court on Tuesday heard a plea against a district court order directing the Archaeological Survey of India to conduct a survey to determine if the Gyanvapi mosque in Varanasi was built upon a temple.

After hearing arguments in the matter, Chief Justice Pritinker Diwaker posted it for further hearing on Wednesday.

The high court also fixed August 28 for delivery of judgement on another petition challenging maintainability of a civil suit before a Varanasi court seeking the restoration of a temple at the site where the Gyanvapi mosque is currently situated. The judgement was reserved by Justice Prakash Padia on the petition filed by UP Sunni Central Waqf Board and others.

On Tuesday, Anjuman Intezamia Masjid, which manages the mosque, moved the high court, a day after the Supreme Court halted the ASI survey till 5 pm Wednesday, allowing time for the mosque management committee to appeal against the lower court's order.

The counsel for the committee, senior advocate SFA Naqvi, requested an early hearing of the case before Chief Justice Diwaker stating that there is an urgency as the Supreme Court's Monday order will expire on Wednesday.

On this, the Chief Justice said that if parties have no objection, then he himself can hear this matter. As the counsels for the parties agreed to the same, the court started hearing the matter.

Presenting his argument, Mr Naqvi requested the court to set aside the July 21 order of the Varanasi district court on the grounds that the district court had acted in urgency and directed the ASI to conduct the survey of the Gyanvapi mosque premises and submit its report by August 4. Thereby, not giving sufficient time to the petitioner to challenge its order before appropriate forum as per law, he said.

Mr Naqvi said that the district court on July 21 passed the impugned order of ASI survey even without impleading ASI as a party to the suit.

He further said that the survey order was passed at a very preliminary stage as the parties were not asked to produce their evidence.

Mr Naqvi also argued that during the survey if any excavation is done, it will harm/damage the property in dispute (mosque).

Vishnu Shankar Jain, the counsel for the respondent (Hindu side), submitted that in the Ram Mandir case, a survey was conducted by the ASI and the same was accepted by the high court as well as the Supreme Court. Thus the order passed by the court below was just and proper, he said.

The mosque is located next to the Kashi Vishwanath temple in Varanasi and the Hindu litigants in the district court had sought the survey to determine whether a temple existed at the same spot earlier.

The Varanasi district court on Friday ordered the ASI to conduct a survey using technologies like ground penetrating radar and excavations, if necessary.

The Supreme Court's Monday order to pause the survey came while the ASI team was inside the mosque complex.

Opinion: Opinion: Uttam Kumar, The True Star

Uttam Kumar blazed like a meteor and vanished like one.

Bengal's classiest filmstar was shrouded in mysteries. I never met him but heard countless stories about the person and his acting prowess. And his temperament.

A new book has hit the stands. It is on bars and the Kolkata Maidan, the huge green cover that is home to some iconic football clubs, the Eden Gardens cricket stadium, and the majestic Victoria Memorial.

It talks about various places in Maidan where top writers, filmmakers, and thinkers would go to drink, some even carrying small bottles of whisky in their pockets. The author, Rahul Purakayastha, refers to Bimal Deb's poem, Uttamkumarer morning walk which translates into Uttam Kumar's morning walk, and writes that the actor saw Calcutta policemen shooting three people at point-blank range in the maidan. Those killed - it was nothing but an act that later came to be known as encounter killing - were Naxalites. Among those shot dead was seasoned Naxalite leader Saroj Dutta.

Uttam Kumar, probably threatened by the Calcutta Police brass, quietly left Calcutta and shifted to Mumbai. Apparently, Uttam had narrated the incident to some of his confidants who, in turn, alerted the cops. Once the dust settled down, he returned to Calcutta and started shooting for a host of films he had signed.

Yet, you will not find a single person in Kolkata who will say the star was a coward and did not raise the issue of the early morning killings in Maidan with the state government.

Uttam Kumar was the darling of the masses in Bengal, who had christened him Mahanayak - superstar. No male actor in Bengal could reach the status Uttam Kumar had reached in a span of three decades. He acted in over 200 films.

He was a man of varying moods. He once got up from the dining table and started walking in the main road because his second wife, Supriya Chowdhury, did not prepare a particular dish the star had requested. Crowds started gathering in hundreds, then thousands, seeing their top star walking in the streets all by himself. A distraught Supriya started following her husband, she forgot to wear her shoes. Soon, the tar-laced hot streets of Calcutta were making things difficult for her. Supriya, reportedly, was weeping profusely and asking her husband to pardon her for the lapse.

Eventually, cops from the Park Street police station rushed to the scene and senior officers told Uttam Kumar that he needs to get into the police jeep, or else there could be a major stampede. It is rumoured that Uttam Kumar did not speak to his wife for over a week after this incident.

There are countless stories revolving around this handsome star. I heard from some senior actors in Kolkata how Uttam Kumar would not get a bypass surgery done to control his heart ailments. He told his friends how can a doctor cut up the chest of a star, and take a look at his heart. Won't the star look horrible after the operation, asked Uttam Kumar. The doctors felt silent.

I have been researching for a book on Uttam Kumar and have been told some interesting stories about the actor. One revolved around his failed attempt to make a mark in Bollywood with Choti Si Mulaqat featuring Vaijayantimala Bali. The movie was released in a few theatres in Bombay and elsewhere in India. There were rumours that the all-powerful Kapoor family messed up the show, ostensibly because Uttam Kumar had refused a role Raj Kapoor had offered him in Sangam. The role, eventually, went to Rajendra Kumar but Raj Kapoor remembered the rejection. This was the second rejection, Uttam Kumar had rejected an earlier offer to act in the lead role of Jagte Raho. Uttam Kumar could never make any mark in Bombay (now Mumbai).

Now it's strange how Uttam Kumar failed in Mumbai where stars like Shashi Kapoor, Dharmendra and Amitabh Bachchan were big fans of Uttam Kumar's style of acting. I read somewhere Uttam Kumar was also included in the cast of Ajnabi which was directed by Shakti Samanta. But when the movie eventually hit the theatres, Uttam Kumar was not among the stars.

The Bombay misadventure messed up Uttam Kumar. The actor faced huge financial losses and had to sell off some of his properties to clear the dues. And it was then he suffered his first heart attack. What was worse, those who messed up his life in Bombay were none other than his Bengali friends from Calcutta. A month after, Uttam Kumar, during a shoot, told his cameramen friends to shoot him behind a large, artificial spider web. After the shoot was over and the prints hit the newspapers, Uttam Kumar told Supriya that this was his life's story. "Everyone wants to put a web around me," he told Supriya. He was also upset because Soumitra Chatterjee, his junior and a rival, often told people that the top Bengali actress should have been paired with him and not with Uttam Kumar. But directors thought otherwise.

I had met with Supriya a year before she died. She sat down and narrated some wonderful stories about her life and times with the legendary superstar. Those were the black-and-white trailblazer days of Bengali cinema, there was no WhatsApp, no Insta, yet his movies did brilliantly well.

Supriya laughed when she said how difficult it was for her to keep Uttam Kumar away from women who would crowd his shooting studios. "What was funny was that everyone wanted to marry him almost instantly."

Supriya was under severe medication while she spoke to us. Every five minutes she would take a break, drink some water, and say she normally doesn't give interviews without cash. She was doing it only because it was all about Uttam Kumar. I didn't know how much I should have paid her. I realised I had not carried the customary sweets during my visit.

But the veteran actress poured her heart out. She narrated some 25 small stories that I plan to carry in my book before each chapter. One revolved around Uttam Kumar's worshipping of Lakshmi, the Indian goddess of wealth, with loads of fanfare at his home. He - claimed Supriya - had a vision of the goddess on his terrace. And then, the superstar was encouraged to see a white owl that visited his home every evening for a week before the puja. The white owl is considered auspicious in India because it is the carrier of the goddess.

Another, interestingly, was how Uttam Kumar never wanted her to wear a nightgown in bed. He insisted she wear a saree, not necessarily a new one, before hitting the bed. I thought it a little bizarre; how can you handle a saree in bed? But then, that's what stars are made of. Their style, whims, and fancies are totally different from the rest.

Uttam Kumar, said Supriya, was indeed handsome. His title role in Satyajit Ray'sNayak, which translates to The Star, was one of his finest. I was told Elizabeth Taylor was impressed seeing him on screen and wanted to meet him. It never happened. Worse, in Calcutta, Soumitra Chatterjee - a favourite of Ray - asked his friends how Ray could pick Uttam Kumar and not him for the movie. He probably did not have the courage to ask Ray.

The legendary director has himself recounted the premiere of Nayak and how Uttam looked super smart in a new suit and Supriya looked ravishing in a beautiful saree. Expectedly, the crowds went berserk after the movie, and Ray lost control. The fans tore off a portion of the star's suit and the cops had to rescue him and take him to Oberoi Grand. Ray said in one of his interviews that he finally realised why Uttam was considered the biggest star of Bengal, the first one to get a national award after it was instituted.

It is a pity he died so young; he was in his early fifties. Liquor and an erratic lifestyle had messed up his life, he was no longer handsome. Uttam Kumar realised his time was almost up, he suffered a severe heart attack on the sets of Ogo Bodhu Sundori.

Two incidents that happened just before he died will stay with me forever. One, his favourite makeup room was offered to a top Bollywood star, and Uttam Kumar was made to wait. He didn't like it at all and said if there is a door to enter life, there is a door to exit. And that he knew the exit. The second one revolved around Punu Sen, who worked very closely with Ray. Uttam Kumar had asked Sen if Ray had some roles for him and that he didn't like the roles offered to him.

Two days after his conversation with Sen, Uttam Kumar breathed his last amidst some serious rumours that a lifesaving drug was not offered to him when he was hovering between life and death.

Why? No one has the answer.

Only Supriya told me before winding up the interview: "Remember one thing, someone who is stretched between multiple women can never live a peaceful life. He will always be tormented."

Supriya should know, she was a big slice in the life and times of Bengal's biggest movie star.

Shantanu Guha Ray's book, Uttam Kumar: The Star, will hit the stands in March 2024. It will have 25 exclusive stories about the star, narrated by Supriya Chowdhury.

Deadly Mix Of Fake News, Rumours Fuelled Manipur Clashes: Officials

The ethnic violence in Manipur that erupted on May 3 and has left over 160 dead has been largely fuelled by rumours and fake news, according to officials from various security agencies who have been monitoring the situation in the restive northeastern state.

The despicable May 4 incident in Kangpokpi district, where two women were paraded naked and assaulted by several people, was among the spate of sexual attacks that occurred after a picture of a body wrapped in polythene was circulated in the Imphal valley with a false claim that the victim had been murdered by tribals in Churachandpur.

The picture was later found to be that of a woman murdered in the national capital but the fire had engulfed the valley by that time, and what was witnessed the next day put humanity to shame, says an official while referring to the video of the Kangpokpi incident that appeared on social media last week and has sparked massive outrage in the country.

On the same day, barely 30 km away, two more women in their 20s were brutally raped and murdered.

The lawlessness because of the fake picture spread like jungle fire and was one of the reasons for the state government to shut down the Internet on May 3, the officials said.

A section of parties and activists have opposed the suspension of the Internet. Refusing to interfere, the Supreme Court on July 17 asked the Manipur government to raise its grievance before the high court against the HC's earlier order on a limited restoration of the Internet in the state.

Analysis by various security agencies engaged in dousing the fire in Manipur, which has been on the boil since May 3, has led to the conclusion that there is "no control on fake or one-sided news being circulated even by local newspapers".

Citing a recent example, they said one of the prominent dailies had claimed that tribal men, armed with weapons, had planned to attack the members of the majority community at Kwatha village of Chandel district.

Alarmed by the news report, Manipur police swung into action, only to find that the news report was false.

The police issued a statement saying that there was no attempt to burn any village as reported in some local dailies and again appealed that only verified information in sensitive cases should be published.

Police have dedicated 'Rumour Free Number' 9233522822 for verifying any information emerging either through social media or word of mouth and checking the spread of disinformation.

Another video showing tribal youths marching in Churachandpur a few days back was circulated in the valley with subtitles claiming that the tribals will snatch women and children from the majority community.

However, since the video was in Mizo language, which is the most widely spoken of the Kuki-Chin areas, some anti-social elements took advantage and put subtitles to raise tempers in the Imphal valley, where Manipuri Meiteilon is generally spoken.

What was actually spoken in the video was a demand for a separate administration which ended with a tribal hymn, the officials said.

Another fake news being peddled and circulated in the Imphal valley was that some tribals had torched a religious place - Kongba Maru Laiphamlen.

Security agencies took some of the members of the majority community and showed them that no damage had been done to the religious place. However, armed clashes were reported between the ethnic groups in which two tribals were injured. Things subsided after the news was denied.

Another video was circulated which showed some dead people lying on the ground and termed as members of the majority community mowed down by the tribals. This video was also circulated after the shocking 26-second clip of the assault on two tribal women appeared on social media.

The fact, officials said, was that the dead were members of the majority community who had attempted to burn a tribal village in the hills and were killed in retaliatory action.

In the early phase of violence, a video showing a young woman being brutally assaulted and finally shot to death was circulated with a claim that she was a tribal woman who was tortured by the majority community.

It was immediately clarified that the video was that of a woman killed in Tamu town of Myanmar last year and had no links with the ethnic clashes in Manipur.

Earlier this month, a vehicle, which was a part of Manipur Police's Inspector General (CID), was set afire after a fake rumour that some tribals were being escorted out of the Imphal valley. However, police took strong action and arrested people in this connection, The majority community held a protest in the national capital where they had shown a woman from their community being targeted by the tribals. However, the picture was that of an Arunachal Pradesh woman who had been abused domestically, the officials said.

Officials feel that with the rumour mills working overtime, it will take a long time before the Internet could be fully restored in the state.

"The semblance of sanity has to arrive first. As of now, we are very far from that," a senior official said.

Delhi On Alert As Haryana Releases Barrage Water Into Yamuna: Minister

The Delhi government is on high alert due to the discharge of over two lakh cusecs of water from the Hathnikund Barrage in Haryana into the Yamuna, Revenue Minister Atishi said.

Some parts of Yamuna Khadar (floodplains) might get inundated if the river's water level crosses 206.7 metres. However, the government is prepared for evacuations, the minister said.

According to the Central Water Commission (CWC) data, the flow rate at the Yamunanagar-located Hathnikund Barrage crossed the 1 lakh mark at 9 am and oscillated between 2 lakh and 2.5 lakh cusecs between 10 am and 4 pm.

The India Meteorological Department has predicted heavy to very heavy rain in parts of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand till July 25.

Atishi said a regular 'munadi' (announcement) is being done in vulnerable areas to inform residents about the threat of flooding. Relief camps have been inspected and preparations made for people to stay there.

The Delhi government is on high alert due to the discharge of more than 2 lakh cusecs of water from the Hathnikund Barrage into the Yamuna River, the minister said.

"The situation has sparked concern, prompting the government to take proactive measures to ensure the safety and well-being of the residents," she added.

Atishi said Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has been closely monitoring the developments and overseeing the response efforts.

The Department of Revenue has undertaken extensive measures to tackle the situation effectively, she said.

"Whether it's the central district, eastern district, or areas like the Yamuna Bazar and Yamuna Khadar, we have made sufficient preparations to address any challenges that may arise," she said.

The Delhi government appeals to the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with the authorities during this critical time. Updates and advisories will be regularly provided to keep the residents informed about the evolving situation, the minister said.

Parts of Delhi have been grappling with waterlogging and flooding for more than a week now. Initially, a downpour caused intense waterlogging on July 8 and 9, with the city receiving 125 per cent of its monthly rainfall quota in just two days.

Subsequently, heavy rains in the upper catchment areas of the Yamuna, including in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Haryana, led to the river swelling to a record 208.66 metres on July 13.

One More Detained Over Horrific Manipur Video: Cops

Manipur Police has arrested a sixth person in connection with the May 4 parading of two women naked in Kangpokpi district of the state, officials said on Saturday.

Police said the arrested person is a juvenile.

Police had made the first arrest on Thursday, a day after a 26-second video of the horrific incident surfaced on July 19. Three more arrests were made later that day.

The fifth accused, 19-year-old youth, was arrested on Saturday.

One of the women seen in the video is the wife of an ex-army man, who served as a subedar in the Assam Regiment and had even fought in the Kargil War.

More than 160 people have lost their lives, and several have been injured since ethnic violence broke out in the state on May 3, when a 'Tribal Solidarity March' was organised in the hill districts to protest against the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.

Meiteis account for about 53 per cent of Manipur's population and live mostly in the Imphal Valley, while tribals, which include Nagas and Kukis, constitute 40 per cent and reside mostly in the hill districts.

"Historic Decision": Top Education Official On CBSE's Indian Languages Move

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has asked its schools to consider using Indian languages as optional medium of instruction to make multilingual education a reality.

Schools affiliated to the CBSE has now an option of teaching in regional languages from pre-primary to Class 12. Till now, CBSE schools could teach only either in English or Hindi, unlike state board schools that can teach in English, Hindi or a state language.

The CBSE's announcement is in line with the government's push for the National Education Policy (NEP).

The University Grants Commission (UGC) had recently come up with a similar circular for higher education.

"This is a historic decision and will open a world of opportunities for many children, besides Indianising teaching and learning systems in the country," Chamu Krishna Shastry, head of the high-powered Bharatiya Bhasha Samiti for the promotion of Indian languages under the Education Ministry, told NDTV today.

"With the UGC too making professional education available in regional languages and now CBSE doing the same for school education, this is a historic move for progress in implementing the NEP," Mr Shastry said.

The NEP aims to address the growing developmental needs of India, and proposes the revision and revamping of all aspects of education, including its regulation and governance, to create a new system that is aligned with the aspirational goals of the country.

Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan in a tweet congratulated CBSE. "This is a laudatory step towards encouraging education in mother tongue and Indian languages in schools," he said.

In the circular, the CBSE noted the challenges posed by the implementation of multilingual education and use of mother tongue as a medium of instruction, which include availability of skilled teachers capable of teaching multilingual subjects, the creation of high-quality multilingual textbooks and time limitation, especially in two-shift government schools.

US Judge Appointed By Trump To Preside Over His Secret Documents Case

When Aileen Mercedes Cannon was appointed a judge by Donald Trump three years ago, she could hardly have imagined she would preside over his trial.

But on Friday she set May 20, 2024 as the date to start the unprecedented federal criminal prosecution of a former president in her small Fort Pierce, Florida courtroom.

Her assignment to the high-stakes trial has added another layer of controversy to the case, in which Trump is charged with 37 counts of willfully keeping highly classified US documents in his Mar-a-Lago, Florida home, obstruction of justice and lying to federal law enforcement officials.

Some of the charges bring up to 20 years in prison, with Cannon to decide the sentencing if a jury finds Trump guilty.

The pressure is even higher because the trial will start in the middle of an already intense battle before the November 2024 presidential election, with Trump leading the race for the Republican nomination.

It remains to be seen how Cannon will accommodate the courtroom requirements and election campaign needs of the man who gave her the job.

- Lifetime appointment -

Cannon was relatively young -- 38 years old -- when Trump nominated her to the lifetime position in 2020.

Born in Cali, Colombia, she grew up in Florida. Her mother immigrated to the United States from Cuba as a child.

Cannon obtained her undergraduate degree at Duke University and her law degree from the University of Michigan, routinely ranked among the top 10 law schools in the country.

A member of the Federalist Society, which brings together conservative attorneys, judges and law experts, Cannon worked for three years at a private law firm in Washington and for seven years as an assistant US attorney prior to becoming a judge.

- Random pick -

Her selection to handle the Trump case was random, blindly drawn from the pool of several active federal judges in the Justice Department's southern Florida district.

Some legal experts have argued she should have recused herself because she allegedly displayed bias towards Trump last year when she was assign a lawsuit he filed over the FBI raid to recover the Mar-a-Lago documents.

She has broad powers to determine the pace of the trial, and her May 20 start date comes smack in the middle of the presidential campaign.

If the trial is ongoing and Trump wins the November 2024 election, he could conceivably take action to intervene or even pardon himself upon taking office.

Daniel Richman, a law professor at Columbia University, said the presiding judge wields enormous power over a trial and plays a critical role in how it unfolds.

"Even in a run of the mill case, the judge can have a significant and sometimes even dispositive effect on proceedings," Richman said.

Others contend that Cannon will ensure that he gets a fair shake.

"It's impossible now for Trump to complain that he's got a judge that is biased against him," said Edward Foley, a constitutional law professor at Ohio State University.

Thomas Holbrook, a professor of political science at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, said Cannon is in a "tough position."

"Almost no matter what she does, she's going to either feed into existing concerns about her potential bias or disappoint Trump supporters," Holbrook said.

Setback For Sharad Pawar, All 7 NCP MLAs In Nagaland To Support Ajit Pawar

All seven MLAs of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in Nagaland have expressed support to Ajit Pawar in a huge setback for his uncle Sharad Pawar.

The seven NCP MLAs of the northeast state in a statement today said all party workers in the Nagaland NCP office will also support Ajit Pawar.

Earlier this month, Ajit Pawar and eight other NCP MLAs joined the Maharashtra Shiv Sena and BJP alliance government, led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. That move split the NCP, the party founded by Sharad Pawar.

Ajit Pawar's tactical manoeuvre has parallels to how Mr Shinde broke away from the Shiv Sena when Uddhav Thackeray was the Chief Minister. Mr Shinde eventually gained control of the Shiv Sena.

In 2019, the Shiv Sena had ended the alliance with the BJP and formed the Maha Vikas Aghadi government in Maharashtra with the Congress and NCP.

The government collapsed last year after Mr Shinde split the party and joined hands with the BJP to form a new government.

Asserting his leadership of the "real NCP," Ajit Pawar has drawn the support of senior party leaders like Praful Patel, Chhagan Bhujbal, and Dilip Walse Patil.

However, Sharad Pawar has also asserted his claim as the leader of the "real NCP," expelling several senior leaders for "anti-party activities."

Indian-Origin 7-Year-Old Schoolgirl Wins UK PM's Points Of Light Award

An seven-year-old Indian-origin schoolgirl, who started volunteering for a United Nations' sustainability initiative against microplastic pollution when she was just three, has been awarded the British Prime Minister's Points of Light award.

Moksha Roy, who received the award from Deputy British Prime Minister Oliver Dowden last week, has the distinction of being the world's youngest sustainability advocate.

Moksha has been recognised for volunteering for several sustainability campaigns, including raising funds to help children in need.

"Moksha has set an excellent example in her work championing UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). She has gone to significant lengths to have these included in the school curriculum and has been in communication with leaders all over the world to encourage them to consider this," said Dowden.

"Her school no longer uses plastic glitter, confetti or plastic art supplies - this is a testament to her strong beliefs and ability to change those around her to create a better world," he said.

Moksha has also assisted in educational sessions for deprived schoolchildren in India.

"I am very happy to receive the Points of Light award. I hope both children and adults get to understand that caring for the planet and its people and making small changes to everyday life should not be just for a few. It is just like brushing our teeth," said Moksha.

"We brush our teeth to care for them and avoid pain; similarly we can take care of the planet not for anyone else, but just us, to be safe. Each and every one of us can do small things in our own lives, work and community to combat the big challenges such as climate change, pollution, poverty and inequality," she said.

Her parents, Ragini G Roy and Sourav Roy, said their daughter's efforts prove that even the youngest in society have a role to play in combatting climate change.

According to Downing Street, the Points of Light awards recognise outstanding people whose service is making a difference in their communities and whose story can inspire others towards innovative solutions to social challenges in their own communities and beyond.

Massive Solar Flare Erupts, Potentially Triggering a Solar Storm

Due to the Sun's occasional severe solar storms, which have the potential to disrupt all communication on Earth, there has been a resurgence of interest in its solar cycles. Today's solar flare pounded our world, crashing into the magnetic field of the earth.

According to Spaceweather.com, the big sunspot AR3363 just produced a significant solar flare, a long-duration M6-class event, during the early hours of July 18th. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded the blast near the sun's southwestern limb.

Energetic protons accelerated by the flare have reached Earth and are now peppering the top of our planet's atmosphere. This is called a "radiation storm." According to data from NOAA's GOES-16 satellite, it is a category S2 event.

The website, which tracks solar activity, reported that, although the explosion was not X-class, it was more powerful than many X-flares would be. Why? Because it lasted so long. The flare's X-ray output was above M5 for more than an hour and above M1 for nearly 4 hours. It had plenty of time to lift a substantial CME out of the sun's atmosphere.

Although the CME is not heading directly for Earth, it appears to have an Earth-directed component. A NASA model suggests it could deliver an effective glancing blow as early as July 20th. NOAA is doing its own modelling, and results should be available soon.

Rani Mukerji On Working With New Filmmakers: "They Are Hungrier To Disrupt"

Actor Rani Mukerji loves working with new talent. Her latest hit film Mrs. Chatterjee vs Norway was directed by a newcomer director Ashima Chibber.

As per Rani, newcomers especially the directors are always hungry to disrupt because they want to make the most significant mark on the industry with their first few films.

"I have always been excited by new directors because I have believed that they are always hungrier to disrupt and I love disruption. It is definitely the reason why I have worked with so many new or first time directors and I consider myself to be fortunate to have found them and exchanged creative energies with them," Rani said.

She also recalled working with Karan Johar in his first directorial Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.

"My collaboration with first-time directors started since the beginning of my career with Karan Johar on Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (KKHH) who gave the youth of the country relevancy at that time. It was amazing to creatively collaborate with him because he had such an amazing story to tell and how masterfully he made KKHH," she reminisced.

“I have worked with Shaad Ali on his first film Saathiya and he too gave me a gem of a film that I'm proud of in my filmography! Gopi Puthran is another outstanding director who directed the second instalment of Mardaani! He has created a fiercely independent and courageous woman on screen and I respect him for doing so because cinema can do a lot to represent women well," Rani further said.

More Optimistic About India Than I've Been In Long Time: World Bank Chief

World Bank president Ajay Banga on Monday said amid global challenges, he is more optimistic about India and its economy now than he has been "in a long time".

Talking to the media on the sidelines of the third G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors meeting here, the first-ever Indian-American to head the top global financial institution said the world economy is in a difficult place.

Banga (63) showered praises on India for its digital infrastructure, saying he is a "big fan" of such initiatives taken by the world's fifth-largest economy.

"I am more optimistic about India, as a whole, economically, than I have been for a long time. The fact is that the world economy is in a difficult place. It has outperformed what everybody thought. But it does not mean that it won't be more challenging. The IMF forecast and the World Bank forecast is that the world will get a little challenging over the next year or so," he said at the Mahatma Mandir Convention Centre, where the G20 meeting is being held.

As per government data released in May 2023, India's GDP growth beat all expectations with a 6.1 per cent expansion in the March quarter of the last fiscal that helped push the annual growth rate (in FY23) to 7.2 per cent.

"I said in the speech this morning (at G20 meet) that the forecast is not equal to destiny, we can change destiny. And that's what you should think about,'' said Mr Banga when asked about his views on the Indian economy.

Praising India for the steps taken in recent times to build digital infrastructure, he said applications which were built around that framework are making people's lives easier today.

Mr Banga, who took over as president of the Washington-headquartered development lender in early June, noted that digitisation has allowed citizens to easily access multiple services online.

"You can't just do digitisation of lending without digitising the infrastructure. What India has done over the last 15-20 years, it is digitising the infrastructure. That is enabling all the terrific applications to be built, which make it easier for people to access services online. So, I am a big fan of that," he said.

James Cameron Breaks Silence On OceanGate Film Rumours. He Says...

Filmmaker and Titanic expert James Cameron quashed rumours about his involvement in the development of an OceanGate film.

Filmmaker James Cameron spoke about rumours of him working on an OceanGate film. Mr Cameron said that although he usually refrains from responding to "offensive rumours", in this case he will break his silence. The director, on Instagram, said that he is not a part of any film on the topic.

"I don't respond to offensive rumours in the media usually, but I need to now," Mr Cameron said. "I'm not in talks about an OceanGate film, now will I ever be," the filmmaker added.

The OceanGate sub imploded during a dive to the Titanic wreck, killing all five people aboard. The Titan sub was reported missing on June 18. The US Coast Guard said on June 22 that the vessel had suffered a catastrophic implosion, ending a desperate rescue operation that had captivated the world. James Cameron earlier spoke about the tragedy extensively.

Explorers, including James Cameron, had sounded the alarm earlier with the filmmaker saying he had found the hull design risky.

"I thought it was a horrible idea. I wish I'd spoken up, but I assumed somebody was smarter than me, you know, because I never experimented with that technology, but it just sounded bad on its face," Mr Cameron told news agency Reuters.

The 'Titanic' director also said he is shocked by how similar the two instances -- the Titanic sinking and the Titan imploding --are.

Mr Cameron added that in both cases, "warnings went unheeded" and that both tragedies took place "at the same exact site".

US Woman Dies After Being Run Over By Lawn Mower At Park

A woman was found dead in a California park after she was run over by a lawnmower. According to a report by ABC 10, the accident happened around noon on July 8 while a Grover Landscape Services employee was cutting the grass. The man was using a John Deere tractor with a pull-behind mower.

Sharon Bear, spokesperson for Modesto Police Department said that the employee saw a body in an area he had already passed through and called 911. The unidentified employee said that he did not see the sleeping woman.

The woman was identified as Christine Chavez, 27. She was pronounced dead at the scene and released to the coroner.

According to a report by Fox 40, the family members of the victims said that their grief has been compounded by what they called a disrespectful, botched clean-up.

"They left big chunks of her all over the place, just covered up with the grass," the victim's sister Rosalinda told the media outlet.

"We have to go see the place because we wanted some kind of closure, and to be right there, looking at the ground, and then all of a sudden, seeing chunks of her, is horrible."

"Even when they go and pick up a dog from the street they take more time."

Chavez's father, Christopher told the media outlet that he was able to pocket pieces of his daughter's bones, skull and teeth in the days after her death.

However, the woman's family believes the careless handling of her remains might be because the victim was homeless.

Himachal Suffered Nearly Rs 8,000 Crore Losses Due To Rain: Chief Minister

Himachal Pradesh has suffered losses of about Rs 8,000 crore as heavy rains caused damage in the hill state, triggering landslides and flash floods and damaging roads and other infrastructure, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said on Saturday.

According to the state emergency response centre, the losses amounted to about Rs 4,000 crore till Friday night and Chief Minister Sukhu had sought an interim relief of Rs 2,000 crore from the Union home ministry.

About 70,000 tourists have been evacuated from the state and 15,000 vehicles sent out, while around 500 tourists have voluntarily decided to stay back, Sukhu said in a statement issued here.

Some tourists stuck at Kasol, Manikaran and other adjoining areas in Kullu district refused to move out without their vehicles and have decided to stay back for a few more days till the situation normalises and all roads are opened.

Due to a heavy landslide near Dunkhara on the Kasol-Bhuntar road, the vehicles could not be moved and the tourists had to trek to reach the other side. However the state government said these tourists are being taken care of.

Electricity, water and mobile phone services have been temporarily restored in 80 per cent of the disaster-affected areas and efforts are being made to restore essential services in the remaining areas at the earliest, the statement said.

The bus service of the Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) is suspended on 899 routes and 256 buses are held en route. The HRTC has suffered losses of Rs 5.56 crore, officials said.

Meanwhile, the local MeT office has issued an "orange" warning for heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places in 10 of the 12 districts of the state, barring Lahaul and Spiti and Kinnaur, from July 15 to 17 and warned of the possibility of landslides, flash floods, mudslides and increased runoff in rivers and nullahs.

It has also issued a "yellow" warning for heavy rain on July 18 and forecast a wet spell in the state till July 21.

The state has received 284.1 mm rain so far in July, against the normal rainfall of 110.4 mm, an excess of 157 per cent.

Light to heavy rain continued to lash parts of the state, with Dharamshala receiving 131 mm rain, followed by Palampur (51 mm), Sundernagar and Nahan (45 mm each), Kangra (27 mm), Mandi and Narkanda (16 mm each).

US Man, Who Sought Explicit Photos From Filipino Girls, Jailed For 30 Years

A Chicago man has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for soliciting sexually explicit photos and videos from young girls in the Philippines.

Karl Quilter, 58, pleaded guilty last year to sexual exploitation of children, the US Attorney's Office for the North District of Illinois said.

Quilter was sentenced to 30 years in a federal prison by US District Judge Virginia Kendall, the US Attorney's Office said in a statement on Friday.

Quilter enticed at least nine girls in the Philippines to produce sexually explicit photos and videos and send them to him via Facebook, Viber, and Skype between 2017 and 2020, it said.

Quilter "preyed on the victims' financial difficulties, using money transfers to the victims' families to entice the girls to record the sexually explicit images," the US Attorney's Office said.

"Victim by victim, and message by message, defendant used social media and the internet to target and groom young Filipino girls," Assistant US attorney Ashley Chung said in the government's sentencing memorandum.

Security Challenges Evolved From "Dynamite To Metaverse", "Hawala To Crypto": Amit Shah

Warning the global community about security challenges which have evolved from "dynamite to metaverse" and "hawala to crypto currency", Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday urged G20 countries to rise above conventional boundaries to act against such crimes.

Speaking at the 'G20 Conference on Crime and Security in the Age of NFTs, AI & Metaverse', he underlined the threats emanating from cyber criminals using darknet, metaverse, deepfakes, ransomware and toolkit-based misinformation campaigns and strategic targeting of critical information and financial systems.

"The G20 has so far focused on digital transformation and data flow from an economic perspective, but now it is important to understand the aspects of crime and security, and find a solution," he said.

Amit Shah said such activities are a national concern as they directly impact national security, law and order, and the economy. If such crimes and criminals have to be stopped, we have to think and act by rising above the conventional geographic boundaries, he noted.

The Home Minister suggested a slew of measures to act against cyber criminals operating across borders like bringing uniformity in laws of all countries, developing a response mechanism under different laws of the countries, harmonising bench marks, best practices and regulations, and greater coordination among cyber agencies of all countries.

"An integrated and stable approach to cyber security policies will facilitate interoperability, increase trust in information sharing, and reduce the agency protocol and resources gaps. The need of the hour is to share 'real-time cyber threat intelligence' among member countries with active support from industry and academia to secure the nation's critical infrastructure," he said.

Amit Shah said our internet vision should neither be one of excessive freedom threatening the very existence of our nations nor one of the isolationist structures such as digital firewalls.

"Although technology is a positive development in bringing human beings, communities, and countries closer, there are also some anti-social elements and global forces that are using technology to cause economic and social harm to citizens and governments," he added.

Newborn Dies After Delivery In UP's Government Hospital Toilet, Probe Ordered

A panel of doctors here is examining an allegation that a newborn died Wednesday after being delivered in a toilet at a government hospital when the staff refused to admit her.

The family claimed that the newborn fell into the toilet during delivery, and could not be pulled out in time.

The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Ashwini Kumar, however, claimed that the birth - or stillbirth - happened in the toilet but denied allegations that the hospital refused to attend to the woman in labour.

Gothani village resident Jagnayak Singh said he brought his wife Rashmi Singh to the Government Mother and Child Hospital around 5 am on Wednesday after she had labour pain.

"We pleaded to the staff at the hospital to admit my wife but they refused to do anything and asked us to wait till the doctors arrived," Singh told PTI.

"My wife went to the bathroom at the reception in pain, where she delivered the child. The child fell into the toilet and died," Singh added.

According to the local people, the hospital staff along with the family members tried to rescue the newborn. But by the time the child was pulled out, it was already too late. The mother was then admitted to the labour room and her condition is said to be critical.

Denying allegations against the hospital, the CMO said, "The woman was seen by a lady doctor who told her that there was no heartbeat of the foetus. The woman was asked to wait for an ultrasound to clear the situation." The officer, however, confirmed that the woman gave birth inside the bathroom. He also added that a probe has been ordered to look into the allegations.

"A panel of three doctors has been formed to probe the matter. Strict action will be taken against those found guilty in the incident," the CMO said.
